It U an endless vil lage of coopg and sheds, painted white and filled with an aggregation of about DOO white Leghorns and cotton-ball games, several hundred of which Mrs. Davis has raised this season. She Is nn authority on chicken raising, nnd the couutry folks for miles around look to her for Informal Ion on the subject. Another Important adjunct to the farm Is a herd of Jerseys, comprising fifty cows and heifers and two finely bred bulls. Mrs. Dnvls owns also 100 head of Poland China nnd Victoria swine, nnd a kennel of dogs. The outhouses of the Dnvls farm nro tho fluent In the State of Indiana. Salmon hide, for example, serves so well In this way that tho Esquimau of Alaska make waterproof shirts nnd boots out of It. They also cut Jackets out of codfish skins, which are said to bo very ser vlccablo garments. In the United States frog skins nro coming Into use for tho mounting of books, where nn exceptionally delicate material for lino binding Is required. Thero nro certain tribes of savages who make breast plates out of gurllsh hklns, which will turn a knife or a spenr. A bullet will pierce this breastplate, .but It Is said lo be Impossible to chop through the material with n hatchet nt ono blow. Together with such n breastplate, these savages wear u helmet of the skin of the porcupine fish, which Is covered with formidable spines. This leather Is obtained from the hair seal, and sot; from the fur bearing species, and Is used to a considerable extent In tb manufacture of pocketbooks. Walrus leather has cotno Into the mar ket recently, but as the animals aro being exterminated rapidly It will hardly amount to much commercially. Another kind of leather now seen on Jialo Is that of the sea elephant. Up to within a few years a species of sea elephant was found on the Pacific coast rautrlnir as far north as Lower California, but the'aplmals have beeu so nearly exterminated mat tuey nro now rnrely seen.
