SALEM. MONDAY. AUG. 13. 18CC. "liirmDiBro?"lHB 8TAIKSMAN. Thil lime will oloie my oonnoo'.ion with the Oregon Statetman. In doling my relation to tte readori of the Slateman, I muit bo per mitted to thank them for the tunny oppression, of approbation and enoonrgcnieiit which llicy biro freqoontly bestowed. To the member or the Prow throughout the Slate I return my grateful acknowledgment, for their considera tion and courtciy, even beyond my deserts s bnt to no one am I io much indebted ai to Mr. D. W. Craig, who has labored for so many yoara, not only on the Statetman, bnt for our noble cauie generally. With thia parting laltiUtion, allow nie to exhort the Union readori of the Slateman to . iteadraitly maintain and mpport the Union party. Permit not'hiiif to icduoo you from a hearty wpport of that party and thoie prinoi pU i which have prenervod the honor and integ rity of the nation, and enforced liberty and low throughout all iti borderi. It should be homo in mind that, if we divide into "Johnson men" or "Kadioali," Into ''Douglru Dcniodrati" or "Republican!," we but abandon tho field of politic! to the control of unmitigated Copper head!. But If we adhere to a itrict perform ance of what it right, there oan be no excuse for division, and viotory will remain with Of. Let Of itand, not for men, but for principles for equality, Justice and the right. Let ui innin tain the Union parly with undivided counsels, thM)liampion and defender of liberty- It if thelniplratlon of every patriotic hope, tlio guar antee of every rain rights, the comervator of in-partial justice, and the ibeet-anohor of tlio fnture peace and perpetuity of the nation. J. Gaston. THE SKW ORLEANS TBAGEOL The late murderoui riot In New Orleans v. ill arooie the American people to a new sciiso of the dangernui elenienti now elumbering like a volcano In the South. We recollect but li w parallels 'to thif wholecalo murder In the history of the world, and certainly none in the hiitory of. any enlightened nation, which have surpass, ed it in point of cruel and brutal feroci'y. In all aget and in all countriet civil wars have been marked by tnch cruel massacres, and it it the disgrace of the Southern armies that a Fort Pillow mnssacre of diearmed loldien and defenseless prisoners must be recorded on tho , page of American biitoryi but, lave in the re ligiout periecutiont of the middle agei and a few black ipota in the hiitory of England and Ireland, no country, in time of peace, hat been diigraced with inch an appalling outrage o this one enactod in the city of New Orleana. It if a disgrace to American civilization, if the element! wbioh have produced it can bo called . American. Not lest than one hundred and fifty pertoni have been thot down in cold blood, or Inhumanly beaten to death by the infuriated " chivalry .' Of these murdered men, some fortyare'white men ot thu higheit respecta bility. Look at Governor Hnhn. Ho was the leader of the Donglaa party in Looi iana in 1800, and always maintained hii alle giance to hit country. Of him we might sny, ai Milton said of the seraph i " Fultliful found, AmonK the faithless, fultliful only hej Anwnjr Innumerable fob, unmoved', ' Utishuken, nnseduced, nntertillrd, His loyalty lie kept, Ills love, Ilia seal. " Bush km lile ,Milutn JouW.u tu Ulu cao.su of bis oountry, that, when President Lincoln invited the loyal men of Louisiana to re-establish a State Government, In 18C4, Mr. Hahn was almost onanlmoosly chosen Governor. Ho was not a negro suffrage man, nnrobnoiiuus in any respect, save ai a devoted and fenrlvsa friend of the Union. And yet this man, al though attending the place of the Convention at a mere spectator, is set upon by the mob and the traitor polic, and made the target of every rebel revolver and bowie-knife! Such scene of violence, bloodshed and murder would be inipouiblo In any Northern city. There is no possible combination of provoca tions which nould have produord it in Chiongu or New York. We mast find the cause uf this musiaore iu the old uuu of all our nutiuiiul troubles, the evil genius uf llNinan Sluvt-ry. The history of slavery line ever been repro duced iu such hellish crimes as this. It is this all-pervading canker which silently but steadily destroyed all love of country, all national Imniir, and every veslige of respect for the menmry and deeds of 1770, iu thu slave Suites ; nml then, when ho longer ablu to rule the nation, traitorously resolved to ruin it, and wipe" it from the map of Christendom. So it has been In every nation whiub hue in I lie least ever given either its substanoe or spirit a lodgment. It was the infernal prnmpth gs of slavery w hich filled the Nile with the putrid carcasses ul those which it scourged to untimely death ou the lulus plains of the Pyramids. It was slavery that crimsoned the hills of Melius, In one trrrible night of the massacre of the patriot Helots. In oor owa nation, it hae filled the land with mourning, reduoed tho people of twelve great States to poverty and ruin, converted smiling fields into deierli, and ret the country back a ' quarter of a oentury. The substance of the people bat been devoured, armies have been eaten op, and men educated to the profession of piratet and assassins. Io all tbit work of desolation, the very spirit of slavery has cropped oot at every step. It inaugurated as iu ser vant! and miuistert, Starvation at Anderson Villa, Yellow Fever at Nassau, Poisoning at the Crotri 'Water Worki, and foul Assassina tion at Washington. It was the fiendish spirit of slavery which tlew the nillou's beloved President; and it it that ipirit the uncon-' qoered ipirit of ilavery which yet disturbs the nation's peace. Slavery has yet III admirers, and they ought to be accursed of God aud man. It bat itt apologists, and they are Idiots, petty tyreuU and uuhoug uionle.rs. It hat also, tbank Ood I Its open enemies. They are mil lions of freemen, and they will nover cease their warfare upon this fell monster of the "torn. of all villainiee " until Its spirit aud msasory bavs been purged from the land. A Oak at Cuiim. Speaking of the crime of the Democratic party In opposing the war for the Union, In a lata speech. Gov. Morton, of Indiana, justly depicts it as follows i 'The Demooratio party has committed a crirao for which history has no pardon and Ilia memories of men no forgetfolness ) whose col on gro" darker from age to age, and for which Ibt execration! of mankind brcome inoro bit ter from generation to g eneratleu." Whim Pin Luubbr. One of the Quart! Tide teams brought out on a late trip, tome ill hundred feet of wbiie pine lumber, per feotly clear fluff, and equal to any of the Umub yluii. It was manufnetoretl at (Via Quirtivllle saw mill aud I lo bi ased at lbs Silein Foundry for Pattern!. "POLITICS MAKKH NTRANuB IIKO-l'KL-LOWS." No maxim In Iho political world, Is oflcnrr verified than that. In 18.'I2 the people wit nessed a remarhnlili) illustration of this maxim, when Daniel Webster nod Henry Clay joined hands with Andrew Jackson lo overthrow the Calhoun party of the South. Not less remark ahlo, was the combination between Slephen A. Donglai and John W. Forney on one side and tlio republican lenders on the other, lo over throw Iho Buchanan dynasty iu 1857, tipun the Kansas question. Tho extraordinary shifting of places in political ranks, in 1800, ii not to be set down to ordinary political considera tion!, or personal motives. There was a high er consideration than any mere political idea or inducement, for nil Ihoso who left their po sition iu tho Democratic ranks to join with the Republicans in the formation of the Union par ty. In fact, in most cases of leading Demo crats now in the Union party, their first con nection with tho party was made nnder tho start and stripes on tho battle field, or bivouno, while marching upon the rebel enemies of Hie country. Glorious old Ben Butler, who voted for Jeff, at Charleston, signalized hit enroll ment in tho Union party by marching strniglit from Massachusetts to tlio defence of Wash ington, In cnntiririilly tramping down "My Marylnnd" on the route. John A. Dix went Into the Union party by ordering tho Lieuten ant to "shoot any man on the spot, who at tempts to haul down tho American Flag." Douglas joined, by issuing that clarion ory to bis friends and countrymen : "There nre now but two parlies patriots and traitors. Stand by Abraham Lincoln stand by Iho govern ment." Such weru the watchwords, mid such the enndnct of men at the formation of the Union party. Is it any wonder, that it litis been triumphant! Patriotism wis the chief corner stone of our parly s and this is tho great reason demanding its iiiaiuteiiiince. Such being its origin, and Us principles, it wus not strange lo see Douglas mid Lincoln, Bunks and Duller, Seward ami Johnson on the same platfurm. But tbero was another class nf men who made no chango themselves, but who wero nevertheless carried by the events and duties of the times, Into very unenviable political fellowship. Those Democrats who preferred their party organization to their country, mon found themselves in closo nllianoo with the rebels and trojlors. All they had to do to get into the company and fellowship of the traitors, was to remain "neutral" ns they called it, or cry out "o o in p r-o m i i e." All Jeff. alteil was to be "let alone," anil Lnne, O'Mcnrn and Vallaudigham agreed to that "Let him alone." Tho war was unconslitutiouul iu their opinion, nnd the government could not coerce anybody, and so Jeff, wus iu the full tide of glorioui success, to far as any Democrat was ooncerncd; and if Democracy had ruled, the Southern Confederacy would have lie, H cstuli lished to duy, and the Union diisolved. ' If a man don't want to he enrolled among traitors and secessionists, ho must look well to bis politics. We am told that Satan. presents h(i nicked designs and evil purposct in a great variety rf ounningly devised temptations, and often makes tho "worse appear tho bettor cause." So it Is with old Jeff, the Prince of political darkness in I his country. Ho is de termined to regain bit power, or tho power, his slaveholiliug party formerly wielded, by some meant, and there is no telling in what kind of disguise it will com..'. Union men must be careful that they are not led astray by fulie doctrines. We cannot luko any grent man, in any party at a relialilo leader of Lis party. He may finally get his price fur mis leading those who follow him, and then skil fully go over to his former opponents. The only safe rule it to carefully sift every political measure, nnd tee il iiiiurei will) right and justice. Try it by your owu conscience, and if that approve!, then it will be safe to adopt it. Tim New Ohlkanh Imiikoomo. The New Orleans riot has produced quite nu entan glement of authorities and Jurisdictions. Wo have no onrreut and connected history of (lu re establishment of civil government in Lou siana, so ns lo rouble us lo Juilgu of the char acter and authority of its present Slate govern ment. In pursuance nf I.incol.i's proclama tion, of his policy authorizing a Slate govern ment upon a basis of imv lentil loyal popnlu. tlon, the loyal people of Lousiaim .held an election ou the 22ud of February 1 811 1 and elected a Convention to remodel thu State Constitution, and also elected Michael liuliii Governor. That Convention provided for ils reassembling npon the call of its preriiling officer, nud is doubtless the same vonveniioii which recently met at New Orleans, nml which gave riso to the riot. Hut whether Gov. J. Madison Wells, referred to in the dispatches, as the p resc n I Governor of the Slate, and who ordered an election lo ill Vacancies, is tho successor to Gov. 1 1 uli it under Iho "l.iu coin government," or whether be is the successnr uf somebody nppniulcd ly Pre.-, ideut Johnson, we nre not able lo say. He seems lo be a loyal man. and tu have acted in good faith. From the dispatches, il appears that General Sheridan looked upon tlio Con vention as some what revolutionary, nllhoogh he did not feel nulliornted' to iulerfero with it until some cause bad been given by its pro ceedings, which so far ns we are informed not. wus done, and therefore the Convention did not break or dislmb the peace in any way, accord ing lo Sheridan. The General seems io have taken decided objections to President Johnson sending his Instruct! tis to the Attorney Gen eral instead of Gov. Wells, aud from Ibis we infer that Sheridan regards Gov. Wells as the proper authority. Military Intli i iun General Ingalls, fuimrtly Quartermaster at Fort Vancouver, and lately Chief Quartermaster of (he army of the Polomao, recently arrived at Portland, on a lour ot inspection of the forts, etc. We also see by the Walla Walla Slaleiman thai Gen. King Butler, also missing, moved an adjournment of the house, during which time III Sergeant-at-Arim was directed to coninul the attendance of absentees. Tlio house was densely packed with frcedinen, and just after the adjournment a procession containing United mates lings and marching through tho streets with martial music, arrived at tlio JiikMiiih. Having nan a slight disturbance on Central street. At this juncture tho merchants all over the city, fear ing tho coming riot, closeil llieir stores, n lien thu procession entered tlio building, a squad of nolico followed aud attempted to make ar rests. A scene of tho wildest coiiluslon fol lowed, Pistols wero fired, clubs and canes were used, und brickbat! flew in every direc tion. The Policemen claim that they wero merely attempting lo arrest the Canal street rioters, obovo mentioned but certain it is, tliey mounted tlio platform where a small body of tho members remained, and one of ilium presented pistol upon llieir using offensive language. Tlio puliceuion wero filially driven out of the building, leaving Gov. Iluliii, Juil'o Powell and other gentlemen, with Mr. Clark, attached to tlio State Government, besides about fifty freedinen. Fortunately Gov, Wells had just left Iho building for the pur pose of consulting with Gen. liuird about call ing out troops, Gen. Sheridan being out of town. The institution used now as tlio State Capitol is located iu Drynilo street, between Canal nud Common, ami when the policemen were driven out, tliey hoio met by a largo hodv of freedinen. wiio cau ed Ihem to fall back lo Canal street. They rallied and drove I lie freedinen back to Common it'cct, unci in turn were driven back lo Canal street, leaving Dryailo street perfectly clear of any vcsligu of humanity except the bodiel of llireo dead freedinen. A lire engine was brought nut and played nu the front of the institute; for what nuriioto I do not know. Several attempts were iiiiido bv the nolico lo enter tho building, but thev were repulsed. Tho niiiiiiuuilion of the men in the- institute seemed to give nut nlmut this time, as llu v did not fire any more, and tliey ntteiiiptcd lo escape through the rear of the institute into liarroe street, nut wero met and eilher arrested or shut down. They ttlnn attempted lo escape throiiL'li tho nlley which runs from Dryailo street lo Barrone ou the Canal street side. I don't know that any fieedmeli succeeded ill gelling uway from the building nlive, ullhmiuli 1 saw several at a considerable distance from it, being niiuched to police headquarters.
