r - - i WMllPs-a Kmtom States AirI-r Sir II la to el do-. that' wo see auryt.ina; t the Boat concerning Orron, thai yon probably think that delightful Territory la entirely rbi-got y eastern Wand. It la Very trte tnai. """" I -pie are bueytne themselves about aa!ra in Kan JU and .Win the pr. the fertile plain, of Iowa, Minnesota and Missouri, they are moat lamentably Ignorant of any of the ronntriea vreet of the Rock y mountain. Even eastern members or Congress, who ttnM know kit about our vaWr country, ovtneo not only a perfect indifference aa to the roat northwest, but actually belie re. that section aa cold and barren a the remote ahorea of Labrador and Newfoundland on tun northeast .coast. The truth Is, there are no book or statis tics of recent date that can (Ire any, or the feast TaluaMe information on the subject. Truo, the archive of Congress have report from Oovern ors and agent respecUnf the value of lands in Oregon, Wash! Often, and California, but the fah Ate the reading and interested public cannot lay their astasia on any ready information. Tool wtust not, however, suppose that the north west U or haa been entirely forgotten. The Harp or advertise to issne, during- the month of June, a very valuable work, entitle, "The Northwest Coast," from the pen of Mr. James O. Swan, who was stationed at Shoalwater bay, as a Govern ment officer, from l"f3 to 1&3, under lien. Adair, the Collector at AMoria. Mr. Swan has written a wotk which will give the desired information respecting the value of tbe country of the Colum bia, with its discovery nasi early history. From the fact that Mr. Swan ha received valuable in formation and assistance at Washington, 1). C, the facts he will publish will not only exonerate the people of Oregon and Washington Territories from the unjust chargea made y una. v 001, out may be taken for the etpoaition of the views held by the Ute administration relative to the Indian troubles. The book, which is of some 4o0 pages, is full of Interesting information, Illustrated with numerous spirited sketches, taken by Mr. Swan Seme of hi scenes at Shoalwater bay will be fully recognized by the residents on the Columbia, and will cause many a hearty laugh among all other reader who can enjoy a joke. The importance of information relative to Ore gon and Washington at the present time, may be seen from the fact that, as I have been credibly informed by the Messrs. Harpers, the simple an nouncement of the work being in prs was nv " ticed in a long articlo in a London literary jour nal, accompanied by an order from the editor for ' fifty copies. . Mr. Hwun is an old friend and acquaintance of mine, and yon may be sure he takes a deep inter est in the welfare of our Territory. He is at pres ent in this city, preparing a aerie of articles, calling the attention of emigrants to the great ad vantages of Oregon and Washington. You maydrpend npon it, there la a feeling be ing aroused among the down-easters, very favor able to a large emigration by watw; not of farm ers, altogether, but of shipwrights, mechanics and - whalemen men who wish to make a change, but not being fitted" for a life on the western prairie, are glad to learn that there is a section of new country where they can settte aud tarn their tal ents to good account. Onr shipwrights here have been perfectly surprised at the description I have riven them of the two beautiful vessels lately launenea npon mo vnipu nvw, aim pi the facility with which tho best sbipctimber is ob tained. Business iu this city is very dull, aud bnt few . . , t - - , vessels are boiUiiug either here or in the other . esfsicru States. I will forward yon some of the papers containing Mr. Swan's articles. Mean time, I remain, respectfully, Your ob't scrv't. . O. L. 8. S p t e f a I Xctlcet. HM-t ov t Pitt Tnaoxrc I"rri C-aEO.
