SANBin UtV ClUttUTER OP TIIK OPERA TIONS ASAlNSniCKSBUHi. An eye witness of the battle of Champion Hill wtitci : The rebel fire wn becoming exceedingly troublesome, when De Gnyler opened upon the line of the skirmish in the edge of the timber, and dropped shot and shell among them with out mercy. Thii caused him to cease firing for an instant, but aa our line advanced the fire of the enemy became more violent a hundred rod) to the right where (hull could not easily pene trate. Our brave troops essayed to advance, bnt could not withstand the torriblu storm, and r and were feroed to fall on their facet and let the tempest pass over their heads. An open plat of ground was discovered on the right of the timber, and, limbering op hie guns, De Qtil yer made a wide detour to t(je right and plant ed them there. He was quickly In position, and opened a terrible enfilading fire upon the enemy. While De Oolyer wae thus hurling his missiles of destruction along the edge of the forest, it was noticed the rebel fire suddenly died away, and the knowing onea said they were about to charge the buttery. Ppe enough , five minutes afterward, a brigiide of rebel in fantry emerged from the forest, looking, from my point of observation, at if they leaped bodi ly forth from the earth. They advanced iu olid columns and magnificent style. Waiting . till they bad reached a point two hundred yards from the mouth of the cannon, tho gunners ' iprang to their pieces and discharged them, a terrible volley, full in the facet of the advanc ing columns. At the sume moment the battery on the hill tide opened on them, exploding four ehcllt where the rank were firmest. This tor- rible enfilading and cross firo these gallant men t could not withstand, and they quickly sought the cover of the forest. Thrice was this splen did feat essayed, and thrice Were they beaten , back with great slaughter. This skirmishing and cannonading were oonlinned fur nit hour and the enemy were driven further into tiie , fastnesses of the forest. At tbfa time t gener al advance wat ordered. Tho troops, in two . lines, advanced in order of battle and received a terrible fire. They entered the edge of the timber and fought on equal tonus with the en emy, except that the rebels hnd the crest of the hill. Tho enemy massed his forces on the right and attempted to flunk ns by superiority of numbers, Gen. Smith's and Gen. Hteveusou'i brigades fixed their bayonets nnd drove all he- fore them like elm IT before the whirlwind. Disappointed in their intention of lumlng our right flank, they turned their attention lo our left, where Col. Blaek.and Oen. MeGinni were stationed. For a time they poured terrible vol leys into their ranks, mid forced tlieni to yield ecelving relnfot II. (be order 'chil menu irom wrocxer h illusion. i lie order , 'charge Imyonots" was given here ulsn, unil the enemy fell back in tho iilumst cniiliisioii. Il is import, lible to convey an adequate idea of the (daugh ter occasioned on the right unci center of the line. The ground was lilerully covered with the dead and dying. In the ravines, behind treet, on the summit of the bills, lay the unlor tunute men of both armies, tome of them in death's icy grasp, others with wounds of every description hero au iirm cut off by cannon balls, there a leg hanging by the muscles. It Wat a lickcnitig sight. '' The Year or Ninks An ingenious math ematician hat made the following calculations In regard to the figures of (hit present year of 1863 1 Add the first two figures, 1 aud 8, and yon have the total 8 ; and ike lust two, 6 and 3 give the tame result. The first twoflgnres theni vlrct added, make O.nnd are, reversed, the pro duct of I) multiplied by 0. Sulilruot 18 from 63, and there remains 45, which figures added tnakeO. Divide 63 by 18, tho quotient it 3 and the remainder 9. Multiply the four liguret 1. 8, 6, 3, one by Ibe other, aud the result it 144, whicb figures added innko 0. Add the four figures, 1, 8, 6, 3, together, and you get 18, which in turn added together make D. Di vide 18C3 by 9, the quotient it HU7, and add these three figures, the total it 0. The addi tional combinations to be traced are infinite, from whicb the genius who discovered this cu riont feature argues that the year will prove ucnlially oue til revolutions. . tZT Treasurer Cheesman hot been instruct ed by the Treasury Department to receive United States notes for subscription to six per ceut. 8 1!U years' bonds at par.
