THE N1SW AGKE, PORTLAND, OREGON. THE POWER OF LOVE. Am far ai are the hearcns from the earth la your own world from mine; The world which you adorn by right of birth. By right of beauty, womanhood and worth, In which your talcuts shine J Wherein you nobly won what you're ac quired, And now, as ne'er before, iAre loved by young and old, sought for, admired, Welcomed at every door. And yet you tell me that you did not know The love that fills my heart JThe love for you I ever strive to snow From my own puny world so far below From yours so far apnrt; That were It not for this you could not be To others what you arc; That you are so from what you are to me; From my true love and care. Buch Is the power of love, that like the rays Of Bummer's colden sun Illumines our two worlds through all the days. And though our lives may follow parted ways, Still keeps our hearts as one. One heart In duty, sacrifice and love, One heart In truth and right, Till In the happiness that lies above Our two worlds shall unite. Boston Transcrlnt. 2 Saved by Her Voice. L......................: DT was sprlngtlmo nnd noonday In England, and the soft breath of the year seemed laden wltli fragrant promises of bloom and color, wlillo over tho woods was stealing a falryllko man tie of green. On such n day, and In such n scene as this, KvniiRclIno Itohan felt as though the world should hold nothing of strife or palu or ugliness; Indeed, tho particu lar world In which slio moved nnd breathed and had her being held llttlo but tho surface knowledge that such things existed, for fate bad favored Kvangcllno, nnd not content with be stowing on her beauty of person nnd mind, had dowered her with tho great gift of song In Its dlvlno perfection. Now she snuutered down tho wind ing pathway that led from her castlu terrnco to a copse beneath. A man followed her with hesitating steps, as though ho fen red a rcpulso If he presented himself too suddenly, took courage to approach when the trees veiled them from tho castle windows,' and, though she made him welcome by neither word nor sign, wnlked at her side until the whim seized her to Beat faerself on a bank and search for tho desultory Dowers thnt were beginning to peep here and there, i It was nt this moment that a visitor who had driven up to the castle In a dogcart descended uud asked for Mile, itohan. "I am afraid sho Is unable to sco any ne this morning," said tho butler; "sho la resting for to-night. Dr. Ilurrowdcu knit his brows In per plexity. He remembered that tho sing er had generously offered to throw open tier castlo to the public on that night and to give tliu tlrst eiitertalument In tier new thenter for tho beueflt of a fund for wounded soldiers. All the country were clamoring for tickets. Fabulous prices had beeu paid even for standing room, and report said tho diva, ha vlug, spared no pnlns nor ex pense to mako the occasion a success, was about to eclipse herself lu a new part, specially written and composed for her, lu an operatic adaptation of 'Othello." "Tho matter Is n very urgent one," aid Dr. Harrowdeu, after a pause. "I Lave a request to mako of Mile, Itohan that can only be made personally. If you will risk her displeasure and allow uio to make my way to her I will tako all tho bliune. I may say It Is a ques tion almost of life ami death," The man, who knew Dr. Harrowdeu a one whose reputation', even lu a vil lage practice, gave weight to his words, yielded, and, telling him that mado tuolsello had taken the path toward tho copse, led him through tho conserva tory and directed him to tho shortest way. Ho came so suddenly upon tho llttlo clearing where Kvaugellue was that neither she nor her compaulou per ceived him. Hho was standing up, a singular look on her beautiful face, which was bereft of Its usual color, and both her hands were outstretched be fore her as though to ward off some thing thnt sho dreaded, aud that yet fascinated her. His face, a dark-eyed, brown-skinned one, with something lu its southern In tensity that marred Its handsomeness, tuuHt have worn a threatening expres sion, for she recoiled with a little cry of alarm, and, turnlug, saw Dr. Har rowdeu as ho stepped toward her. "Ah, doctor!" sho said, u llttlo shaken still, but smiling, "It Is a long time since I have seen you, which speaks well for my health, though uot for my hospi tality. Hut you are coming to-night, I hope!" 'You have naked me to tho castle most kindly," bo answered quietly, "but I am a busy man, as you know, made moiselle, aud have to deny myself many pleasures. 1 have ventured to Intrude on you, for which you must please lay the blame solely on me, because 1 have s little patient down there In the vil lage whose recovery seems to depend eutlrely on you." "Ou mel" "My patient Is a little child who has been at death's door through fever, and whose one desire, night and day, has beeu to hear you sing. We thought It a delirious fancy that would pass, but It ettM that had she been well, she ti STYLISH GOWNS F06 Country-house toilet of gray etamlne. She raves and weeps alternate ly and will not sleep, bcgftlng nlways to be taken to you so that she, might ask you to sing one little Bong to her." "Where Is sho? Take me to her, doc tor, and I will sing to her nt once." Hnlf an hour Inter, with nil her soul In her cxqulslto voice, sho was stand ing In tho cottngo singing n song of life nnd lovo to the bewildered vlllngcrs, wlillo the sick child, propped "l by I'11 lows to henr tho desire of her heart, cried out that It was nn angel who had come In answer to her prayers. It was midnight, twclvo hours slnco Kvn had chnrmed away tho shndow of death from tho village home, nnd sho was holding a grent assembly hushed and spellbound, wlillo her voice, no longer softened nnd subdued, rang with nil Its glorious power through the largo opera hall which sho had lately added to her castlo. It was tho moment of her crowning triumph, the moment when Dcsdctuoua, realizing to tho full her danger, and tho Inllnxlblo purpose of Othello, trans formed by Jealousy Into a murderer, censed to plead for her life, and In stead, proudly and passionately de clared her Innocence Count Devns, the Italian singer, who had already won universal applause for his wonderful rendering of Othello, faced her, the madness of rngo that was consuming him portrayed vividly lu every feature of his face, lu every movement of his tense, nervous lingers. There wns silence, Inteuse, dead si lence for nu lustaut ns Eva's last noto died away and then, as sho covered her eyes with her bauds, tho Count, with one swift step, wua at her side, press ing with ruthless hands the amnion on her upturned face, and tho curtain bo gnu slowly to desccud on tho death scene. An electric thrill ran through tho audience, the horror nnd despair of tho trauedy before them seemed suddenly real and tangible; the scream, strangled lu Its birth, thnt came from the beauti ful singer seemed an appeal to them for help; aud then an amazing thing oc curred. In tho excitement of the sceno no ono had noticed tho sudden arrival lu the hnll of Dr. Harrowdeu, who, pale and breathless, stood watching the descent of the curtain, until, apparently over powered by Impulse, he ran up-the hall, leaped up to the stage, anil, sprluglng across the footlights, threw himself upon the Count. In the desperate strugglo thnt ensued, momentary as It was, before tho para lyzed onlookers rushed to separate tho combatants, no ono noticed that Kvn herself had not moved, and lay still under tho cushions. There was the (lash of a knife, nu ex clamation from Dr. Harrowdeu, and then, as he dropped, stabbed lu tho shoulder, a dozen bauds were on tho Couut, and, though ho fought with the limitless strength of n uuulmnu, he wns overpowered at last by numbers, nnd carried off the stage, bound and help less. Dr. Harrowdeu, whoso falutness wns only temporary, luid risen already, and, disregarding tho help offered him, hur ried to the couch aud raised tho cush ions. Kvn lay thero Insensible, with the marks ou her white neck where the Count's lingers had gone near to suffo cating her. Dr. Harrowdeu bent and laid his ear to her lips aud heart. "She Is uot dead," he said briefly. "Carry her to her room. I will attend to her." Wondering exclamations broke out on nil sides. What had happened? Had tho Couut really attempted Kva's life? How had the doctor beeu aware of her danger? Aud n thousand other ques tions. and surmises. Later, when Kvn, very weak and 111, had recovered con sciousness, she told .the story of tho Count's strange, wild love for her, an Infatuation which had seized him when they nrst met lu the Opera House nt Milan, of her Inability to shake off tho lutlueuce which he exercised over her, lu spite of her dread fud dlallko.of him, of bis appeurauce nt the castle when she was arranging the cast of "Othel lo," aud imperious demand to be allow ed to remain there aud to play the title role. ' sho said to Dr. Harrowden. when, nftet many day of suffering from the Count's stiletto wound, he came, nt her re quest, to see her. "It was a miracle that you should havo saved me as you did. A moment longer, nnd It would havo been too Intc. How did you guesi that his acting was reality?" "Tho thanks nre duo renly to your self," he said gently. "Your klndncsi In singing to thnt poor little child win tho cnuso of your preservation. I went to see her that evening nnd found her just awakened from a strange dream of you, which had left the Impression on her mind thnt you were In danger. 'Tho beautiful lady with tho angel vblce,' she cnlled you. Sho would not bo comforted until I promised to go up to the castle and assure myself thnt no harm threatened you. Her persistence gavo me n touch of nnxlety, nnd II came to mo with n sort of tuition, ns 1 watched the Count, thnt ho was mnd. I felt sure he meant mischief.
