Man Hoisted to a Koof by the Weight of a Barrel of Iirlcks A Philadelphia Mnn Electrocuted by nu Umbrella While Viewing n Toy Window. " Tbo good old Anglo-Saxon adage, "The unexpected always happens," is as true to-day as It ever was, and tho fact Is often rerltled by the occurrcuco of peculiar accidents. Some accidents are so odd and brought about by such a strange combination of circumstances that probably they could not bo re peated In a century, simply because all the conditions would not be Identical at a given time. For example, an ac cident happened In connection with tho erection of n sky-scraper In ono of our large Eastern cities In the following manner: A laborer was engaged In regulating tho "paying out" of a ropo attached to a fall and tncklo used In lowering barrels of bricks from ono of tho upper stories to the ground. The ropo was controlled by being wound two or three times nround a gnsplpe. one eud of which was stuck luto a holo In the woodwork on tho ground lloor. At tho time the accident In question occurred n barrel was tilled with bricks preparatory to being lowered aud was Bwung out Into midair In tho isunl way. In paying out the ropo the la borer carelessly let It slip off tho gas pipe, but he clung tenaciously to tho end of the rope and Ills weight, being less than that of the barrel of bricks bo was hoisted to the top of tho building as the bricks descended, tho barrel striking him as It passed not sufllclent ly hard, however, to compel him to loosen his grasp. As the bricks reach ed the ground the Jar knocked the bot tom out of the barrel and released tho bricks. As a consetiueuco tho lnborcr, clinging to tho ropo with a tenacity born of despair, fell to the ground. The barrel In Its turn struck tho beams at the top and broke Into pieces, which J fell upon the man lying below. It Is neediest to nay that the man was seri ously Injured, but, curious to say, n pipe which he was smoking nt tho mo ment he started on his perilous Journey to the roof was held still In his clinched teeth when he was picked up. Hero Is another raso where all tho beholders expected to see a man (lashed to death, but through pure accident be en mo out without a scratch. This also occurred on a building In course of con struction. A worklngmnn who was employed on ono of tho upper stories of a frame building stepped off and fell to the ground. Ills companions thought surely that he must bo killed, or at any rate severely hurt, but thero was a huge pile of shavings where ho fell and he tumbled Into them as If Into a feather bed and after ho recovered from his surprise picked himself up and re turned to his work In tho upper part of tho building as nonchalantly as though nothing unusual had happened. Here Is a mnn who met with a Btrnnge accident, but who did not get off ns luckily ns the hero of the pile of shavings. He heard a cry of tiro In a houso adjoining his own. In his own house he hnd a chemical 11 ro extin guisher, which he fnsteued to his back and went to see what ho could do to assist his neighbors. For some reason best known to Itself tho extinguisher went off like n huge skyrocket and tho uufortunuto mnn was lifted bodily through the window and hurled to tho ground and killed by the fall, although not Injured In the slightest degreo by the explosion of the extinguisher. Tho grentest risk Incurred In shoot ing Is generally that of being hurt by tho direct discharge of tho piece, but here Is tho case of a man who was out hunting nnd discharged his gun, when a shot, through pure misadventure, hit a hard object and rebounded Into one of his eyes, completely destroying tho sight. Ono stormy night In Philadelphia a man was standing before a show win dow engrossed In the beautiful holiday display. Ho was holding an umbrella over hs. head and abovo him was an nrc light. In somo unaccountable way (lie tip of tho rod of his umbrella came lu contact with the Iron frnmo of tho lamp, the frame, becausoof some freak of the current, having become charged. Tho circuit was completed nnd the man, who an Instnut before belloved himself In a place of perfect safety, received a shock which killed him. And so It Is that the most remote and Insignificant cnuses produce startling results. A man Is never hurt lu Just the same manner he anticipates, If he thinks about It at all. If ho had a dread of railway smashups ho Is usu ally dragged out of telescoped passen ger trains comparatively uninjured, but escapes that rate oniy to sneeze too hard on somo lU-stnrrcd day, breaking a blood vessel In a vital locality, from which bo dies. San Francisco Cull. Rooklntr Ctialr and lnannltf. The rocking chair causes Insanity, so It Is said. In fact, the physlclaus are claiming that the rocking chairs are the cause of the nervous troubles from which women suffer nnd aro ad vising their relegation to any place where they will not be used. The more nervous nnd tired a person Is the more vigorously she rocks, totally oblivious to the fact that energy Is simply being consumed by the endless motion and strength that might be applied is wast ed dally. Jlow Pattl Idonttned Herself. On her marriage to Iiaron do Cedcr- tttrorn, Pnttl left orders at her home that her mall should all be forwarded to the Cannes postoQlce. On her arrival here she went to the postofilce and sked If there were any letters for tho Baroness Adellna d Ccderatroio Pattl. "Lot of them." . "Then give them to me." "Have you any old letters by whlcs I can Identify you?" "No, 1 have nothing but my visiting card. Here It Is." "Oh, that's not enough, madam; any ono can get visiting cards of other peo ple If you want your mall, you will have to give mo a better proof of yout Identity than that." A brilliant Idea then struck Madams Pattl. Sne began to sing. A tbuchlng song she chose, tho one beginning, "A voice loving and tender," nnd never did she put more heart Into the melody, And marvelous was the change ns the brilliant music broke through tho In tense silence, hi a few minutes tho quiet postotllcc was tilled with people, nnd hardly had the singer concluded the flr8t few lines of he ballad when an old clerk camo forward and Bald, trembling with excitement: "It's Pattll Pattll There's no one but Adellua Puttl who could sing like thnt." "Well, ore you satisfied now?" asked the singer of the otllclal who hnd doubt ed her Identity. Tho only reply which he mado was to go to tho drawer and hand her the pile of letters. Good lilfiHtliiK. "Tho guides who pilot visitors about lu Norway," Bald a returned traveler to the New York Tribune, "are a pleas ant, Intelligent set of men. They speak our language fairly well, and aro al ways anxious to pick up new words. "Sometimes this desire lends to funny mistakes. While exploring somo of the wild and precipitous ell lis ono day with my guide, wo enmo upou n spot which looked llko uu abnudoued quarry. '"What Is this. Karl? I asked. 'Ilavo they been getting out stouu hereV " 'Yes, sir,' he answered; 'It Is whero. some time ago they have bceu shooting tho rocks.' '"Oh, yes; blttRtlng.' I Bald, with n smile, and Karl's quick ears caught tho uew word for 'nhootlng.' I heard him murmuring It to himself two or thrcn times afterward. "The next day our Journey brought us Into n largo tract of magnlllcent forest 'Karl,' said I, 'thero ought to bo lino hunting hero In the season.' " 'Yes. sir,' was tho prompt reply, 'very good limiting.' Then with tho nlr of n man who sel7.es nu opportunity he added proudly, 'Indeed, It Is near here, sir, that wo blast many bunrs.' "Certainly," replied tho Inwyer, "If thero nro no good reasons why It should not bo done." "Well," rejoined the caller, "my iiamo Is Park." "Yes?" "I named my oldest boy Washing ton." "Well?" "And my youngest I nnmed Jnckson." "Washington Park and Jnckson Park. Very good." "But thero Is a dnughtcr, Lucy, who comes between tho two. I want to havo her uamo changed to Midway Plalsauce." A Tenderhearted Cnngreaaman. "On tho steps of tho Capitol tho oth er day some small boys were torment' Ing n poor, forlorn feline, when n menv her of the flouso enmo upon them autl deuly. "Oh, boys, thnt Is cruel!" as ono of tho boys gnve tho kitten a , vicious punch, whereat tho boys ran j quickly away. The meuiber. who Ib ii new one, turned to leave, when the little morsel gave a pitiful "meow" aud limped a few steps. "Tho poor thing Is In mo and suffering," ho said, und lifting It tenderly ho examined It, and evidently concluding It was a seri ous matter took out a tine linen hand kerchief, lu which ho wrapped tho kitten. He then dropped It gently Into his overcoat pocket and mndo his way to the cars. Washington Star.
