A3 Sternwheeler Days returns with familiar activities, new twists T he Columbia Gorg e Lions Club presents the 40th annual Sternwheeler Days Festival, a fun filled weekend in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge. This year’s event takes place June 26, 27, 28, celebrating the Gorge by showcasing vendors from our local area and surround- ing regions. Event times are Friday noon - 9 p.m., Satur- day 10 a.m. – 9 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The rendezvous of the Mountain Men here on Thunder Island will be back, depicting fur trading camps of the 1830s and ‘40s. There will be live demonstrations during the event, including firing the cannon and ax throwing. Live entertainment hap- pens Saturday night featur- ing blues from The Angel Bouchet Band, food and craft vendors, and Walk on Water- balls are also planned. A dunk tank with the Hood River County Sheriff, Bingo, and the Ducky Derby — get your duck before the race Saturday afternoon — will add to the fun. Also featured this year will be a beer garden all weekend. The parade will be Saturday morning at 11 a.m. down Wanapa, and the 5k and 10k walk/run will be at 9 a.m. Saturday morning and Church in the park at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The Lions club will be giv- ing away free Sternwheeler ride tickets every two hours during the Ster nwheeler Days Festival; you don’t need to be present to win, sign up at the Lions information booth near the pavilion. Overnight camping spots overlooking the Columbia River are available through the Port of Cascade Locks. Call 541-374-8619 for more in- formation. Downtown Hood River is filled with fascinating histo- ry — and you can learn about in a one-hour tour. The Historic Downtown Walking Tours provided by the Histo- ry Museum of Hood River County offers an architectural and cultural history of downtown buildings and sites. Come learn about the lady who fell through glass, Mt. Hood Railroad in 1942, The Butler Bank and so much more. There’s even an activity to keep kids entertained. Tours will be every Tuesday at 10 a.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m. starting June 23 through July 28. Tours will start at Overlook Park on State and Second streets. A $5 donation is suggested. Join knowledgeable muse- um staff as you learn about the architecture and cultural importance of many of the city’s historic sites. You must be able to stand and walk for one hour. File photo MOUNTAIN MEN RENDEZVOUS brings pieces of veritable histo- ry to Thunder Island as Northwest residents who study, practice, and often live by 19th century methods will display their clothing, wares and lore.Visitors are encouraged to talk with the Rendezvous participants. Open mic at Good Medicine The Good Medicine Lounge on the Heights announces a weekly open mic on Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. The tea house hopes that the music can “become a popular gath- ering for the neighborhood that focuses on well-being and is accessible to all ages.” The Good Medicine Lounge, 1029 May St., Hood River, (541) 436-2540. ‘Artists Create’ submissions needed July 15-31 “Gorge Artists Create” is the annual open juried show held each summer at The Dalles Art Center. The theme this year is “Fruits Of Our Labor.” Artists are encour- aged to be creative and asked to explain how their art- work relates to the theme upon submission. Works in all media are welcome. This show is open to the Mid-Colum- bia area and is very popular with local artists. Cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place as well as People’s Choice will be awarded. Submission will be accepted July 15 - 31 during regular gallery hours: Tuesday - Sat- urday 11-5 p.m. Artists may submit up to three pieces. Blues Cabaret June 21 The Griffin House presents an original theatrical Broadway-blues performance by The Blues Cabaret, fea- turing Northwest artists Dave Fleschner, Earl Thomas, Billy Mixer, and Jimmy Wilcox on Sunday, June 21. Crit- ics say, “The Blues Cabaret is a dynamic new song cycle about a wistful musician who finally walks the road not taken – years too late. It’s told through sixteen-plus songs, four soulful singers and one swinging band.” Doors open at 6 p.m.; show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets available at Eventbrite.com; search for "Blues Cabaret." A portion of the proceeds benefits FISH. The Hazelnuts at Sandbar Café Sandbar Café hosts The Hazelnuts, featuring Crazy Pete and Gary Reed, 5-8 p.m. June 20. Food is avail- able on the dock.
