manded the surrender of Memphis, which was
complied with. Soon after our troop took mis
siusion of the town.; The next day, June 7th,
flag offioer Farrngut'a squadron arrived off
Viokiburg, and Porter's mortar fleet descended
the river to co-operate with Farragnt in an at
tack opon Vltkuburg. On the 8ih of June a
portion of Farragut'i fleet attaoked nnd si.
lenced the batteriei at Grand Gulf. On the
19th nf June ten mortar boata from below
posaed Rodney (Mian.), on their way to Join thi
aquadron. On the 2iJth of Juno a portion nf
the low or Union fleet attaoked and panned the
hatteriea at Vickeburg, under a heavy fire
Preparations were now made tn Isolate the city
by cutting a cannl aornna a peninaula opposite,
the town. On the 12th of July 3,000 ilaves

sas esoapes from Yaioo river, runs the gaunt
let of the Union fleet, and takos refuge under
tbt gnna of Vickabnrg.
July 22d The canal completed, but owing
to the low stage of water It did not prove a
sncoess. The siege was then praotically aban
doned until after the rise of Western waters in
the Fall. .
On the 23d a tprr'ffo bombardment of the
town br the squad; nn wns unuoc-irul.
On the 24tli, the naval liege was railed by
Com, Farftgut, aud within a few days Lie ves
sela withdrew.
On the 3d of October General McClernand
was appointed to the command of a depart
ment created expreaily to open op the Minis
aippi river by the capture nf Vicksburg. Dur
ing the Winter tiionthi Porter whs engaged in
fitting nut a fleet of gunboats for operatiotia
open Viokiburg. .
On the 26th of December an expedition un
der General Sherman aicended the Yazoo river
about eighteen milea. Here the tronpa were
lauded, aud on the following day they attacked
the advanced worka of the enemy, extending
six miles hack of Vickilmrg. Meanwhile the
cunhoata attacked the batteries on Haines
Bluff. A portion of the expedition wai alio
.sent not to deitroy the Vlukiliuig and Shreve
port Kuilroad. In order tu prevent the arrival
of reinforcetnenti.
On .he 2?th and 28th. after a stubborn con
teat, the Confederatea were driven from their
firit and second lines of defense, nnd the Fed
erals ndvanued to within two aud a hull miles
of the city
On the 20ih. the Confederates having been
heavily reiulorved from Grenada, and along the
railroad, attacked General Sherman with t. eir
Whole fnroe, aud succeeded in driving him hack
to his first line of defeme. General Mirriiiiui
bad counted upou the co-nperution of Generul
Grant in I lie attack, hut that General had been
compelled to rail haok from Holly Springs,
which not only made it Impossible' lor him to
cooperate with Klieriiinu, hut had given the
Ctmleilerafe the opirlimity of throwing in
the reinforcements linin Grenada.
On the lit of January General Sherman was
operwded by General McClernnnd, and on
the 2d thu expedition withdrew from the viciu
Ity of Vickihurg.

January 83d The fleet from Cairo passed
down the Mnaiuippi, and reached the scene of
operations to co-operate with the hind furocs
and prosecute the siege vigorously. -
January 30th General Grant arrives at the
scene of opeintinns nnd aiiumes the chief com
mand. ' The enemy plants a battery on lower
end of the canal to retard the dirgurs aud pre
vent the completion of their work.
February 2d Knni Queen of the West runs
the gauutlet of the Vickihurg batteries, which
poured out a furious cannonade. Hie itnppi d
at Vidalia, nppoilte Nntchet, and then pro
cecded down the river, scattering terror among
the rebel craft aud creating a panio along the
banks on either side. She succeeded in cap
turing three rebel ganhoits and nearly destroy

pital! at Nashville, which proves ooorlosively
that sick soldiers appreciate loud for the slum
