There, guides have less than a week to help the newly dead sift through their memories for one defining moment to take with them to Heaven. As the film reveals, finding a life’s worth of meaning in a single event is no simple task. What if you had to choose one memory to take with you into the afterlife? “After Life” draws on the recollections of hundreds of elderly Japanese, some of whom join the cast of the film. Their stories reveal not only their personal pleasures and horrors, but also the broader history of postwar Japan. By portraying charac- ters struggling to come to terms with the past, the film explores our attachment to life — bursting with pride and falsehood, pain, and pleasure — and, most impor- tantly, to love. A short discussion will fol- low the film. This event is being orga- nized as par t of a new monthly discussion series on death, dying and end-of-life issues sponsored by the Hood River Library. Check the Hood River Library web- site for future events. The program is free and open to the public. WE MEAN, REALLY, REALLY BIG . . . Deadline for ‘Big Art’ May 15 Art of Community was established in 2014 by artists to build on this dynamic relation- ship, engage the community with art and work collaboratively to further promote and develop public art throughout the Gorge making it available to people of all ages and backgrounds. In its second year, the Art of Community program, aka “Big Art,” consists of up to 25 sculptures on loan from artists around the country. More sponsors have been added this year, creating more art opportunities. Artists are asked to submit applications for placement of their sculptures around Hood River’s downtown, waterfront and Heights areas for a period of about one year. From the submissions a committee will se- lect a number of pieces to be installed. The potential buyers that might be viewing your art is quite significant. Selections are scheduled to be made by June 1 and the 2015-16 works installed by late August, in time for the Sept. 4 opening re- ception. The artwork will all be professionally pho- tographed in their site and we will be de- signing and printing 20,000 Walking Tour Maps and distribute them throughout the Pacific Northwest to help improve artists ex- posure to new customers. Visit art-of-community.com to learn more, including Artist Response information (deadline May 15).
