IN THE "GOOD OLD TIMES."
Facts "Which Bhow Hew Much Better
Off We Are To-Day.
Not until February of 1812 did the
people of Kentucky know that Madi
son was elected President In the pre
vlous November.
In 1834 one of the leading railroads
of the United States printed on Its
time table: "The locomotive will leave
the depot every day at 10 o'clock, If
tho weather Is fair."
The first typewriter was received by
the public with suspicion. It seemed
subversive of existing conditions. A
reporter who took one Into a courtroom
first proved Its real worth.
In England, some centuries ago, If
nn ordlnnry workman, without permis
sion, moved from one parish to another
in search of work or better wages, he
wns branded with a hot Iron.
When Benjamin Franklin drat
thought of starting a newspaper In
Philadelphia many of his friends ad
vised against It, becauso there was a
paper published In Boston. Some of
them doubted that the country would
bo able to support two newspapers.
One hundred years ago, tho fastest
land travel In tho world was on the
Great North Road, In England, nftor It
hnd been put Into Its best condition.
There tho York mall conch toro along
at tho rata of ninety miles n day, and
many persons confidently predicted Di
vine vengeance on such unseemly
haste.
When ThomtiB Jefferson wns elected
President of tho United States, on Feb
ruary 17, 1801, nftor ono of Uio most
exciting political campaigns In our his
tory, the gratifying nows did not reach
tho successful candidate for ns many
days as It now takes hours to transmit
the result of a presidential election to
tho whole civilized world.
When, In 1M), Richard Trovlthlck ut
tered the following words, thero were
many who considered him an Insano,
dangerous person: "The present gen
crntlon will uso canals, the next will
prefer railroads with horses, but tholi
more enlightened successors will cm
ploy steam cnrrlagos on railways as
tho perfection of the art of convey
ance" When Benjamin Franklin first took
tho coach from Philadelphia to New
York ho spent four days on tho Jour
ney, lie tells us that, as tho old drlvor
Jogged along, ho spent his time knit
ting stockings. Two stngo conchos and
eight horses sufllccd for all the com
morco that was carried on betweou
Boston and Now York, and In win
ter the Journey occupied a wcok.
Napoleon, at tho height of his pow
er, could not commnnd our everyday
conveniences, such as steam heat, run
ning water, bath and sanitary plumb
ing, gas, electric light, ralroads, steam
boats, tho telegraph, the telephone, tho
phonograph, dally newspapers, maga
zines, and a thousand other blessings
which are now part of the dally ne
cessities of oven manual laborers.
When tho first two tons of anthra
cite coal wore brought Into Philadel
phia, In 1803, the good people of that
ity, so the records state, "tried to
burn the stuff; but, at length, disgust
ed, they broke It up and made a walk
of It" Fourteen years later, Colonel
George Shoemaker sold eight or ten'
wagon loads of It In the same city, but
warrants were soon Issued for his ar
rest for taking money under false pre
tenses. Success Magazine.
AYS TEACH BLIND BY EAR.
Ttr, Hsllar Declare ToMctt Bjrat.as la
Not Heat for Then.
Dr. ITcllcr, director of the Jowlsh
Institute for Blind Children, describes
some highly Interesting and Important
observations which he has made In re
cent years, says tho Vienna correspond
ent of tho Now York World.
Ilo Insists that tho educators of the
blind are wrong In iiMuiuing from the
first that the mind of tho blind Is
awakened and Instructed by tho sense
of touch. Ho says that tho progres
slve phenomena of a blind child's de
velopment nro so mlnuto as to be
microscopical. Hut closest study has
revealed to him that, except In those
who are also deaf, the blind are de
veloped mentally by hearing, not by
touching.
Dr. Heller lnya down tho law that
schools for tike blind of the future
must teach them to recognize by tho
ear what they have learned to conceive
by touching material, dimensions,
form, numbers and so on. Ho snys,
too. that In teaching thorn great atten
tion must bo devoted to changing tho
passive Imagination of tho blind Into
active Imagination, a process very slow
because tho blind aro nearly enthralled
by passive Imagination. Hut It Is this
change to actlvo Imagination which
awakens the creative power In them.
Tho cliango can be effected slowly,
very slowly, by giving blind children
freedom In their play, by letting them
represent In their own way what they
grasp of nature and of life nnd by
placing at their disposal materials and
tools and leaving to them what they
will make with them and how they
will set about It.
lint Dr. Heller says with emphasis
that their teachers should never forget
that tho hand of tho blind is tho organ
that at once understand and executes,
and that If they aro rightly taught to
pcrcelvo their manual capacity must
bo the moat perfect of all.
Iloaton lllank Votea.
The ballot law of Massachusetts tins
been recommended for adoption In oth
er States because It compels tho voter
to express a preference for each candi
date, nnd thus In theory favors "upllt
ticket" voting, says the New York
World, it has another curious quality
the number of blank ballot it pro
duces. Parker, for President, had 10,000
plurality In Iloston, but, about 0,000
ballots cast wero not marked for this
office at all. Douglas plurality was
BJ.078 In tho largest vote cast, but even
for Qovornor tliero wero 4,016 blanks.
For Lieutenant Governor thero were
D.7B7 blanks, for Secretary of State 18.
776, and so on In generally Increasing
ratio until 23,2ft) blanks out of a total
vote of only 00,034 testified that 24 per
cent of the voters didn't caro a pencil
nark who was to be sheriff.
Evidently the Boston problem Is not
to get the voters to the polls, but to
make them .take the trouble to voto
right through the "bill of fare" when
tX " are there.
