Home of Great Men Church Dedicated with WhUkj-l'lotiecr Kcttlcns Buf fered HardalilpH, urn! Klrat White Child Horn Died ot Bturvattou. That scctlou of tho country known In early days as "the Western reserve" In Ohio recently .celebrated Its centennial. One hundred years ngo the tlrst white child born In the Western reserve died of starvation. The first church lu the section was dedicated by the breaking of a bottle ot whisky over Its steeple. Among the prominent men horn nud raised In that part of Ohio were James A. Garileld, William MclCluley, Will- MORMON TKlll'I.lt, KIHKI.A.M). lam Dean IIowclls, Ulddlugs, and Wade. Hundreds of people each year visit tho old law offices of (lidding & Wade, tho famous statesmen of anti-slavery times, located at Jefferson, Ashtstbula County. Their monuments In tho little Jefferson cemetery are also a point of Interest. Scattered here and there throughout tho reserve arc the old un derground rnllroad stations which shel tered many a slave on his way to lib erty. The birthplace of McKlntey Is located at Nlles and the homo of James A. Garfield at Mentor. William Dean IIowclls sot type In a printing olllco at Jefferson which Is still standing, and tho same paper Is Issued wrekly. Edith Thomas, the poetess of nature, often went down beside the brook at Geneva and wroto poetry beneath tho canopy of au umbrella as she watched tho tor- LOU SCHOOL IN WHICH I'LATT K. rents of rain a nil tho flashes of light ning, lu tho woods near the lake, Piatt It. Spencer, tho author of Spcnccrlan penmanship, taught hundreds of pupil the system of penmanship which has become famous since then. Tho monument to Commodore I'er ry's splendid victory stands lu Wade Park, Cleveland. At Klrtland Is tho tlrst Mormon temple ever erected. At Ashtabula Is located tho church where Robert G, Ingersoll attended Sunday school. These are a few of tho poluts of Interest to be seen In tho territory which Is now celebrating tho dato of Its foundlug. That tho tlrst white child born on the Western rescrvo should dlo for want ot food shows tho hardships which the first sottlers endured. The first family to winter on the Western reserve con sisted of Judge Kingsbury and wife and children. They located at Con neaut, which Is situated near the banks of Lake Erie. Provisions were very scarce, and It Is said thaU more than onco the Judge transported through the wilderness on a baud sled a barrel of beef a dlstanco of sixty miles. The severest test of the family came when Judge Kingsbury was compelled by his business Interests to go to New York la the fall of the first year of their set tlement at Conueaut. Tho Journey was a long one In those days, when all who wished to travel must rldo horseback or ro ou foot. Arriving In New York he was taken sick and for several months was unable to return to his family; As- soou as he could travel he started at once, and fearing that hU wife andi little, ones would have used up the supply of provisions In his ab sence he gathered together all he could carry, and when his horse guve out, a hundred miles from home, he placed tho load uppu his own back and contin ued his trip. On reaching the house he bounded Inside with his precious load of provisions. During his absence another child hail been born and upon a cot lay the mother, nearly famished, and beside her (he babe was dead. It had died for lack of nourishment, which tho starving mother was unable to furnish. This Is one of the saddest stories In connection with the settle ment of tho section. The first church on tho Western re servo Is said to have been located at Austlnburg. It Is said that when tho church was dedicated there was brokeu over Its steeple a bottle of whisky. This was In the days when even preachers drank whisky, and nothing was thought J " " s I ,J - ' - l n1 . i fc-. . '"'fci f usskuwiv '-jgjjjf SwtSiiSxa7?- -asj '' - qf It. Thin church was afterward on of tho strongest opponents ol ths liquor trnfllc, ami among its members wcro numbered somo of tho most noted tem perance workers of Inter years. ' It was during the very early days of tho Western reserve that what was thb tlrst and probably the only 'trip ever made across Luke Erie In a canoe was mnde by Solomon Sweatlaud. The dis tance across is more than sixty miles, nud to attempt such u voyage Is llko rushing headlong to death. There Is probably not a sailor living to-dny who would nttempt It. Solomon Swenttaud safely mnde the Journey, soon after ho landed lu this territory as one of Its eurly Bettlers. He, with several other enthusiastic young hunters, were out after deer. One of these nulmnls, an extra large one, ran to the bank of the lake and Jumping lu Bvn.in fnr out Into Its bluo waters. Sweatlnud followed In a canoe. Ho was caught lu a galo of wind ami found tt'lmposslble to re turn to shore. All that day and ulgbt he drifted about helplessly, balling tho water from his canoe at Intervals and holding on. 'In tho morning ho sighted tho Canadian shore and lauded safely, and a fow months later returned home, ,where-.hls relatives had mourned him as dead. One of the, first pioneers on the re serve wna Alexander Harper, who, with his wife and seven children, ar rived at a point near Unlonvlllo June 28. Hero within thrco months' time be died. There being no coffins available, he was burled lu ono hewn from the trunk of a tree. The family fought hard against great privations and hard ships and were successful pioneers. To day tho Harper residence stands as one of the landmarks of the reserve. It contains the rarest of relics. Later In the Western reserve's his tory we find John llrown picking many of his men from the Western reserve. Queer Thin llnnrd In the KITtnrsj "A funny thing about this buslncsn," said a man who runs the elevator In a big olllco , building, "Is tho way people will sometimes call out whatever hap pens to bo on their minds Instead of the number of the floor nt which' they want to stop. Just a few moments ago u very good-looking lady got lu the car, and, when we were about half way up she called out suddenly: 'Two back teeth!' 'What!' said I, a little startled. 'I mean five,' she answered, turning ml. Then she saw that made It worse than ever, and she turned red some Sl'KNOEIt TAUGHT PENMANSHU'. more. 'I menu please stop at tho llftli floor,' she mauaged to say, very low, when we were nearly to tho top. You see, she was on her way to the deutlsts, may be to hno two buck teeth snatched out, and I suppose she could not think of anything else. Tho other day a fat, fussy old man rushrd In with a bundle of papers In his hand. When wo got near tho fourth tloor ho blurted out: 'He's a contemptible- rascal I' 'Very likely,' said I, and kept ou going up. 'HI, there!' ho yolled, 'why didn't you stop where I told youV 'How did I know what floor you meant?' said I. 'What you remarked fits tenants ou sev eral -floors.' It turned out that ho want ed to sco his lawyer. I don't know whether he was thinking about him or somebody he was In litigation with." Now Orleans Times-Democrat. Stamp t Drawn by Wind Power. Utilizing the wind as a stump puller Is au Oregon Invention, It was the Idea of tho farmer at the State peniten tiary, whoso task was to clear six acres, aud with tho aid of tho wind ho cleared the whole tract In six weeks, although the timber was a deuso growth,, tho tlrst measuring from one to four feet In diameter. The winds lu the quarter blow strong from tho south at this sea son. The farmer put his men to work on the north side of tho Hr grove. They cut a log and dragged It close to tho north side of tho bases of tho fir trees, and then cut tho surface roots of the trees that were to bo felled. The prep, aratlons wcro made during tho first day, and theu the men went home nud slept whllo the wind did the rest. Dur ing tho night a strong wind blew tho trees dowu, and they, In falling ncross tho logs, pulled up tho taproots. Tho next day tho men sawed up the fallen trees, burucd the brush, and laid their logs for another lot of trees. They proceeded In this way until tho whole grove had disappeared. Farmer's Ad vocate.
