A boon companion In seldom conoid ercd a boon by the family of the man with whom he HHsoclutos. Pew women are Interested In the atudy of prchlHtorlc man. Their spe cialty Is the linn of to-day. It Is wonderful what a bore even a good naturcd denthu can turn himself iiito when his buzzer gets busy. BnntoH-Dumout Is mild to be very mi pcrstltloiiH. I'erhaprt he thinks he was bora to bo run over by an automobile. The mothers' congress was unani mous on ono point, at least, and that Is that mothers uru necessary Institu tion. A Missouri man has decided to stock tils farm with 100 goatu this spring. Hereafter the .MIhsouiI butter Is likely to cut an enlarged figure. A Uusslnn has Invented a monorail road that curries passengers at the rato of 'MO miles nn hour. It Is a good deal like dropping out of the nlrshlp. An ICngllsh professor bays women are Incapable of learning the Chinese lan guage. If he can prove It Chinese may yet become the universal touguo. Tho tienntt) Is anxious to protect Us dignity, and will do all It can to that cud. Hut the .States which select Its membership will have to help some. Hlephuuts are said to bu disappear ing. It Is still possible to see them hi out turgor cities If you don't euro for your wife's restraining Influence. flatting, tlij gun man, has Invented a plow that does the work of sixty horse. Hut whut can the ordinary farmer do with a contrivance of that kind A prominent "educator" In the Bust peaks of High School Latin and Creek as sunctlllod relics." Nover ailnd. Tho boy Is ublo to forget the past quite easily. Turkey Is to be held respouslblo for the kidnaping of Miss Stone. Turkey la already held respouslblo for so many things that one more or less will not miake much dlfforcuce. Wo hope thcru will be uo unseemly quubblo over "murcoulgruui." Tho Idea of calling a wireless telegram by that name sprang up spontaneously In hundred places ut once. The new kind of novel that Is well written, but which begins nowhere ami mis nowhere else, muUes u person mud enough to strike his father. No won der we go buck and road Dickens to get the taste out of our mouths. General Kuno, u Klllpluo millionaire, U reported to havu offered $500,000 each to the American army olllcers who will marry his daughters. Why does the general limit the offer to American soldiers? Let him open It to titled lCuropeuus ami his daughters will go like hot cukes. The Marconi wireless systems are now In use on seventy ships and there are twenty-live laud stations. The Mar coni company now takes several hun dred commercial messages every day for ships that have left port as well mm for those coming In. Tho Ileelug cashier can no longer consider himself aafu wheu out of sight of laud. Lord Krauelu Hope, since coming of age, has spent 1,000,000, and, seeing uo end to the waste, he turned over nil his property uud expectations to a life Inauianco company, which guarantees him uu liu'ome of $10,000 a yeur for life, lu this way he Is ussured ti fair living uud time to medltute on what u chump he has been. Ordinance, statistics now tdiow that It cost $31,000 to extinguish Cervuru'a squadron und $30,000 to blow Mouto Jo's out of water. Other statistics at WaahliiKtou will show that tho type writing expense for the Santiago af fair made the subsequent expense fully ns great as for the ammunition. Hut tho otilelal ilgutvs will fall to record what tho two eri-rtgeineuts coHt In tho way of hearthurulu!,'i, Injured pride and reputations. "I'luk adorned with ambition, baked by onor brlte will always comuud succs even without the uliulty dolar." This la part of au Inscription on a large curd which huii lu a conspicuous place In tho largest wholesale notion house In the United Otntes, It was written by Ghnrlea Ilroadway llouas, tho founder of the business, who was kuowu to tho world as the "blind millionaire." And lu the above Quotation la the secret of Ma anceeu. When be went to Neir York City In 1805 bis entire capita) wai only $1.80. When he died at the age of 00 he was worth millions. "Pluk" and "onor brito" did It. lie worked at least twelve hours every day, six days In the week. lie was always the first at his desk, and the last to leave. To him every minute counted, and be even spelled phonetically In order to save time. Each of his employes was ex pected to work eleven hours a day, and each received his pay at the close of each day's work. When Itouss closed his store at night It was his boast that ho owed no man a dollar. Hut Itouss paid deurly for his millions. He gained wealth nud a place among the mer chant princes of America, but In doing so ho lost his eyesight. Overwork made him blind. He otTcrcd $1,000,000 to any one who could restore his sight Many alleged remedies were brought forth, and ho hired a blind man at a large salary on whom thehe remedies were tried, but none was effective. "I'luk" and "onor brlte" will win suc cess, but If In the pursuit of the al mighty dollar all rules of health are thrown nsldc the millions of a Rocke feller would not be worth lighting for. The man without great wealth, and yet healthy and with his eyesight, Is far more fortunate than the blind million aire. With tho death of "Nell" Hryant there has passed uwuy the Inst of the old-time negro mtstrels. Hy a curious coincidence "Jack" Haverly, "Hilly" West, "Hilly" Emerson, nud "Hilly" Hlce, anil now "Nell" Hrynut, the only prominent representatives left of tho genuine burnt cork "artists," died within a few weeks of each other. With the exception of Haverly and Emerson, they were old men, but they preserved their sense of humor to tho hist. It was a genuine bit of humor, of the snino kind that so moved Thack eray when he llrst heard the negro minstrels In America, when the dying Impersonator Mild: 'Tell all my friends I have gone 'way buck and sat down nnd they will llnd mo on tho end suit." With these men negro minstrelsy also passes. Perhaps It would be more cor rect to say that It passed away before they did. Tho minstrel troupes now on the stage have nothing In common with the old-time performers save their blackened faces. They represent no class and their programs are n hotch potch of absurdly sentimental drivel and eccentric vaudeville specialties. The purpose of the old minstrels, be ginning with tho Christy troupe, tlfty or moru years ngo, was to represent tho plantation negro lu his native hu mor nud with nil his racial peculiari ties. The dances wero the doublo shuf fle, the breakdown, the pigeon wlug, ami the "Jim Crow." The Instruments wero tho banjo, tho fiddle, tho bones, and tho tambourine. Tho songs were tho racy plantation melodies, tho Jubi lee, hymns, and tho melodies of a still higher nud yet characteristic kind, which (lowed so rapidly and so easily from the pen of Stephen C. Foster and wore subsequently transplanted by Dvorak In his new world symphony as specimens of American folk music. In these minstrel performances the com edy of negro life In tho plantation cab ins, lu tho cotton fields, on tho Missis sippi Illvor steuinboats, nud In tho songs ami dances of their recreation time was given with admirable truth ami humor. In the place of all this wo now havo vaudeville nets, "coon" suugs, ragtime, sentimental ballads, uud, In fact, everything except negro minstrelsy. A row of performers with blackened faces slug and act u Hue cession of numbers which have uo more relation to the negro than they have to tho Chinaman. Even the so called "coon" song has nothing of tho Ethiopian tluvnr. The sentimental bal lad, when It was connected with the uegro, as In "Way Down on the Suwu neu Ulver," "01 Susannn," "Old Dan Tucker." "Tho Old Kentucky Home," "Jump Jim Crow," nud others had an element of real humor, at times min gled with pathos, because of n per sonal' motive In It. Tho sentimental ballad of the modern troupes, on tho other hand, Is simply u mixture of sen sational slang and maudlin sentiment. When "Hilly" Kmersou danced nnd gang "Tho Hlg Hunilower" he expressed the happiness of tho darky enjoying his holiday. When n modem minstrel slugs "Tho CJoo-(5oo-I2yes"he expresses mere drivel. Negro mlustrely wns com paratively short lived, but It enjoyed great popularity. Few artists, Indeed, havo been more successful than the four lu black who hnvo recently gone. They wero comedians of n high order of talent. Not Ho Gtt'ono na Her Name. Prof. Syle of the State University of California, who spent tho holidays In Now York, tells this story of himself, At tho beginning of tho last session, whllo calling the roll of his new schol ars, ho o.t me upon tho namo Miss Greene. lie stopped nnd expressed his disapproval of tho tlual e lu her name by asking: "O'Mlouble-e-n-e, does that spell Oreen or greenleV Miss ttreeuo responded promptly; "S.y.l-o, does that spell Syle or sillier Then the roll call proceeded amid suppressed laughter, Now York Times.
