DENNY LEONARD of Hood River American Legion Post 22 presents HRVHS senior James Estes with a scholarship for $500 at Local Scholarship Night Wednesday at the high school. The lights dimmed and the evening opened with a smattering of applause. Local Scholar- ship Night at the Hood River Valley High School had begun. This year, 83 seniors received scholarships after an application process that began in late winter. Seniors then receive a letter inviting them to the scholarship night in mid-May if they have been selected for a scholarship. Applicants are not told what scholarships they received or how many they have been se- lected for. This makes Local Scholarship Night quite an adventure. The students wait with bated breath as presenters come to the stage and announce the winners of their scholar- ships. There were 182 local scholarships awarded this year, which gave out a total amount of $155,000 to HRVHS seniors. The best part about scholarship night is that the money comes fully from the local community. It is an inspiration to know that our commu- nity cares so deeply about its graduating class and can’t wait to see them succeed. Local Scholarship Night is a night to recognize HRVHS seniors for their accomplishments and to reward them.
