day. Thus to an Inferior or to nn Inti

"Good afternoon!" would ho "Indet
wntu!" or "watch!" meaning, "How
have you spent tho morning?" And
"Good evening!" "Indet mashu," or
"maHheh," I. e., "IIo.w hnvo you spent
the day?"
There Is a similar complete scries of
good-bys for peoplo separating at differ
ent times. Two friends parting In the
evening, say one going home and the
other going to his club (only they
haven't clubs In Abyssinia except
wooden ones, perhaps), would Bay to
each other, "Bndchna ntlar" ("May you
spend tho night well"), which wo might
translate, "Good night; bo good."
The Abyssinian calendar Is a fearful
and wonderful thing. Nearly every
day Is a saint's day and Is known by
Ita proper name and not by Its date.
For Instance, If you nsK an Abyssinian
whether a certain thing happened on
tho 14th of Hndar (tho equivalent of
our Nov. 23) ho will not understand
what you mean; but If you say, "Was It
on Abuut Aragwo (tho name for that
day) that you stole that sheep?" a com
prehending smllo will overspread his
handsome and Intelligent features.
Tho year Is divided Into twelve
months of thirty days each and at the
end of the year, to make up tho 3(55
days, are added Uvo days, called "Quag
me." Each year In succession Is called
Matthews, Markos, Lukos, Johannls.
Matthews, Markos niul Johannls have
each a "Quagme" of live days, but Lu
kos, or lenp year, has a "Quagme" of
six days. Tho Abyssinian year begins
on our Sept 11 and although, dating as
wo do from tho birth of Christ, they nro
nearly eight years behind us In time
Kept 11, 1D00, was In their calendar 1st
Maskaram, 1803. Their method of
reckoning tho hours of tho day Is nlso
peculiar, to our notions. They count
tho dny ns beginning at sunrise and not
at midnight, as wo do. Thus, our 7 n.
in. Is their 1 o'clock dny, nnd our 0 p.
in. their 12 o'clock day; 8 p. in. with us

Tho whole population consists of two-
tlfths soldiers, two-llfths priests nnd
oue-llfth merchants, at least ns far as
tho Abysslulnns tho dominant race
are concerned. All tho other necessary
work 'of tho community Is performed
by subject races, llko the Gnllas or
Somalia, or domestic slaves mostly
prisoners of war captured In the west
ern negro provinces. All Abyssluluus
except tho very poorest employ slnves
for domestic purposes. Theso nro well
cared for and arc regarded after a time
as members of tho family.'
Thcro Is no trade In slaves in Abys
sinia, as they can only bo procured by
tho king's order, which has to be shown
to the governor of the province, who
thereupon gives his sanction. The
sluves, generally boys or girls tho, for
mer for outdoor and the latter for In
door work nro purchased from their
parents at an average prlco of $10 a
heatl, but tho purchaser may never re
sell them, though ho may if ho likes
glvo them nway. The soldiers lead an
easy life nnd havo no work to do except
when called out to serve on nn expedi
tion. It Is true their pay Is only J8 a
year cash Is scarce In Abyssinia but
during peaco time they nre billeted on
tho Gnllas, a subject race, who are
bound to glvo them all they need. In
addition to this munificent rate of pay,
says the London Express, n paternal
government provides the new recruit
at tho outset of his military career
with a donkey free, nut his rifle the
soldier must provide himself, as he
must also maintain his donkey.

poppy. It Is a weird flower. It Is nl

bo to men of science nnd to lovers of
the beautiful, It Is yet more so to tho
people of California. This. beautiful,
weird, gold-colored flower of gossamer
texture belongs to California atone.
Nowhere else In tho world has It ever
made Its habitat. There It Is naturally
so profuso that It Is related ns a fact

of Dnuvcrs, on tho old Goodcnough
farm, Is an old Inn, or tavern, that fifty

travelers between Illoomlngton nnd
Peoria In tho days when tho stage
coach was tho only means of public
travel. It was known as tho "Half
Way House," and Is nbout a mllo and a
half west of Woodruff, toward Lilly.
It Is a large, old-fashioned house, In
qulto good repair, and Is now owned
nnd occupied by Mr. Christ Oesch, for
merly of Roberts, Ford County. Horses
were changed here, and travelers wero
given food. Meals were served for 12'
cents, which was also tho prlco of a
night's lodging.
All travel between Peoria and Illoom
lngton wns by stage, unless ono hnd n
private vehicle of one's own nnd cared
to make bo long a Journey, which was
not a light thing In those days, nor was
It undertaken without duo preparation
and much consideration. This ancient
Inn has stood where It now stands for
