There lind been a feud for yearn be

which the Earps were the lenders, unil
the cattle rustlers, of whom Boyett
was one. One day Harp walked Into
a saloon where Boyett was drinking
with some of his cattle-rustling friends.
"ThcreV my gun. cur!" yelled Enrp,
tossing lilft Colt I." Into thu air and
deftly catching It again; "where's
yours?"
"Ain't got It," was Boyotfs reply.

When Boyett returned a few minutes
later he began shooting at ouce ami
scattered thu loungers. Earp stood
his ground, and said:
"You've got all tho best o' me. Some
feller took my gun."
"Stnud still, then," cried Boyett, for
Earp wns steadily advancing, with
blood lu Ids eye, for a quick grapple
and possession of the gun.
"Oh, !" remarked Earp, as lie
sprang forward. Boyctt's weapon
cracked, and the third of the Earps to
die fell, shot through tho heart.

When the Earp brothers lived lu
Tombstone they did much toward mak
ing It a thrilling place, of residence, for
the four brothers weft! much In evi
dence thereabouts lu the early '80's. In
1SS:I, however, the community decided
It liad had enough of the quartet, and
n solid front miido up of six-shooters
and Winchesters was presented to
them. So they left Tombstone and mi
grated to (iiiimisoii County. Finally
they wero run out of (iiiimisoii, and
Wyutt Earp migrated to California,
while Warren clung to his native heath
In Arizona.
They had n sister. .Jessie, who lived
witli them lu Tombstone. Shu was
known as the virtuous one of the fam
ily, Virgil as tlie oldest, Wyatt as the
wisest, .Julian as the bravest, ami
Warren as the most foolhardy. Virgil
was killed lu Touihitoiiu ami Julian In
litinuisun.
All of the Earps were gun lighters for
the love of It ami men of prompt cour
age and hitter revenge. Eaeli of them
killed numerous men. Wyatt Is cred
ited with ten and Warren with fully
as many. It used to lie said lu tho
Cochise country, round about 'J'outli
btone, that any of the Earps was tit to
"pull and center" u shot lu less than
one-tenth of a second.
In the early 'no's, when Virgil and
Wyatt Earp led the stage robbers of
Tombstone, "Ike" Clautou, Johnny Be
han ami Jack Itlugo led the cattle rust
lers. The Earps killed men for recreit
tloti ami rnhlH-d stages for a livelihood,
for there was no money lu murder.
The rustlers got their amusement in
much the same way, hut they devoted
more time to whisky uud the faro
bank.
Political office, too, had its charms j
for both factions, for, while Johnny
Behan was the Democratic sheriff of
Cochise County, Virgil Enrp was tho
Republican marshal of Tombstone.
And each side treated thu other to
many u murder.
Virgil Earp had a partnership with

Wells-Fargo express ngent nt Tomb
stone. Williams would "tip olt" the
stages that lie knew would hold the big
motley, and then Earp would plant his
highwaymen In u convenient place and
plunder the stage.

Warren Earp was an express stage
company guard, and when his brother
gnve the command, "Hands up!" It was
wonderful to see with what meekness
tho llcrce-looklng young guard threw
up his hands. Then his brothers went
through the express packages. There
was never any shooting, for it was u.
family affair.

spent with n freedom that was consid
ered royal In Tombstone. After each
crime they organized themselves Into a
posse comltatus and received more
money as a bonus for chasing them
selves. In each case Virgil, the innr

nud the notorious "Curly Bill" Earp,
their cousin.
On one gala occasion In Birdcage
Opera House of Tombstone, tho two
warring factions occupied the boxes on
opposite sides of the house. When one
side cheered or clapped hands, the
other hissed. Sheriff Behnn, "Ike"
Ulautou and ".lack" Bingo, with sev
eral followers, vied with the Earp
brothers, "Curly Bill" and "Doc" Holll
lay. Whisky flowed like water, and
excitement was at blood heat, when
suddenly Clautou took exception to tho
bootof onodf the Earps' followers, which
reposed oti the rail In front of the box.
"Ike" promptly p,:t a bullet through thu
offending member, and then there wns
bloody war. Twelve men were killed
or wounded, but none of thu Earps
was even scratched.
Williams, the Wells-Kargo traitor,
was seriously wotmded In half a dozen
place and, fully expecting to die, hu
worked up a little tleath-bed repent
a nee nnd told how thu Earps had been
plundering stages ami express pack
ages for years.
Tills caused the Earps to fortify
themselves In a small adobe hut on tho
outskirts of the town, where they were
promptly besieged by SherllT Behau
and his followers. Warren liked gam
bling, ami 'after the siege had begun
to bu tedious, he decided he wauled to
visit thu faro bank. So he did, ami
was shot, it was thought at the time
that the wound would prove fatal, ami
Virgil at ouce set out to avenge Ids
brother's Injuries. A crowd of ten
opened tire uujdiu the moment they
saw him, and h" was Instantly killed.

Then the remaining Earps repaired
to Gunnison and took their sister Jes
sie with them. "Ike" Clautou fob
owed and eloped with the sister, This
was too much for the bereaved Harps,
and they set out on the trail of the
bridal couple. They ran the pair Into a

on fair play. So It was decided that
Julian Earp was to tight a due! wlh
Clautou, each lold a six-shooter in I lie
other's face and shooting It out. Julian
was killed.
Two years of comparatively peaceful
married life followed for ,lcBe and
Clautou, but one day Wyatt and War
ren ami "Curly Bill" met the happy
husband, and a shower of bullets was
the result. Clautou and "Curly Bill"
went down together, ami Warren and
Wyatt thought best to get out of sight.
So they separated, and thu elder netit
to California, while the younger and
"most foolhardy" remained In Arizona.
Wyatt was "plugged full of lead," to
use his owu words. Before they left,
however, they killed the two Meiov.
