That historic expedition consisting cf 45 men (later, at Fort Mandan, re duced to 31 men and 1 Indian woman with hor threo month's old papoose) left St. Louis, ascended tho Missouri river to Its headwaters, crossed tho mountains to the Columbia, and de scended that stream to Hb mouth, and returned, within less than two years and a half. Ono winter they spent in North Dakota, near Bismarck, and an other in Oregon, near Astoria.
