John Maker has just fin ished a kiln of 170,000 brick, and has another kiln of 150,000 about ready to fire. Baker is an en terprising man, somewhat tumultuous in a polit ical argument, but a good brick-maker, and a hearty, whole-souled man. He says that hit neighbor Starbuck has a kiln of 125,000 first-rate brick nearly ready for market, and hopes he will find ready aale for them. Mr. Starbuck is a "Seventh-Day Baptist," and was fined for work ing on the usually observed Sunday. Baker aays thia is all wrong, and desires to see his neighbor do well, aud this neighborly feoliugon the part of Mr. Baker is a credit to any man. 17 Improvements are going on all oror town. The. extent of intoxication by brandy, and its constant in crease, aro beginning to arouse the attention of our medical world. France, brilliant as Paris may lie. is seriously affected by the onuses which are sensibly dcterionting her population. Her greatest curse is her army, which by an nually ewecping 100,000 of the flower of her ynnth into the service 50,000 of whom never return home valid men makes her weaker children the fathers of her next generation. Tho barrenness of marriage is her next ourse i no parents have more than two children, the majority have only one child. Alcohol is an other curse. Iu a parish in the Department of the Lower Seine, which contains only 9,000 souls, men, women and infnnts. the annual consumption of spirits is 14,000 gallons; and this parish is instanced not an exceptional ex ample, hut as a frequent case in the provinces. In 1857 there were 176 lunatics admitted, GO of whom went mad from indulgence iu spirits ; in 1851 there were 171 insane admitted, 42 of whom were deranged by ardent spirits. Switz erland sedate, abstemious, frognl Switzerland has not escaped the plague ; in the canton of Berne alone, there were twunty-five times aa much brandy consumed in 18G0 at in 1811. It is in northern nations the increase nf the con sumption of ardent spirits is specially noticea ble. There, even more than in France, the evil tells on the population, threatening them wiih rapid decline intellect as well as in lioilv. Sweden alone consumes nearly 200.000.000 quarts of ardent spirits annually. It is to America that eyes are tnrned with great appre hension. It is felt iu Europe that the last lour years of war have, in a great measure, andone the labors of temperance advocates who had worked in that cause for fifty years paat. Life in camp, the anxieties consequent upon those political aud financial throes which must ensue alter the war ends, it is believed, must add to the increased rate of consumption of anient spirits wincn is now taking place everywhere. It is I elieved that the great disproportion be tween males and females which has, for some years, been notioed in tbe New England States will add to this increased consumption of ar dent sniritt.Jiy an increase of various vices, and that, for years to come, the New England pop ulation will tend to deteriorate. Lincoln om the Stump M. D. After a moment') panse he continued, 'l acknowledge that yon most main tain ynnr opposition just there, if at all. Hut I find that every man comes into the world with a mouth to be fed, and aback to be clolh ed s that each also hat two bands ; and I infer that those bands were made to feed that mouth and to clothe that back. And I warn yon. Kentnckians, that whatever institution would fetter those hands from so doing, violates that justice which is Die only political wisdom and is sure to crnmhle around those who seek to nphold it. This is the constant testimony of the meo who founded this republic It was ibis that made Jellerion tremble fur his conn try when he remembered that God is jntt; and thia that made voor own great statesman, lien. ry Clay, pray that his tongue might cleave to the root of Ins mootn ere it toted to carry sla very into any territory where it did not exist. Slavery ia wrong; the denial of that truth has brought on tbe angry cnnniot of bra titer with brother : it baa kiudird the lire of civil war in Kansas ; it has raised the portents that overhang the fatnre of oar nation. And be too sure Ibat do compromise, no political arrangement with slavery will ever last which aoee not deal with It aa a great wrong. f7 From statistics received at tbs arricul toral bnreao it appears that the present wool crop of the country is less than one hnndted minion pooniit per annum. Sentinel of June 30th says : General Sully in a private letter from Sioux City, gives the following Interesting account of tbe grasshopper plague which it desolating the rigiun of couutry he has traversed. . lie says : " The ouly thing spoken about here it the grasshopper. They art awful ; they' aotnally have euten holes in my wagon covers and in the 'paulins that cover my stores. A soldier on his way here laid down to sleep in the mid dle of the day on tho prairie the troops had been marching all night. His oomrades noticed him covered with grasshoppers and woke bim. His throat and wrists wero bleeding from tho bites of these insects. This is no fiction. Last year, about fivo days march from the Yellow stone, we met the army of .grasshoppers on thoir way east. After that I suffered greatly for grass, and many of my animals died. Tho grasshoppers made a general cleaning down to this place, and here they disappeared. This year they appeared very small at first, but they arei fast growing, and getting wingt, when I suppose they will start somewhere else. These insects that have appeared this year art) no doubt from tho eggt of those last year, for there are none above Kandall, or far east at this. I wonder what the Quartermaster General in Washington would say if he should receive a report of tents, wagon covers and 'paulins on- serviceable and condemned, eaten up by grass- oppors. Utf Urantlreth'ss VEGETABLE UNIVERSAL FILLS. IT It generally known that my Grandfather was tha original inventor of these remarkable pills. He waa a scientific man, and medical prartiliotntr of the Old School. But becoming alarmed at the mor tality that attended tbe Bleeding and Mineral Prac tice, he turned his attention to the study of nature and tht philotophv of disease, as alto to tbe natural reme dial agenta which he found to exiat exclusively in the Vegetable Kingdom. In bis reaenrchea and invest!, gallons, he became fully tatisHed that tht lift waa in tht blood; that by whatever name diseases were die tinguished, impurity of the blood waa tits tonree of all a titnpie and truthful doctrine, which, In reducing all diseases to a milt, necessarilv established the feet that all were to be treated on the aautt general prin ciples, vit: by purgation. Now the grand diHicnlty consisted in devising a veg etable oomponnd that would Invigorate, purify, and cleanse the blood, oorreot and regulate all the differ ent secretions, and by purgation discharge the whole, mats of morbid matter from the body, without reduc ing the strength. Alter thirty years of eloae applica tion, he considered bit object fullr accomplished in the production ol these pills, which have now bean before the pnblie One Hundred and Poarteen Tears, and it is now (lStio) nearly 31 years since Ur. Bran dretlt'a Vegetable Uuiversal Life Preserving Pills were Ilrst prener.ted to the American public during which time their superior excellence and virtues havt been extensively proclaimed by papers and pamphlets, and a rapid yearly increase of the sale of them ef fected. To know what will save Ufa. to know what will , restore health, la a knowledge not to be hidden, I, theretore, as a man desiring to do my duty faithfully, ' have dotted down some of my thirty-live years' expe rience with Bmndretb't Pills, whlon sre an elTeotual assistant of nature, and cause the expnlsiou of acri monious humors the occasion of every eiokneee. tall . ' ut admit that corrupt humors prevent tltt fret eireo. ka li on of tlis blood, that Drandreth'a Pi Hi lake oat these humors, giviug health for paiu, and strength for weakness. No man la tick save when ths principle of eorrnp tion gett the aaeendeneyi Bntndreth's Pills aid tba Life Principle to regain Ihe empire hy removing tbe corrupt humors from the body. Many a time I bave seeu life apparently at tbe last ebb, when theee Pills were given, and in a few hours the danger was pact, and health's Mood lids gave the patient renewed life and vigor. Many are the fathers, mothers, son, and danghtera, tbna saved. These eelebrated Pills are composed wholly of me dicinal herbt, and do not oontain auy mercury or other mineral, being perfectly harmless to Ihe 83 oat tender age or weekeet framei yet sure to search out the onus of sickness, and restore tbs health if taktn according to the directiona. Let no one imagine they are too weak to bear tht) effect of theee Pills, which put no weakness into the frame, bat drmws Weakness out. A few doeos will be get conlidence, aud then the beauties of purgation will gradually become unfolded to our view, which, en forced with llrsiidretk's Vegetable Uuiversal Pills, is able to cure every disease where the organs are sound, and greatly Increase the average of human life. I hare uow need on my own person, snd prepared and administered, Brandretli'a Pillt for thirty.lv yean. I believe they are the beet purgative in tbt) v world; and with thit medical qnalitv they have ale a tonic effect. And at I am of the urra opinion that Inflammation and fevers are caused by corrupted blood Dot being timely evacuated, because it regurgi tates, to to tpnak, over the whole body, and thua 00 r rnpls the sound blood that should nourish ail the ae sa ltern, and actually destroys and paralyse! members or orgaua that are unsound; end as 1 kuow tbat thee Pills have direct effect to remove all corrupt blood and acrimooioiit hnmori from the bodv in fact, all humors below the vital standard of health; to I thoald bt guilty of a great tin, did I not do all In my power to propagate tbe use of a medicine which it poaeeettd of properties to calculated to save and iutroas tbe average of human life.
