His argument: fire is “nature’s phoenix,” a beneficial process that re- stores plant and animal biodiversity. Disaster prep talk at museum July 21 Earthquakes have been and will occur in Ore- gon. Are you concer ned about being prepared if one should hit Hood River? Do you need some advice on dealing with the heat wave lately? Do you know about all Red Cross’s helpful apps? Come learn how to be pre- pared for any natural disaster at the Disaster Preparedness Presentation. You will learn about how to be prepared for an earthquake, flood, fire, and other natural disasters, so that you will never be caught unprepared or uninformed about what to do next. This Disaster Preparedness Presentation is presented by Andrea Smith an Oregon State Service Corps (OSSC) AmeriCorps volunteer at the History Museum of Hood River County. The OSSC is sponsored by the American Red Cross who created the Disaster Preparedness Pre- sentation. Klindt’s presents writing workshop this weekend Klindt’s Booksellers and Stationers, The Dalles, will host Oregon Book Award win- ner Jay Ponteri on July 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ponteri will teach a memoir writing workshop. Cost is $40; seating is limited. Refresh- ments will be provided. To register, call Klindt’s at 541- 296-3355. Jay Ponteri directs the undergraduate creative writing program at Maryl- hurst University and show:tell, The Workshop for Teen Writers & Artists. “For me the joy of memory- based writing arises from re- calling a memory I could not have imagined and did not plan on recalling before that present moment of composi- tion. I’m talking about work- ing from inadvertent memory. “This kind of memory rises to the surface of conscious- ness without intention or de- sign on my part. I don’t reach for memory — I let memory reach for me. In this class we will look at a couple memoir excerpts and do writing exer- cises that encourage writers to get out of the way then pay close attention to what materi- alizes. At the end we shall read aloud from our work! Fun!” VACATION BIBLE SCHOOLS Church of Christ — Hood River Church of Christ will be taking a look at what goes on inside our hearts this year as we discover how Jesus turns hearts “Inside Out” Aug. 3-7 from 9 a.m. to noon. Such is the argument of Do- minick DellaSala, Chief Sci- entist for the GEOS Institute of Ashland, who gave a free talk at the Hood River County Library on Wednesday. The event, organized by Portland environmental group Bark, brought in about 30 people. The night’s topic was wild- fires and the ecological bene- fits that come in their after- math. The presentation was based on DellaSala’s book, which had just hit Amazon’s digital shelves the night be- fore: The Ecological Impor- tance of Mixed-Severity Fires — Nature’s Phoenix. “Fire is to a dry forest what rain is to a rainforest,” said DellaSala. “And that’s a hard one for a lot of people to un- derstand, because you visual- ize this verdant, green rain forest on one hand and this W ORSHIP D IRECTORY ASSEMBLIES OF GOD RIVER OF LIFE ASSEMBLY Lead Pastor Terry Abbott 979 Tucker Rd. He argued that heavy fire suppression, often conducted during emergen- cies, is damaging to the wildlife, as well as unneces- sary in remote areas. He said black back wood- peckers and spotted owls are “resilient” in fires, especially if there are patches of green trees at hand to sustain true biodiversity. “The green trees are the bedroom. The burned trees are the kitchen … they get prey in the brush,” said DellaSala. LDS CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS 18th & May, Hood River ALL ARE WELCOME! SHEPHERD OF THE VALLEY BIBLE CHURCH 8th & Pacific, Hood River Tommy Moon, Pastor Sunday Service 9:30 a.m. svbchr.org DellaSala argued that cer- tain forest thinning opera- tions can be beneficial, but most are harmful. He said homeowners can make a big- ger impact by clearing brush and trees in 200-foot perimeter around their homes, as op- posed to remote wooded areas. He also indicated that tin roofing, as opposed to older wood constructions, is imper- ative in building a “firewise” home. DellaSala is the founder and Chief Scientist of the GEOS Institute in Ashland, an environmental conservation group. He is a political advo- cate, who has spoken at con- gressional hearings in defense of the Endangered Species Act, roadless area conserva- tion, national monument des- ignations, forest protections and climate change.
