Three Hood River Valley High School seniors brought home top places from the Robert D. Clark Invitational Speech and Debate
Tournament at the University of Oregon on Feb. 15-16. Competing in Dramatic Interpretation, Maggie Bertrand won first and Audrey
Schlemmer (pictured at right) took second. Theo McCormick won second place in Radio Commentary. The team (pictured above)
entered 20 students in 42 events at the annual competition. Freshman Arden Reid was awarded third place Speaker in Junior Par-
liamentary Debate. Nine students qualified to final rounds of competition. Fourth place winners were the Duo Interpretation team of
Jacob Kaplan and Bertrand and freshman Theo Levine, Junior Poetry. Finishing in fifth place were senior Nazareth Chavarria in Prose
Reading, sophomore Jazmin Contreras in Program Oral Interpretation, freshmen Melanie Glatter, Junior Poetry and Sadie Smith, Infor-
mative. Smith was acknowledged as the top Novice Speaker in her event and was a finalist in Junior Prose. Senior Jordan Killingsworth
placed sixth in Junior Poetry and made the final round in Junior Radio Commentary.

lumbia Gorge launched its
Dining Out for a Good Cause
March 2020 campaign on
March 1.
Dine at one of 12 participat-
ing restaurants on a designated
day in March and that restau-
rant will donate a portion of
the day’s proceeds to the Unit-
ed Way of the Columbia Gorge,
which supports more than
30 non-profits in the Gorge
serving youth, the elderly, nu-
trition and family education
programs, literacy, wellness,
and more.
