Within what nro Its present boundaries, Nathaniel J.Wyetb in 181 built tho original Fort Hall, an Indian trading post, and on August fi of that year, nt nunrlse, raised the United States flag over his fort and Btoekade. Trior to this tlmo Fort Leavenworth, ont the Missouri river, had been the frontier post of tho United States, and the building of a substantial fort, midway between that place am', the mouth of the Columbia river, was a most Ituportnnt event It signified occupation. All that region was still dcbatnblo ground and this raising of' tho flag had an Im portant Influence In ultimately Ax ing the dividing line between the do- RAISING THE FI.AQ millions of Great Britain and of tho United States In tho Northwest. The winter prior to tho building of Fort Hall, Captain Honnovlllo and bin company of trappers and hunters had camped on tho Portneuf plains, near whoie Pocatello now stands, and hunt ed over a wide oxpauso of territory. Thn bold captain, howover, was In truth only a bon vlvant and voluptuary In a course way and preferred to lord It In the wilderness with n troop of wbl'e nnd red savages nt his IiccIb and a new squaw to wlfo every fortnight, to Hubuilttlug to tho restraints of civ ilian tlon. In Wyetb's party were flvo mission aries, nirong them Jason Leo, later a giant llguro In tho early history of Oregon, nnd just prior to tho comple tion of Fori Hall, ou Sunday, July 27. he preached In the forest adjacent to the fort. This was tho first Chrlstlnn religious service porformed within tho limit' o.' what Is now tho Stato of Idaho. 1 he service seems to hnvo had little practical result at that time, how ever, for the Journals of Its founder describes the dedication of Fort Hull as a day of debauchery, when red men and whlto got gloriously drunk togeth er and closed tho day In drunken brawling. Tbo remains of this old fort aro still to be ee&. They are locally known as "Tho Dcbles." The only piece of Wyetb's work remaining to-day Is a chimney of adobes and, while It plain ly shows the ravages of time, bids fair to rear Its bead for many years yet as a monument to tbo man who plnpted the United States lag In the heart of the continent and oa the Pa cific coast, sad Who, more directly TO CRAWL THROUGH i. - MH.MaMaHMnaHaMHaHamMH Cat a playing card lengthwise In the middle, ss shown In figure 1 of the Illustration. In the meantime tho Indians be came hostile and many outrages com mitted llnnlly led to tho establishment of n military post by tho United States near the site of tho trading post In '1840. This, too. was known as Fort Hall, and Is the slto of tho present Fort Ilnll Indian school. For a time the Indians were easily overawed, but with the outbrenk of the Civil war tho troops were withdrawn from the West nnd during tho flvo years between 1S03 and 1SGS the Shoshones maintained a constant wnrfaro against miners, set- ON OLD FORT HALL. tiers nnd Immigrants. Then tho Ununocks, and tho Ilolso and Ilruncnu Shoshones wero gnthcrcd and all settled at tho snmo reservation. Tho snmo year, by tho treaty of Fort Ilrldger. tho Fort nail reservation was net asldo for tho uso of tho tribes located on It It origi nally consisted of 1,500.000 acres. Some years ago 600,000 acres ou tho south ern part of the reservation wero sold to tho government. In 1800 tho town slto of Pocatello, then practically In the center of the reservation, was sold and now there hnvo been sold -118.000 acres more the southern part again alt of that part from a lino six miles north of Pocatello to tho southern lim its of the reservation. The Indians still retain tho balanco of tho reserva tion. Ait Kx-KIuk'sj Unbending;. Julian ltnlph, author nud war corre spondent, tcllH a story of tho Into King Kalaknun, who on ono occasion held u reception nt tho Windsor Hotel lu New Yoik, He stood In tho parlor with tho aldermunlc committee "doing tho hon ors" as the pcoplo passed by to shako tlm swarthy monarch's baud. All at onco n man reached tbo King's sldo lu his regular turn, shot out of tho line, gripped the King's hand with a hourly grnsp, nnd fnlrly shouted, "Why, Dave, old man. how nro you?" "Why, Hilly," suld the King, "I'm very glnd to seo you!" "Put It there ngnlnl" said tho man. "It's a good many years, Dave, since you nnd I rnu to flrus together In Honolulu, Isn't It'" And tho King shook bis hand again, smiling with do light at meeting a familiar face among such a multitude of strangers. About every so often a woman re members what the books say, nud de cides to call "prldo" to hue rescue. A man seldom realizes how few of Ills remarks are worth repenting until be has conversed with a deaf person. A PLAYING CARD. MONTANA ADVERTISEMENTS.
