Hood River Valley’s varsity boys basketball team fell short against Redmond High School 49-39 Friday, Jan. 31. This marks Redmond’s fourth consecutive win. The Panthers’ dangerous of- fense was the main focus in the first quarter. Redmond seniors Cooper Browning and Dylan Moss net- ted a total of three three-pointers. With help from senior Henry Chambers and sophomore Gar- rett Osborne, the Panthers lead the first quarter with 17 points. The Eagles only dropped nine points. As the quarter ended, HRV junior Ian Searcy was fouled after making a bucket. Searcy nailed the free throw, closed out the quarter with assurance and an enthusiastic home crowd. In the second quarter, Red- mond kept their offensive mo- mentum going with hard and fast passes but HRV’s defense lowered their scoring to nine points. Eagle offense did manage to drive into the paint multiple times, but couldn’t execute. Christopher Dirks, head coach for the Eagles, said both junior Jack Siekkinen and senior Cruise Hawk were going to be aggressive in the key, which they were. Entering the second half, the Eagle squad came out with en- ergy and outscored the Panthers 12-9. In the fourth quarter, HRV outscored Redmond again 13-12, but was not enough for the win. The Eagles’ was also in a lot of foul trouble: 10 fouls plagued the team in the second half and eight in the first. “We knew they were going to come out with fire in the second half,” Reagan Gilbertson, head coach for Redmond, said. “They hit some tough shots in the sec- ond half, and they played well.” One player that proved to be tough for the Eagle offense was Moss. At 6 feet five inches, Moss easily rebounded and muscled his way out of trouble. “He’s our everything. He’s averaging 20-10 this year,” Gil- bertson said. “It’s a nice luxury to have when a shot goes up most likely he’s going to get it. So, we don’t have to work on rebounding as much as we did in the past.” HRV hits the court again Fri- day, Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m. as they visit The Dalles. Ridgeview and Redmond swim teams visit HRV By SHELLY RAWDING For the News The Hood River Valley Eagles boys and girls swimmers took on Intermountain Conference teams Ridgeview and Redmond in a double dual meet last Thurs- day at the Hood River Aquatic Center. The girls came out ahead in both duals: 119-41 against Ridgeview and 139-26 against Redmond. For the boys, they lost a close dual with the strong Redmond team 88-80, but came out on top against Ridgeview 99-50. There was a very close race to start off the individual events of the meet. Madeket Greenleaf won the 200-meter freestyle by 0.06 over Ridgeview’s Aria Mascall. Greenleaf also swam to a second place finish in the 100- meter buterfly. Sarah Arpag continued her domination of the 100-meter butterfly and 100-meter back- stroke events by finishing first in both. Faith Ocheskey won both the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyles to help the girls lead the Eagles to their wins. Adam Burke won the 400- meter freestyle for the boys and was fifth in the 200-meter freestyle while Olivia Sumer- field won the girls 400-meter freestyle and was third in the 200 individual medley. David Hecksel swam to the win in the 50 freestyle and was second in the 100-meter backstroke. Clayton Lee was first in the 100-meter butterfly and third in the 200 individual medley while Luke Southall took top honors in the 200-meter freestyle and was second in the 100-meter freestyle. Celilo Brun was sec- ond in both the 200-meter in- dividual medley and 100-meter breaststroke while Chloe Bull- ock swam to second in the 400- meter freestyle. Owen Summer- sett was second in the 400-meter freestyle and fourth in the 200- meter freestyle while Lillie Tom- linson swam to second place in the 50-meter freestyle and third in the 100-meter freestyle against the Redmond teams. Gavin Hackett was third in the 100-meter butterfly and fourth in the 100-meter breaststroke. Mary Rose Kissinger was third in the 100-meter butterfly, to finish the Eagles’ sweep of that event. Emma Titus was third in both the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter breaststroke events. Abby McCormack finished third in the 50-meter freestyle and fourth in the 100-meter freestyle while Campbell Keller was fourth in the 200-meter individual medley and third in the 100-meter backstroke. Teddy Parkinson was fourth in the 100-meter breaststroke while Tristin Smith swam to third in the 100-meter freestyle. The Eagles have one more home dual meet at Hood River Aquatic Center versus The Dalles on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 4 p.m. Seniors from both Hood River and The Dalles will be honored. Kids compete in Meadows Challenge By SHANA SWEITZER For the News The first youth ski race of the year was held at Mt. Hood Meadows last weekend. Ski- ers ages 5-13-years-old raced the slalom and giant slalom with athletes coming from all over Oregon and Washington. Hood River local skiers from Cooper Spur Alpine Team were impressive with U12 girls Annabel Webster winning and Sky Valvado Kerr taking second in the giant sla- lom. Rachel Giordano placing third in the U8 age class. CSAT boys topped the giant slalom podium with Camer- on Beck in first for U10 boys. Boden Irving took first for U8 boys. Sunday’s slalom chal- lenging icy conditions proved CSAT’s own Tippen Adams can stand on the downhill ski when she topped the podium in first place for U12 girls. The team’s next race, the Cooper Dual, will be Sunday, Feb. 9 at 9 a.m.
