This de cision will relieve Mrs. Canningbam from the charge of felony as regards the baby fraud, while it subjects her, as well as ber daughters, to indictment and prosecution for perjury, they having both positively sworn that the marriage took place. The Richmoud Enquirer says that about three ytars ago, Miss Anne Vv. Taliaferro. of Clog William County, Ye., emancipated 49 nevroes, giving each $160. Thev were placed in a Quaker settlement ia Ohio, by C. 7. Scott, executor of the estate. A few wetks since, Mr. Scott had occasion to visit tlem on business, and found them in a wretched condition, almost starving. One ef the children had been stolen, and several had died for want of attention and the ne cessaries of life. They begged Mr. Scott to .allow them to return with him to Virginia, ana go into slavery. This is the state in which seven-eighths of the slaves who are inveigled awav from their masters fiud themselves. The condi tion of those poor creatures who have been nulri into Canada, is most miserable, and a lare proportion of them 'would gladly return to their masters had they any encour agement or means to do so. What badly expended philanthropy is this stealing away neroe from a comfortable home and com paratively easy life. If so. then the approaching winter will be very severe, as the oaks throughout the hills and mountains are lit erallv groaning beneath the weight of a sopera- Donaant crop of acorn, it ta an interesting tact in this connection, that since the Americans have been ia this 8tate. this indication has alwavs ore- ceded a hard winter. Onr northern merchants woold do well not to neglect this Indian sign. Did not the troubles of the Revo lution sharpen the wits of the women T A Miss Rebecca Franks was present at a splendid ball at New York, given by the British officers to the ladis of that city. During an interval of dancing, Sir Henry Clinton, who had been previously engaged in conversation with Miss Franks, called out to the musicians " Give ns Britons, Strike Home.' ' The commander-in-chiof," eaid Miss Franks, " has made a mistake; he meant to say, 1 Britons, go pome.7 " Rather Pointed. " Why will you preach to us every Sabbath about the damnation of infants asked a sturdy parishioner. ' Be cause it is my duty to do so!" answered the pastor, impressively. "Oh! I dare say, aad it's all very well to hold forth about it once in a while but why every Sabbath f " Because I am constrained to preach upon it contiuaUy!" " Constrained? Who con strains you?"
