THB NEW AGE. PORTLAND. OREGON. I TOPICS OF THE TIMES. When one Rtopu to think of It, there In n wonder Hint then; nrc not more minstrel pcrformi-rn lynched. Isn't It JiiHt lllso a woman to hnve n mnu nrruHtcn for klKHlng her mid then bo sorry when he In sent to prison? Onrnrglc linn furnished nn epitaph for lihiiNcIf, hut Uussell Sngo probably thinks he In never going to need one. Civilization mny not nlwnyn follow tlio mlsHbiiary, but It geuerully kecpu la hot tnirmilt of the flue-toothed comb. It In clearly the hoiiHehold duty of ninny Cougresnuien to hoc that their corimiH clerk klufolkn get permanently crafted onto tlio govcrutnent plum tree. Queen Wllliclinlna'M physicians hnve decided thnt she must go nwny for a long rest. Perhaps hIic would tlud South Dakota n good place In which to recuperate. If Monte Carlo continues to allow to bo printed the names of the Ameri can magnates who piny there, one of them may get ho ludlgunnt na to buy tlio plnco nnd close It up. A mnn found a dried nnd pressed tnotmo In his plug of chewing tobacco nnd Ih out making u big fuss about It. Tlio very HiuallcHt things hcciu to throw oinc men olT their balance. A man who onco boxed J. Plcrpont Morgan's enrs for "cutting up" lu n church gallery Is still alive. He ought to hnve llttlo trouble In making himself dear to tlio hearts of the Amcrlcuu people. Prof. John I). Qunckcnboss says that all trained nurses should bo hypnotists. We do not want any nurse who Is go ing to stretch our sick form between two chairs and then Jump on our body to nliow how rigid It Is. An advertisement reading something like this Is offered as n suggestion to enterprising hotel-keepers: "This houso Is not fireproof. Kor this reason It Is fully equipped with llro escapes, buck ta, ladders, ropes, stand pipes, hose, grenades, gongs and watchmen." World." And withal, the conception Is within the reason of things. Mr. Blend's book cannot but be of great Interest on both sides of the Atlantic. It will bo greatly appreciated upon this side because from beginning to end the American government, Institu tions and people nrc eloquently lauded. Ills fellow countrymen In England, however, for the most pnrt, will refuse to nccept Mr. Stead's conclusions. Nev crthclcHs, they must bo struck with the great growth nnd expansion of America. And they will probably list en nnd think when Mr. Stead tells them It Is for England to decide wheth er It shall cast Its lot with the re public and becomo an Integral part of the United Stntes of the English-speaking world. All the colonies of Great Itrltaln, says Mr, Stead, arc moro American than English nnd the time will come when they will seek to bo united under tlio aegis of Washing ton's republic. Will England, nsks Mr. Stead, do awny with casto and obso lete forms, part with king nnd aris tocracy, leave the old feudal relics and say as a mother to n daughter: "Tnko me Into your household even ns in your youth you were of my household?" If 'not, wiys Mr. Stend, deendenco Is writ ten nil over the British empire. The dose prepared by this fnr-seeing Eng lishman Is a severe one for his coun trymen to take and they will look at It ft long time before they swallow It. Some day they may shut their eyes and take It. CALL AT THE COULTER GROCERY STORE FOIl FIRST CLABd GOODS Carry Full Line of Staple and Fancy Oroceries. Telephone White 007. EAST SIDE. The noston (Hobo questions whether "tilt Yankee volco Is unmusical." No eno who ever heard a good old New England grandmother stand In the doorway and suy, "Now, children, you touio right In to your victuals," could ejuoatlou the music lu that voice for an Instant A citizen of Frankfort, Germany, has bequeathed to that city the sum of live hundred thousand marks, the Interest pon It to bo used In researches respect-1 tug the causo of enncer. it Is probuble that more work In laboratories and else where baa thnt purposo In vtow than at any previous time. Tho triumphs if the quiet laboratory nro In contrast with the victories of the thunderous battle-Held, but who shall sny that tho conqueror of pitiless disease Is not worthy to bo ranked with the world's greatest generals? It would be Interesting to know Just how tho Indians compare In number now with what they were In tho tlmo f Columbus. Olio recent writer says that by 1050 the American Indian will bo extinct. Still another writer as sorts In reply that thu best authorities bellovo there are quite ns many In dians now as thero were four hundred years ago. Even though tho latter writer may bo wrong, It dues not seem as If tlio tint could bo wholly right, for tho Indian Is evidently not the race thnt can bo wiped out of oxlateuco lu that length of time. Tho proposed Isthmian canal, which ever route Is selected, will have far reaching effects upon ocean transpor tation. The size of Its locks will prob ably set a limit to tho displacement of tlio freight steamships of the world, for few owners would want vessels too large to go through so Important an artery of trutllc. If the Panama route Is chosen It will do something to hast en the decline of sailing vessels by comparison with steamships, because f tho roglou of calms on the west Ide of Panama, which would put at a great disadvantage ti boat dependent on tho winds. Cassias wanted to know "upon what meat doth this our Cnevnr feed that b'J Is grown so great." Some autlquarluu Las been making au Investigation Into the diet of the New England Caesars, Including Governor Wlnslow, Daniel Webster and others, lie tluds that they or their ancestors breakfasted on hasty pudding, pea soup flavored with pork, squash, turnips and onions; dined ou the tame with rye pudding, brown bread ami tu occasional fowl, and upped ou fresh tlsh with vegetables. Hut Casslus did uot really think that greatness had Its root lu meat nnd drink, for ho said, "Tho fault, dear Brutus, Is lu ourselves, that we are underlings," after declaring thnt "men at some tlmo are masters of their fates." lie was right. It was not pea soup and rye bread In the East that made Webster; nor was It salt pork hi tho West that raised Lincoln tiutll he overtopped till others lu his generation, The warning note ngulnst the possi ble dlsnstrous results of tho present tendency of girls to become money earners lu the commercial and Indus trial world which was sounded by Prof. D. L. IClculo before the superintend ents of tho National Educational Asso ciation was but an echo of an alarum that tins become general and wide spread. Ills utterances upon this sub ject, being obviously based upon con ditions thut arc everywhere apparent even to superficial observers, provoked no challenge ou tho pnrt of tho educa tors who listened to them. Ills obser vations lu fact met with general as sent. Prof. Klchlo called attention to the fact thnt In this age of commercial ism and Industrial activity no provis ion hns been ma do for motherhood. This phase of life hns apparently been brushed aside. The desire for gain Is crowding out all consideration of the home us nn Institution that should be maintained according to tho highest standards of comfort. Girls are seek ing tho higher education In order to become a part of tho commercial ma chinery of tho ngc, nnd not to utilize the kuowlcdgo gnlned for tho chemistry of tho kitchen or for perfecting the ap pointments of tho modern home. Sold Prof. Klchlo: "Training along Indus trial lines Is not the goul for women. Until wealth brings Its treasure from tho shop and bank to tho home In forma of use for the comfort of the family, until art learns to beautify tho dwell ing pluco of the family life as well as the cathcdrul nnd tho capltol, and until sclonfe devoUs It sell, to the healthful roaring of children and the hyglcno of tho home, nil these forces of our mod ern civilization of which wo are so proud fall short of their highest ser vice. Tills final and noblest applica tion of wenlth nnd learning must bo effected In the education of women." Tho truth of these observations will be generally conceded by all who take note of present tendencies. Thero Is little doubt thnt tho tendency of young women to cuter tho otllce nnd factory Is it menace to home life, thnt It ultimate ly tends to subordinate the home us an Institution to commercialism, nut how can Prof. Klehle and his co-laborores lu tho universities check this tendency? It may be partially checked no doubt by the schools and universities through giving the household arts aild other studies that pertain to the homo a moro Important place In their schctno of education. Hut after tho young women are educated to become wives nnd mothers who Is to provide them with opportunity for utilizing this ed ucation? Who ts to provldo homes for all the educated homemakers? In oth er words, Is not the nveruge young woman of to-day confronted by u con dition rather than n theory? Thousands of girls lu this country are uot permit ted to await the opportunity to become homemakers. They are forced by grim necessity Into commercial, Industrial trial nnd professional pursuits, and however much wo may deplore the con dltlou that seems to compel them to be come self-supporting there appears to bo no adequate remedy for It at pres cut visible within the ran go of the schoolmaster.
