HOME OF GREAT FINANCIER. Little Vlllnce 1 onsta Three Names nnil Keitdeitce or J. IN .Morgan. Just to tlio south of West Polut thero Is n little vlllngo on tlio Hudson that glories in three names. It iins hud two nnmes for years, but the third la a recent ntul cuufuslng addition. By its residents it is called Highland Falls. This uruxic Is derived from that hand some catnrnet sometimes called "But termilk Kalis." which comes tumbling down through the mouutnlns to uinke a llnnl leap over a huge rock Into tho Hudson. The north of tho fulls is a great cliff. It was on this ell It n num ber of years ago, says th6 New York Times, that a hotel was built by a man named Cranston. The vljlngo of High land Fnlls lies back of this, cliff, uud veiy little of It is discernible from the river. As Cranston owned the nroD- erty to the river's edge, the West Shoro Uailioatl Company was obliged to se cure land for Its stntlou from htm. He also owned tho dock where the steam boats tie up. So both the railroad station uud the dock becamo known as Cranston's, although there was of CraUBton's only the hotel, whllo the village of Highland Kalis numbers sev eral thousand people. For years Cranston's Hotel was a fashionable resort. Fashion left It nud It was closed. Recently tho bulldug, grounds nud dock wero purchased by tho Franciscan Sisters who have turn ed it luto n seminary for. young indies. When this was In readiness for schol ars the sisters decided to call It Lady cllffo Academy, nud they accordingly changed the name of the dock to "Lady cllffo." And so It happens that If you want to go to tho village of Highland Falls by boat you get a ticket for "Ladycllffc," and If you go by train your ticket reads to Cranston's. This little vlllngo with the surplusage of names Is the homo of J. Plcrpont Morgan, the world's grentost comblnor. 1'crhapi some day ho may be Induced to syndicate Cranston's, Highland Falls and Lndycllffo under n now mimo. COUNTESS TOLSTOI. Wife of the Noted Ku.alnn Reformer mid Uer Mure Dovntlon, Countess Sophia Androronn Tolstoi, wife of the great Uussluu reformer and author, U a meek, mild vyoman, whoso cntlro life lias been spent, since her marriage, in ministering to the wants of her husband, and In rearing her nu merous offspring. Tho Tolstois haro had three child) en, and for these until they wero 10 years old the Countess has made all the wearing apparel, Sho acts as secretary and critic to the Count and chiefly conecrna herself with the table (.OIJNTKS T.II.H1III. desires of her lord and master. Count ess Tolstoi is one of tlio most cultured romen in all Europe. Wlrcn sho was 17 alio received a diploma from the University of Moscow. One year later sho married the Count after a romantic courtship, which has been reproduced word for word In that of Lovln and Kitty In "Anna Karenlna." Among her manifold duties Is that of looking after her husband's copyrights and roy alties, and It Is said not a penny cucapus her. In describing tup Countess devo tion to him the famous sociologist says: "If I wero a clarinet my wlfo would spend all her time polishing and burn ishing the keys." Cheek for Four Out. It Is not often that a business man gets a check for money that he would rather be without, hut that Is what happened to a wholesale lumber dealer of this cfty tho other day, says tho New York Sun. The check was sent to hlrn by the re ceiver of u defunct Boston nnrdwaro concern, and he was entitled to tho money as a creditor. Made out on a Boston bank It called for tho payment of 4 cents as the ilrst "and llnnl" divi dend. After recovering from his surptiso the recipient sat down to reckon It all out. Thero was tho 2-cent revenue stamp and n 2-ccut postage stamp on the letter. That meant -1 cents to send It to him, not counting the cost of paper and eavelopo and printed form of ac knowledgment To acknowledge its receipt and cash the check would In volve an outlay of about VI cents more, ns banks charge for out-of-town collections, lit was still thinking It over when a friend entered the olllco and offered twice tho face value of the check to secure It us a curio. He sold It In a hurry. Nobleaae Oblige. Mrs. Newrooka And I'm so subject to seasickness! Still, we must have a yacht Mr. NewrocksWell, why must we7 Mrs. Newroeks Because we haro the money. Puck.
