ELEVATOR EYE A NEW DISEASE. Pacall-r Malady that Affects Cond-ct-era f Lift, in Hlh Baildlart. The "elevator eyo" Is a new dlseaso that has already claimed several vic tims in Chicago. Only thoso who ope rato lifts In high buildings are subject to It. Half a dozen cases are now be ing treated by eye specialists, who for want of a better' name, call the now malady "elevator eye." Sooner or later the eyes of an eleva tor conductor become affected. He Is constantly looking out of his cage, so ns to catch sight of passengers on tho dif ferent floors, and the strain on the eyes begins to tell In time. lie may go for a year or longer without being visibly affected, but In tho long run tho "eleva tor eye" Is bound to get him. Men who operato machines In buildings of Ave or six stories In height have llttlo or no fear of being affected, because there Isn't much strain on tho conductor's eyes In thoso structures. It Is In the twclvo or fifteen story sky-scraper that' tho "elevator eye" Is contagious. Tho conductor starts from tho bottom and goes to tho top with his load of human freight at a speed that takes away the breath of some of the passengers. As; the cage shoots upward orders arc giv en to stop at this or that floor, and the operator must keep a pretty close watch else ho will run past the stop ping point. It la tho same thing on tho downward trip. Ho must keep his eye glued to the bottom of the cage In order to catch the first glimpse of waiting passengers. This constant strain on the optic nerves causes the elovator conductor to bo mo mentarily blind at times. Ho rubs his eyes and tries to fight tho disease, but It gets htm In tho end If be sticks long enough to tho elevator. A peculiar featuro of tho "elovator oyo" In Its worst stago Ib that one eyo looks down whllo tho other gazes up ward. Specialists who have success fully treated tho new malady recom mend rest abovo all other remedies. In somo coses tho eyes havo to be straight ened. Once mulcted a person can novcr bo permanently cured, tho specialists say, unless tho victim quits the elova tor. Chicago Inter Ocean. DON JERMAN RIESOO. The Newly Klectel President of the Kepnbllc of Chile. Don Jcrman Illcsco, who has been elected President, of Chile, Is what Is called In that country "a modcrato lib eral." It Is difficult to explain what the term means unless one Is a resident of Chllcnnd has knowledgo of party poli tics In Latin America. Scnor Illcsco nt tho polls waB supported by a majority of the radicals and llborals and by part of tho conservative party. Ho Is a rel- HON JKIIMAN ItlKSOO. atlvo of tho retiring Presldeut, Henor Errazurlz, and wns opposed In his cati dldacy by Don Pedro Moutt, who had tho support of tho clericals. To a large extent the church and Its attitude makes and unmakes political parties In tho Latln-Amcrlcnn States. The gen eral disposition of the priesthood to Interfere with State affairs has given tho party of Presldeut Itlesco consider able prestige among thoso opposed to the union of church and state. Thought Himself Sponge. Ho arrived In Mllwaukeo yesterday, a tall, angular specimen of tiie inhab itants of tho farms of northern Wis couslu. Travel-stained and wcury, he dropped Into a Grand uveiiuo barber shop and bath houso for a real city shnve. While indulging In this luxury the barber painted In such glowing col ors the woudcrs of their bath estab lishment that the rural visitor finally decided to go In for It If It liroko him. Attaching himself to an attendant he was meekly led Into a wonderful room of tiled floors and wall, white enatncltd bath tubs, and all tho modern Improve ments of plumbing.. While the luxurlousncss of It all over came him for a while, his curiosity finally got the better of him and lit proceeded to Investigate. At the bend of the tub was one of thoso patent cylindrical waste pipe regulators thai empty -the tub by pulling up. Aftei giving this a slight pull he Bottled drearily back Into the soothing water noticing that the water was slowly di minishing. This In no way disturbed him, and In about an hour the attend ant appeared, inquiring If lie had Iinf enough. "I guess I have," said he. "I've souk. ed up about six Inches of your go! darned water, nnd I reckon that's about do for me." Milwaukee Sentinel. Not All Alike. Mrs. Crimsonbeak It seems strange to me, If matches are mado In ilea yen, that thero should be so many unhappy marriages. Mr. Crimsonbeak Oh, you forget; It is tho matches that aro made there not the mlsflts. There is something the matter with tho women; also, something the matter with the men. 1 P. F. HALL. Cor.
