Physicians having no practical knowledge of insanity, have given uso to the Idea, entertained by tho people, that a monoma niac is only partially insane, and in conscquenco is not dungcrous 10 run ai largo, mis is a great error ; all insane persons are dan- ' etnas. CURABILITY OF INSANITY. , , W canoot better answer this question than by quoting the re marks of the celebrated Dr. llrigham. who for many years was the Resident Physician of the New York Slate Insane Asylum ut Utica. He renmrks, "There are few serious diseases in which . , early treatment is more nvrntiul for recovery than iusauity, and few in which it is more likely to be successful. A lurgr majority of the rrcrnl rates of disease rtcivr, when subjected to early and judicious treatment, and removed from homo and from places where the exciting causes of tho disease teud to perpetuate it. We there fore earnestly entreat thoso a lio have the guardianship of the in sane not to neglect early treatment" If this earnest and truthful appeal was necessary in Now York It is doubly so in Oregon at the present time, when tliia predic tion in the realization of the very state of things predicted, has, unhappily, by the want of an Asylum, been ouly too well verified with a numoor in our care. rvrLKAiARr PaRDicAMKNT. The following is probably ono of the most severo piuct's of invective that ever issued from the pen of Prentice, of the Lousville JouRSAf,. The subject is the to Copperhead candidute for Governor in Kentucky : We d'ul not think it worth while cither to listen to C. A. Wickliffe's speech here or to get a reprt of it. We hear that he was excessively vindictive in Ins denun. ciation of us. We can readily believe it. He is all bitterness. Take away his bit terness and there wouldn't bo enough of linn left to make a small lnp doe. 11 was a bitter young man, and he is a bitter old one. Me first brought himselt into no. tice half century aijo by eating off i gentleman's ear, ami it would seem as if the ear, saturated with tho venom of his fniigs, had been festering and rotting upon his stomach ever since, making his breath and his words a public nuisance. All the secretions of his body are in his biliary ducts and in his gall-bladder. Ho is in- capable either of cherishing attachment or being the object of it. He has no more genial feeling than a hyena or a ghoul His soul is a spider tlint sucks trotn all things alike. It would seem as if, like Snencer's impersonation of Euvv. he were always chewing a toad, from tlie manner in which venom is forever dripping trom his jaw, whilst inwardly be "chews his own maw.7' l lie hate tnat coils in ins soul has its echo in his voice, and its pho tograph in his luce. A thousand disap pointed hopes and blasted expectations revel and rage and madden in the hell of his bosom like so many bends in tneir own fiercer hell. Wiokliftu, during some brief fieriods of his life, has been thrown by his lopes of aggrandizement into co-operation with truo nnd enlightened statesmen, but ho has always telt liimsclt ill nt ease their company, nm) made haste to escape trom it. lie bus telt at home only airioriii inalignunts and destructives. How me ancholy it is to contemplate such a being n comparison with a man like John Crittenden, the one overflowing with all tho best ami noblest thoughts and altec turns ot our nature, enjoying happiness and dilluiiiig it uroiind linn, and givuti; u lib great and enthusiastic soul tn the pro motion of the greatest good of his country and of mankind, ntnl the other brooding ever upon evil thought, vile antipatbie ami fa-1 1 conspiracies, trusting nobody and trusted by nobody, envying the good and fearing the rivalry of the bad, holding himselt aloot Irotn all the sweet anil gontl sympathies of his nice like a beast of prey uymg stendily up through every year a store of bitterness for other years, and finally, at bis three scoro ami ten or three score anil tiltoen, preparing lor tho close of his must unhappy life by an attempt to betray Ins country into tho powor ot a accursed rebellion. Tho thought of wlm ho-bn been, nnd is, must bo a coal of fire in his brum, and an enraged adder in his heart. (Jno would think be might well re joice at growing bald, for he must feel as if every hair on his head were a serpent Kke the hair of the Eumeiiides. We pity this old limn almost as much as we loathe nnd abhor him. There cannot live,as Si William Temple bays, a more wretched being than tin ill-natured and malignan old man, who is neither capablo of recciv. ing pleasures nor sensible of doing them to others. Wu advise bun, old as ho is nnu peevish, ulcerated and querulous as his mind may be, to try to reform, anil a least mako a sticnlice to uod ot tho devil scanty leavings, lest in his last hcur blue despair shall sit like a screech owl over his head.
