FLYING REPTILE8 OF OLD. Of Great Blre, They Were Once More Common Than Birds. Wo are apt to think of reptiles ns creeping nnd crawling things, forget ting that there was a time when flying reptiles were mora common than birds. Theso reptiles, tho pterodactyls, or fly ing dragons, not only flew, but souio of them reached n slr.o much greater than that of any bird, for tho largest birds do not fly. Tho South American condor sometimes measures as much as ten and onc-hnlf feet from tip to tip of outstretched wings, and it Is quite possible thnt tho finest examples of the albatross may measure a llttlo more. But tho great pterodactyls which flew about tho sea that in tho days of old reached from the Gulf of Mexico to tho Rocky Mountains, meas ured ns much as twenty feet, tho width of an avcrogo city lot, across their wings. Most of us have seen an eagle flying, nnd we can appreciate tho size of this ancient dragon by remembering thnt It was nearly tbrco times the slzo of an eagle. It wns not, however, thrco times as heavy, for the body of tills strnngo reptile was so small nnd Its skeleton so wonderfully light that tho entire animal Is thought to have weigh ed not more than twcnty-llvo pounds, or only about iib much as n large con dor. Ono of tho largest bones of tbo wing, two feet long and two Inches through, was, as Prof.- Wllllston tolls us, no thicker than a sheet of blotting paper, nnd tbo great head, wltli a beak ot cr three feet long, wns equally light. This great toothless beak Is believed to have been used for snapping up tlsbes; nnd wo can Imagine this hugo creaturo sailing swiftly over the sea, now and then swooping down to pick up a flsh as deftly, for nit its size, as a r;al swallow. But what did Ornlthostomn this is the animal's name do with his wlnga nnd beak when he made an occasional visit to tho land? Ono would think they must hnvo been very much in his wny, and that tho animal was an awk ward on tho shore ns ho was graceful In the air. And how did ho start to fly? With such enormous wings, wo think Ornlthostoinn must hnvo dwelt on cliffs about tho sea and launched off them as tho gannets do from Bird Rock. This grant flying reptile lived somo six mll)lonv.yeurs ago; tho sea over which It flew long ngo disap peared, and tho mud Into which Its hones sank becamo chnlk, nnd from tho formntlon of these great chalk beds the time nt which Orolthostoma existed Is called tho Cretaceous Pe riod. .t., Nlchplns. There aro more than 3,000 square miles of weird, mar velous, unimaginable things that can be seen nowhere else, therefore If one ever sees them one must go to the Park, in the heart of the magnicent Rockies with snow tipped peaks all around. If Old FaitWul geyser, a Paint Pot, Mud Volcano, or Emerald Pool were to be found In Lincoln Park, Chicago; Central Park, New York; or Falrmount Park, Philadel phia; the people would flock to see it or them by tens of thousands, For a very small sum, comparatively, all these and hundreds more of nature's nndupllcated marvels can be seen be tween June 1 and September 30 of each year, and ono will enjoy, to boot, the best coaching trip In the country. The Northern Pacific folder on Yel lowstone Park, Just issued, is n new, right up-to-date, finely Illustrated des sertation on this Yellowstone Park trip. It is not descriptive, but deals with the detailed, technical matters everyone needs to know about such a trip. It tells all about tho hotels, tho stage coaches, the roads, the cost of the tour; where the geysers, the waterfalls, the bean, the canyons are, and where the trout fishing Is found.
