Cloud Cap Inn stands on the northeastern flank of Mount Hood in the Hood River Ranger District of the Mt. Hood National Forest. The crescent-style log struc- ture was the first permanent resort lodge of its kind on the mountain. Cloud Cap Inn was built in 1889 to be an elite mountain retreat and is now a search and rescue base for the Hood River Crag Rats, the oldest search and rescue organiza- tion in the United States. The Hood River Crag Rats began caring for the structure in 1952 under a special use per- mit with the Mt. Hood Na- tional Forest. The Crag Rats and local forest workers have been restoring the aged structure over the last few decades and their work is nearly com- plete. Cloud Cap Inn is listed on the National Register of His- toric Places. The building has endured years of ex- treme winters and mountain storms, and has been one of the unique and truly excep- tional destinations of Mt. Hood for the last 100 years. Views from the inn are in- credible and access to the Mt. Hood Wilderness is just adja- cent to the lodge. The road to the lodge, which leads from Cooper Spur to the Cloud Cap Inn, was closed for several sum- mers until last year, due to concerns that trees killed by a 2008 forest fire would tum- ble down onto the road. This year, the road is open once again and tours will kick off on June 21.
