A fuel which, in itself, is sufficient to knock the wind out of the copperhead argument that the war must sometime stop from mere exhaustion. tF"Mnryland has done very well financially by rejecting tht relo l solicitations tn join the Confederacy; has diminished its expenditures in the last year, redeemed $322,645 of its ltoeks ; invested $270,023 iu sinking fund, and now lias tl.u-iU.ltt iu ine trensnry. n un uano some balances to the school and sinking funds. Exchange. tV Material for pnper having become ex ceedingly scarce iu consequence of the wnr, ingenious manufacturers have adopted the plan of adding to the pulp q'iile a largo ptoporlioii of the fibre of wood. One of our exchanges is printed on paper containing so much wood that it actually breaks In doubling back and forth a few times, and yet it present a very good apivarauce and answers all the purposes of a newspaper. Talk about a country be coming exhausted which cau flourish upon such expedients ! Nonsense. IV A democratio exchange asks," "If you are true lo a man when he h true, does it fol low that yon must ba true In him when he is false?" Whether it oogbt or not to be so, it does follow, in the case nf copperheads and Jeff Dnvis. with this difference : they are truer tn him in Ms falsein s than they ever Were In bis truth. ItT Tliu Uuiuu press has always contended that the course pursued by Northern democrats siuco llio w ar begnu, had i direct encouraging inllnenoe npnu the rebels; that the latter look ed upon the factious cuuduct of tliu democrat as the best thing they could do for the rebell ion, without actuully taking up arms iu iis be half. The copperhead newspapers havu made a show of denying the fact of such an influ ence, and some of them have gimo so far as to declaro a solemn belief that the rebels feared mid dreaded tho success of tho Northern de mocracy far tnoro than that of tho party now in power. Such declarations, however, have never had the effect nf convincing anybody either nf their truth or tho superior loyalty nf their authors, ,. As the Presidential contest for 1804 draws near, we find the rebel papers aro beginning tn discuss its bearings upon tho prospects uf tlio Confederacy. So far as wo have seen ex tracts from the in in Northern papers, the tone of them till is similar or identical with that of tliu Richmond Examiner, which declares tlmt any chiingo from Mr. Lincolu must he to the advantage of the rebellion. A very significant extract, is tho following from a speech by a Mr. Staples, of Virginia: . 'i' ' "Tlioiurh wr can but despise these men Northern ileinocrain for their perrlily toward thoir own section, yet, us Mar conduct tendt to emtiarram our powerful and uiitcrvpulout enemy, we should prove recrsunt to our (Inly to 'our own country nut to encourage thit conduct for our own advantage." Here we havo tho testimony of n rebel ns to tho intimate relationship of Northern demo crats with the rebellion drawn out ol him, too. by the deep Interest to his cause involved in the coming election of a President. He pro poses tn encourage tho Vnllaiidighitins, Woods, &o., of tho North, that in return the rebels nmy have a corresponding ciioourtigoment from their success. Whether they succeed in the election or not, he expects strength to the Con federate cause from the embarrassment with which democrats will surrouud tho Administra tion, by their present, course of conduct. A man witli a single idea above treason could have predicted tho effect of democratio factiousness without tho testimony of Mr. Sta ples. tV We learn from privato sources that the copperheads and the go-betweens who hang about equally upon tho Union and copperhead parties, iu nearly all tho counties, had been looking with great satisfaction npnn what they thought tho prospeot of quarrels in the coonty conventions. Their expectations resulted from two causes: first, tho desperate efforts made hy oopperheads and the go-betweens to stir up old feuds and animosities among Union men, nnd second, from the indiscreet conduct of a few politicians and scribblers belonging to the Uu ioii party, who wished to fix tho conviction upon the public mind that nono but thoso of certain political antecedents could be trusted In official stations. It is a fortunate thing for the Union party tint such efforts have not boruo their legitimate fruits. In spite of them, the Uuion conven tions hare been held in harmony seldom ex ceeded, and wherever nominations aro made, the Union men of all political antecedents are going to give the candidates a hearty and effi cient support. This is as it should bo. This is not a time tn wrnnglo over minor nnd unim portant distinctions, and no man who has the honor of the State nud tho success of tho Un ion cause at heart, will now stun to iuuuiro whether his neighbor nud he agreed or differed in old times, so that they agree nuw on the vi tal issues of tho day. Agreement note and mutual effort tn sustain the authorities nnd the war, nro the paramount duties of Union men. Let them be careful that snaky go-betweens and designing demagogues do not divide them, Iu the ruin of tho Uuion cause in this State. VP" Tho yl"iericait Flag, formerly published nt Sonorn, Cat., has been removed to San Francisco, and is tn bu issued ns a daily.
