THE NEW AGE. PORTLAND. OREGON. fc u ,Rt If jfi a : h-' k! TOPICS OF ) THE TIMES. The mnn wiio (?rtH ttrvit too uitslly Hakes oilier people tired, too. Truth In utrmwr tlinn llctlon. Well ird IlnrdliiK Dnvls' ItookH do not null ho well ulnco he Ihtiiiiic uiurrled. The mnn who cuts thu pages of n book with IiIh lliificr docxn't uutlurotund why It Is wrong to eat with liln kulfu. Bhe who Iixih to miikc over pnpa'8 "pants" for Willie hIioiiIiI iiIwu.vh boar In mind that nn yo how, mo hIiiiII yc rip. A woiiinii lit much more llkoty to for get her birthday than to luuve tho plcjldus bohlnd H'hoii Hho ue8 to a. pic nic. The more pootry we read of Mr. Aim tln'a tho more we are convinced that he ought to be put Into VuntmluHter Ab beyat once! A French doctor xayn love Is a iIIh mhc that can be cured by toidcs for the nervoiiH HyHlt-iu. Hut who that ha H wantM It cured? As nHHoclatcd with marriage, there Is lino an unpatriotic Hide to HiIh Hinall gain In population. It proven u grow ing disregard for the united Htute. Antlneptle Hword blades for French duels Hlmply mean whatever bad blood thero may havu been before the light, It won't continue nfter In the remote cane of one being hit. Unmarried men who linger tremnlng on the brink will be pointing at this rplHode a long lime: A Chicago man named Itootli went with IiIh wife to a millinery store. Hho bought a hat. lie Iropped dead. A New York man with an Income of JSO.OOO a year Iimm eoiumltted Hulelde. Ho was probably despondent because of the poor prospect of making It $7fi, tKKI and thus getting ll a position where tho strain or living would bo eased some what. Home frisky donkey at Harvard put enough dynamite In the collego pump to destroy the Hue building before which It Is located, to say nothing of what would have happened to the per ton or persons who would, have been so unfortunate ns to have exploded It. Huch murderous pranks betray an In tltict discreditable to the American youth and severe punishment In, the criminal courtH should follow the ex posure. The recimtly published dairy of the Duchess of Fife contains this remark able quotation from Queen Victoria, it Ignitl-llng for young and old: "(lod has been so good to me that now, In my old age, I want to confess that' I have not any dislikes." One of the greatest cenerals of Victoria's whole reign, Charles Napier, once made a similar tatement: "I never feel angry at any one beyond wishing to bieak their houcH with a broomstick!" Then, as IT repenting of even bis laughing excep tion, Napier added: "That was not my mind that spoke. 1 am a child In' the bands of (lod," It used to be (he mere fact of having written a book wiih sulllcleut to confer distinction upon u mini and to know that a person had got Into print was to be conscious of a certain awe for that Individual. Hut now people tlrst ask, what kind of u book and what Is the nature of the print for which the author Is responsible, and they decline to turn their beads to ga.e at literary medioc rity, A little pallor In the face and a fow Ink stains on the lingers are no longer accepted as the Indications of greatness, and there seems to be a re action In favor of sunburn and earth italus, The man who digs and grows brown seems never to be working In vain, but he who grows wan In the production of short-lived literature Is a pathetically Ineffective llgure. Dr. .1, 0, Jackson, an expert, him been working on the problem "Why hair comes out?" Of !I(H) cases studied by him the majority were of men. The great majority of these persons were of those who led Indoor lives. Nearly nil belong to the Intellectual classcH. Lawyers, doctors, students, professora, newspaper men, llgure In large num bers. Dr. .lacksou's conclusion Is that mental work especially where accom panied by worry or nervous strain, Is the principal cause of baldness. The question arises, why are so few of the women bald? Will they admit that they are less Intellectual than men? Or will they accept balduesH as the bndije of mentality? Woman's chief glory, according to Scripture, Is her hair. As between Intellectual accomplishments and ii notable abxence of personal ulory, which will woman choose? In the fu-s ami tlurry made over the Meel gill graduate the bty who grad uates at the Mime time hardly gets the attention which he deserves. In the years U come, If he does hl duty, be will earn money for the support of tin- girl, who at graduation Is the ecu ler of all eye, lie will be elected to i he City Council and possibly to Con grc; he will preach the gospel and practice law; he will start a factory or open a hUiducM, In a large degree the future welfare of the country will de pend upon his Intelligent and honest ac tivity. The pivJinlWngalnst thj col lege graduate, which never hud a sound foundation lu fuel, U gruduully disap pearing. He hna shown his force tn al most every department of life, until It has come to be admitted that the so called self-made man does not hold a monopoly of all the bralua and energy In the country. 8o, while all will unlto In drinking a toast to the maiden In her white frock and blue ribbons, a similar If not an equal honor Is due to the newly made bachelor of arts. Tho college man of to-dny knows as well as any one can tell liltn that all his futuro success depends most largely upon his own unaided efforts. The world Is his apple and his education Is simply the kulfe with which he must peel It. The responsibilities of citizenship I" a well-worn subject for an nddresH, but In discussing the topic before the League of Wisconsin Municipalities Governor Scolleld gave expression to some Ideas, ouo of which was that ns the man who neglects his family Is an object of reproach, ho should bo the man who Ignores his obligations to the State which protects him and makes It possible for him to provide for his fam ily, (inventor .Scotleld thinks that th luck of a proper hciino of responsibility Is shown most clearly In the matter of taxpnylng. The American citizen does his besU to avoid payment of direct taxation, and even when he pays his tnxes Indirectly he does not seem to enro much what becomes of tho money. He protests also against the tendency to Increase the public revenue through taxation. "There Is a serious danger hcre" ho declared. "Kvery dollar raised by taxation beyond the legiti mate needs of tho government Invites corruption and extravagance, and thus Jeopurdl7.es the welfare of tho Stato or nation. Kvery tlmo a dollar of tho pttlt He money Is wrongly expended It Is our fault. And tho real evil Is not merely thut thero tuny be public money ex travngautly used, or that there may be corruption lu Its expenditure, but for every dollar that Is wrongly expended the beneficiaries of the State, the help less classes for which It Reeks to pro vide, nro wronged and public nioraU ure debauched." It does not take the statistics of col lege classes, nor the statements of pro fessors and deans of Institutions of learning to show that the professions are rapidly becoming overcrowded. There are nearly llfty States lu the Union, none uf them so poor us not to boast of an Institution of collegiate de gree, and some of them have many. All of these temples of philosophy and knowledge are turning out never-ceasing streams of professionals. Law and medicine and theology are the gentle manly callings, ami these claim the majority or the collego men. Hut ir you nru contemplating a college course, or If you have a sou or daughter bent on such u course, think over the situation before you deteimliiu to have a preach er, or a doctor or n lawyer lu the fam ily. Medicine, perhaps, Is less crowded than either, of the other professions; but lu any of them It, will be u dlllleult thing for a young man to make a living and retain his self-respect. Hut thero are other avenues for the college man lu callings not u whit less dlgnllled, and which not only promise greater material results, but give to a man the satisfaction of knowing that he Is u worker- u creator lu tJils great and busy world of never-ending crentlons. The civil and constructing engineer has an ever-whlenlng lleld opening before him; the chemist, whose operations are lu commercial Hues, has possibilities of the greatest degree awaiting his re searches mid discoveries; the skilled machinist becomes dally a more and more Important perhouage lu the world's development, lu short, men and women with trained mjmls and hands are the sort of people there Is u demand for now. A-nndy-halred doctor of 22, a llly-tlngered lawyer of similar age, or ii weak-eyed theologian or 2.' are about the most useless Individuals lu the great human family to-day. Hands that are sinewy, eyes that are alert ror the possibilities of the Individual and the race, minds trained to value the concrete things of the world, are what tho nation, the world need; they nro what must be had. The care of estates tiuil lust testaments, of weak livers and deranged stomachs, of slu-lmrrled souls, have occupied the attention of the trained mind exclusively long enough; the Held has grown too smalt. The wise young man who Is on the threshold or life will not calculate upon gaining a living by taking euro of either. He will aspire to do some thing, where such great things as ca nals, warships, tunnels, powerful ex plosives, new chemical compounds, are being evolved by the combination of trained brains and bands, for that Is the sort of professional man who will occupy the world's attention lu the future. Huislnn Minns KxugtiorMtcit. United States Consul Hollowny at St. Petersburg has this to say on gold milling lu Siberia: "The value of Hits shin gold tulues has been greatly exag gerated. Several experienced Ameri can mining engineers, who are admit ted to be tho best In the world, have visited Siberia In the Interests of Kttg llsh, as well as American, capitalists during the past 'three years and made extensive examinations of the condi tions, and I have ttot heard of n single company being orgauUed ns a result of their reports. The mining Is almost all placer, there being but two sinal' qtiurU mines lu the Ural Mountains which are owned by French capitalists and are said to bo loslug money. There Is very little foreign capital In Siberia. No iidvnuitgcs are offered to or discrim inations made In favor of Amerlcaus engaging lu any kind of business lu Itussta."
