A8 Hood River News, Wednesday, June 24, 2015 Summer heats up at the HR Library The Hood River County Library — and its branches in Parkdale and Cascade Locks — have a variety of classes, crafts and reading programs for the whole family to enjoy this summer. On June 24, the Bug Chicks will be at the Hood River Library at 5:30 p.m. Entomologists Kristi and Jessica are on a mission to raise the next generation of “bug dorks.” Live bugs! And on June 25, Crafternoons return to the Hood River Library at 2 p.m. Come out of the heat and enjoy a free craft project provided by G. Williker’s Toy Shoppe. All ages are wel- come. The library has summer reading programs for kids, teens and adults this year. Sign up at the library or one of its branches. Kids will pick a reading goal and earn prizes as they progress towards it. Special performances, crafts and activities count as an extra hour of reading. Teens will be awarded up to three prizes for every five hours of reading completed. Prizes include candy and books; three $50 cash cards provided by Co- lumbia Bank will be raffled off at the end of the summer. And adults are invited to read anything they want. For every book or audiobook read or listed to, adults will be entered into a prize raffle; last day to enter is Aug. 28. Prizes vary depending on the library site: Dog River and Skylight Theater gift cards in Hood River, Cascade Locks Ale House gift certificate in Cascade Locks, and Sol- era Brewery gift certificate in Parkdale. Relay For Life is July 18 The American Cancer Society held its annual Bark For Life event June 20 at the Hood River County Fairgrounds — the same spot Relay For Life will be held next month. Bark For Life honors the lifelong contri- butions of canine caregivers to cancer sur- vivors. Families and their dogs came to- gether for a few hours of celebration and companionship, and to walk — partici- pants raise funds by asking friends and family to support their efforts. The same holds true for Relay For Life Columbia Gorge, scheduled for July 18 at the fairgrounds, from 8 a.m. until mid- night. Teams and individuals are invited to set up campsites and take turns walking or running around the track. Cancer sur- vivors and caregivers take a celebratory first lap to start each event. Those honoring loved ones lost to cancer and those battling the disease may dedi- cate a luminaria, which are illuminated after dark and are personalized with a name, photo, memory or message. Funds raised support cancer research, education and prevention programs, and critical services for people facing cancer. Those wishing to get involved or make a donation to the Relay for Life Columbia Gorg e are asked to visit www.relayforlife.org/columbiagorgeor or call 1-800-227-2345. Photos by Miko Ruhlen THE FINAL CLASS of the spring/summer bird walk series, led by Hood River Hobbies owners Miko and Zed Ruhlen, included a bird banding demonstration at a habitat restoration site along the Pow- erdale Corridor. Permission and support was provided by Kate Conley of Columbia Land Trust for the site and banding was facilitated by Cathy Flick. Class proceeds were donated to Hood River Com- munity Education, and while there are no summer classes planned, those interested can join the bird watching email list at miko@hoodriverhobbies.com. Port of Hood River announces waterfront closures for July 4 festivities The Fourth of July holiday will limit ac- cess to several Port of Hood River water- front properties beginning Friday, July 3 when the Hood River Eye Openers Lions Club begins setting up its fireworks display just west of the mouth of the Hood River. The following areas will be closed or have limited access: The Spit: The Port will close the Spit area at noon on Friday, July 3 until noon on Sunday, July 5. Event Site Access to Sandbar: Access to the Sandbar from the Event Site will be closed at 7 p.m. on July 4 to all spectators and recreationalists due to fireworks. Kite- board launching and landing from the Event Site grass is prohibited. Marina Beach and Marina Park: The sandy area of the Marina Beach will be closed at 7 p.m. on July 4. Once the Marina Park parking areas are full, “Closed” signs will be posted at the entrance and addition- al vehicles will not be allowed into Marina Park. Nichols Basin West Edge: With construc- tion of the new walking path planned for completion July 2, access to the wide walk- ing path and new sandy beach will be open. However, newly planted grass areas will be fenced off to avoid damage and enable suc- cessful establishment of the grass seed. Use of fireworks by the public is prohib- ited on all Port properties, including the Marina and Waterfront areas. This policy is strictly enforced. People planning on watching the fireworks from the Marina and the Waterfront are reminded that the show’s conclusion usually brings very heavy traffic congestion. The Port urges patience and cooperation to help ease the pressure cre- ated by the large number of vehicles attempting to exit the area at the same time. Dark conditions and heavy pedestrian traffic during this time make it all the more important to use cau- tion and take your time dri- ving in the area.
