The crowd watches tho "warm lug up" of tho Derby horses, sees the starter cross the Held to tho half-mile post, and dually hears the bugle call for saddling. There are tho usual false breaks, tho recalls and the scolding and pleading by the starter with trlckj and overanxious Jockeys for a fall stnrt. Finally there is a swish of the flag and the great crowd takes up the cry, "They're off." The horses come thun dering down the stretch on the first turn past the grand stand, horses and Jockeys seemingly equally Intent to win tho check for $20,000 which the presiding Judge will place In trembling hands within the fractional part of three minutes. Cheered by fraultc cries from CO.OOO throats, each for Its particular favor ite, horses and riders round the quarter-mile post, and from this point tho race Is really won. Classes are now in the hands of eager spectators, who seo only (lashes of color along the back stretch. They swing again Into tho homestretch, and now tho hoofbeats keep time with the heartbeats, as the race Is nearly done. Thcro Is a brief Interval, and then, as the number of the winner goes up on tho Judges' stand a tremendous hurst of npplauso breaks from the crowd. Men swarm out unpn the track, the Immense floral horseshoe Is brought out, and Into It the successful Jockey Is placed, to bo carried In triumph past tho grand stand and Into the paddock to tho Jockey room, to he again cheered by his comrades. The other day she went to a sale of tho description named In aid of a worthy charity in which she Is inter ested, and came away minus a $25 hat It happened this way: A feature of the sale was a counter filled with un trlmmed hats, advertised "Your choice for 50 cents." Now tho North Thirty third street woman didn't really want an uutrlmmed hat at 60 cents, but there was ono that caught her fancy by rea son of Its odd shape, and she simply couldn't resist the temptation to try It on. So she took off tho handsome hat she was wearing, placed It on the coun ter and picked up tho uutrlmmed one. Then she looked around for a mirror. There was only one, aud that was away at the other cud of the long room. She pushed her way through the crowd, and In the meantime a fat colored woman's eyes wero glued to the hat she had left behind, on the pile marked: "Your choice for 50 cents." It was a golden opportunity not to be missed.
