A8 Hood River News, Saturday, May 2, 2015 SPORTS BRIEFS Softball shut out by Hermiston The HRV Eagles (9-11 overall, 2-4 Columbia River Confer- ence) won their last two games against Hermiston (7-12 over- all, 1-5 CRC) on Saturday, but fared poorly against the Bulldogs on Tuesday, losing 10-0 in Hermiston after five innings. The Bull- dogs put the Eagles in a hole early, scoring two runs in the first inning, five in the second, and two more in the third to go up 9-0. Hermiston would eventually go on to score 10 runs off seven hits and was charged with one error. HRV had as many hits as they did errors: three in all, coming off a double by Kelsey Wells in the top of the third and singles by Jessica De- Hart and JoJo Karr in the fifth. Kaylin Winans was with charged with the loss on the mound, giving up seven hits, nine runs, and striking out two batters over three innings. Hannah McNerney pitched the other portion, giving up no hits, striking out one and forfeiting a run. After a doubleheader in The Dalles Friday evening (games had not been played by press time), HRV is back in town Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. to play The Dalles/Dufur. Horizon golf receives sixth seed going into districts The Horizon golf team shot well in its latest outing, accord- ing to coach Oscar Stenberg, who said the boys received a sixth seed out of eight teams at district qualifiers April 29 at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks. Leading the pack was Ian Walker, who shot a team-best 89, followed by Alex Tran (99), RJ Hicks (102), and Mason Bloomster (111), who shot a combined score of 401. Other golfers for the Hawks included Zack Walker (119) and Shaun Wang (125). Horizon will head back to Quail Valley May 11-12 for the district tournament. Boys tennis closes out home match in style It’s been a good season for the HRV boys tennis team and the Eagles enjoyed a Senior Night on Wednesday that saw HRV defeat its opponent, The Dalles, by a score of 7-1. In singles, Scottie Ziegner defeated Griffin Martin (6-2, 6-2), Cooper Holz- man lost to Will Coy in an extremely close match (4-6, 7-6, 13- 15), Will Ferrick defeated Daniel Santillan (6-0, 3-6, 10-8), and Alden Sova defeated Omar Rodriguez (6-0, 6-1). In doubles, the duo of Victor Garibo/Patrick Humann defeated Joe Singhurst/Ethan Semlor (6-3, 6-1), Brandon Campos/Miguel De La Rosa defeated Jesus Barajas/Luiz Diaz (6-3, 6-1), Cole Shep- herd/Hugo Sandoval defeated Cody T./Alex Lopez (6-0, 6-2), and Sawyer Bogard/Quinn Tyler defeated Caleb Turner/Pedro Lopez (6-2, 6-2). Next up is a Saturday doubleheader against Summit and Bend in Madras. Photos by Ben Mitchell HRV GOLF The Eagles golf squad had a home tournament Wednesday at Indian Creek Golf Course against Pendleton, The Dalles, and Hermiston. Shooting for the boys was Dan Kuecheman, who shot an 84, as well as Colson Zack (pictured above, 117), Niels Rasmussen (130), and Aldren Gendreau (150). Shooting for the girls was Carly Wyatt (125), Amy Webber (pictured above, 128), and Sara Hamada (129). The next match for the girls will be districts, May 7-8 at Eagle Crest Resort in Redmond; the boys will have their districts May 11-12. HRV Continued from Page A7 from Hunter to make it 8-7. The lead didn’t last long, though, as Pendleton scored once in the bottom of the sev- enth to send it to extra in- nings. Overall, the game was a slugfest, producing 32 hits between the two teams (HRV 21, Hermiston 11). The ma- jority of the HRV roster had hits, led by Hunter, Cameron, and Lariza, who were three for six at-bats, all singles, with the exception of Lar- iza’s triple. Walker also had three hits, but did it in four at-bats. Wilson had the best average of the game (2 for 2, single, double). Buckley led the team in RBI (4) and Walk- er led in runs scored (4). In a game with so much of- fense from both teams, the pitching stats tend to get overshadowed. HRV put three on the mound, with the win going to Walker, who pitched five innings and gave up five hits, two runs, and struck out two batters. Lar- Athlete of the Week Rily Wilson Girls lax defeated by OES HRV baseball With HRV tied in extra innings, Wilson stepped up to the plate in the 10th inning for his first at-bat of the season, hitting a three-run double that helped HRV defeat Hermiston, 19-9. The girls lacrosse team was once again this season handily defeated by undefeated Portland Division powerhouse Oregon Episcopal School, this time by a score of 15-3. HRV scored three goals against the team that gives up the fewest in the state; goals came from Lydia McElderry (2) and Ellen Hudon. OES’ goalie faced five shots Thursday evening; HRV’s Ella Rand stopped 10 of 25 (40 percent). HRV will play its last regular sea- son game at home against Cleveland, May 7, at 7 p.m. The Athlete of the Week will receive a large pizza with 2 toppings from Papa Murphy’s.
