www.hoodrivernews.com BASEBALL Continued from Page A7 After a scoreless first in- ning, HRV gradually pulled away from Hermiston, scor- ing a run in the second, third, and fifth innings to make the game 3-0 in its favor. A sacrifice fly by Hunter brought Van Hoose home to score HRV’s first run, followed by Chase Lar- iza scoring on a Hermiston error, and then Walker scor- ing off a single from Harvey (ground ball to left field). The Bulldogs awoke from their stupor in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs to knot the game up at 3-all. HRV couldn’t score in the bottom of the inning, and after Hermiston failed to muster any more runs in the top of the seventh, it was up to the Eagles to prevent the Hood River News, Wednesday, April 29, 2015 game for heading into extra innings. The Eagles were able to put men on bases in the bot- tom of the seventh without having to put up a hit, thanks to the Hermiston pitcher first walking Walker, and then intentionally walking Duffy, whose reputation as a hitter apparently preceded himself. With runners on first and second and one out, Harvey stepped up to the plate, and after two foul balls, sent one fair on a line drive into center, allowing Walker to score the game-winning run. Hermiston and HRV both had the same amount of hits in the game, with seven. Coach Erich Harjo said the kind of hits HRV had were very dif ferent over the course of the two games. “More of our hits fell in the first game than the sec- ond,” he said. “We hit the ball hard with guys on in game two, but just right at people. We were a couple of hits to the gap away from blowing that game wide open.” Once again, HRV’s start- ing pitcher led the offense — this time by Harvey, who had a team-high two hits in three at bats, both singles, as well as leading with two RBI. On the mound, Harvey struck out four batters in six in- nings. Duffy served as relief pitcher for one inning, strik- ing out one batter and sur- rendering no hits. T he weekend wins bumped HRV up to No. 8 in 5A and allowed the team to retain its place atop the CRC, just ahead of The Dalles (9-9 overall, 3-2 CRC). HRV was scheduled to play Hermiston away Tuesday afternoon and then travels to The Dalles for a doubleheader on Friday at 5 p.m. Hawks second at Portland Christian Invite Horizon Christian’s track and field team entered the final third of its season by com- peting in two invitational meets this past week, Thursday with 11 other teams at St. Paul and Saturday in the 26-team Portland Christian Invitational. The Hawks were second in both boys and girls team competitions during a rainy, cold afternoon at the Buckaroo Invite at St. Paul. Horizon athletes won three events, in- cluding both the boys and girls triple jump. Sophomore Quinn Roetcisoender won the boys competition and senior Hannah Kempt took first place in the girls event. Hori- zon’s other championship came from sophomore Andrew Rinella, who won the 400- meter run. All told, 16 athletes registered personal bests at the meet, including sophomore Amy Requa, who lowered the school record in the 1500 to 5 minutes, 56.91 seconds. She came back two days later at Portland Christian to run a two-minute personal best and school record 13:34.29 in the 3000. Sophomore teammate Jodee Hicks, and freshmen Paulina Finn and Makoa Whitak- er each had two PRs at St. Paul: Hicks in the long jump and high jump; Finn in the low hurdles and triple jump; and Whitaker in the intermediate hurdles and javelin. Whitaker continues to steadily improve in the javelin, as he threw 121 feet, 2 inches at St. Paul, and then bested that at Portland Christian with a throw of 123-4. Finn also had a good day Saturday, when she tied the school record in the high jump at 4-10 and then ran a leg on Horizon’s school record setting 4X400 relay along with Haley Becnal, Kloee Brown and Kempf. Kempf added a school record and personal best in the 200 (28.09); fellow senior Ryan Aldrich did the same in the shot put (40-10.75). Horizon’s top placer at Portland Christian was junior Salvador Ramirez, the Class 1A state leader in the 1500. Ramirez was second in a tactical metric mile in 4 minutes, 21.11 seconds. Teammate Jony Nelson was ninth in the race, moving into sixth on the 1A state list with a personal best 4:31.32. Horizon competes Thursday at the Southwest Invitational at Sherwood High School and Friday at the Jeff Agar Memorial Invite in Glenwood, Wash. SOFTBALL Continued from Page A7 ena Zeller, who then scored herself thanks to a ground ball hit to right field by Winans. Hermiston added a run in the top of the second, but then was quiet for the next three innings as HRV added a run in the second, third, and fourth innings to extend their lead, 9-1. Wells scored on a passed ball in the second after getting on base with the help of a Hermiston error, Zeller added a run in the third off a single from Munn, and Jessica Karr scored in the fourth thanks a single by Packer. The Bulldogs added a run in the sixth, and then gave the Eagles a scare in the sev- enth inning by adding four runs, but still ended up los- ing by three. Pitcher Hannah McNerney was credited with the win, striking out four batters, walking two, and al- lowing 11 hits over seven in- nings. HRV batters also had 11 hits. Wells and Munn led HRV in the first game with three hits in four at bats and Wells also had a team-high three RBI, tied with Weekly. Munn and JoJo Karr were the lead scorers for HRV with three runs apiece. Zeller led the Eagles’ of- fense in the second game with a perfect for three-for- three at bats, with two sin- gles and a double. Zeller also had a team-high three RBI, and led HRV’s scoring efforts with two runs, tied with Weekly and Wells. The wins helped the Ea- gles put some distance be- tween themselves and the Bulldogs, who were only one A9 HRV track and field beats the elements and the competition at Summit Invitational in Bend The weather was less than ideal for ath- letes during Saturday’s Summit invitational in Bend, but that didn’t stop HRV athletes from producing some of their best efforts of the season. In what has become a regular occurrence this season, standout thrower Sebastian Barajas has once again broken the school record for shot put, throwing the shot 56 feet, 9 inches, defeating his old record of 54 feet 6 inches, which stood for all of four days. Jestena Mattson also broke the school record in the 200 meter dash, running it 24.9 sec- onds, breaking the mark of 25.43 seconds set by Ocean Kuykendall in 1994. “Yes, new records for both Barajas and Mattson, even while battling the hail, snow, sleet, and occasional sun breaks that comes with a Central Oregon spring day. Worst weather we’ve ever seen at that meet, but the competition was still excellent,” said coach Donnie Herneisen. “Both Barajas and Matt- son are highly competitive athletes and high- ly technical, and seem to rise to the chal- lenge whenever the competition is greatest. They both thrive on pressure and competi- tive situations. Jestena was facing some stiff competition from a girl from Boise in both the sprints, while Sebastian’s biggest foe was the weather.” Emily Viuhkola continues to put up great marks in the sprint, Herneisen added. “Run- ning sick on Saturday, she put up another great mark in the 400 meter dash, and we are stretching her a bit to see what she can do in the 800 meter run as well. Never having run that race before two weeks ago, she’s now got the top time in the CRC and may be a big point scorer for us at the District Champi- onships.” Viuhkola is currently No. 3 in 5A for the 400 with a time of 58.48. The girl’s 4x100m relay is also coming to- gether well at the right time. They still have the No. 3 time in 5A (team of Mattson, Vi- uhkola, Lily Heagle, and Sierra Rambo; time of 49.55) and are in the top 10 across all clas- sifications. For the boys, in addition to Barajas, Sam Fults in the throws is really coming along, Herneisen said, who’s just outside the top 10 in 5A for the shot put, and his discus is still improving every week. Parker Kennedy, the No. 2 pole vaulter in HRV history, “continues to be our best all- around track athlete. He scores in the sprints, the hurdles, the jumps, and the throws for us. His 15-0 pole vault mark is still leads the 5A division, and ranks No. 3 in the whole state,” Herneisen added. Overall, the boys team finished sixth of 18 teams and the girls team finished fifth of 17 teams in the invite. Herneisen said the team has come to the point of our season from “where we switch from higher volume/lower intensity train- ing to lower volume/higher intensity. We are refining our small technical movements, and that is turning into some better marks for most of our athletes. Our meet schedule now will shift to purely ‘big competition’ meets, lining up against some of the best competi- tion in the state, honing our skills as we look towards the district and state champi- onships.” This weekend the team has a bit of a split squad, with some heading to the Jesuit Twi- light Relays in Portland and others heading to the Dean Nice Invitational at Gresham High School, both Friday afternoon. CHAMPS! Hood River 14U Baseball Senior Federal Baseball team won the Senior Federal “Tigard Field of Dreams Tournament” this past weekend by beating Westview 10-4 on Saturday; Tigard on Sunday morning, 7-4; and a tough Tualatin team in the championship, 8-6, to take home the first-place trophy. As of Monday afternoon, HRV was ranked 20th and Her miston was ranked 26th. Those victories were especially important in a competitive conference that currently features two teams currently ranked in the top 10: Pendleton (No. 1) and The Dalles/Dufur (No. 9). HRV was scheduled to play the Bulldogs again on Tuesday afternoon in Her- miston, and then travel to The Dalles for a doublehead- er on Friday that starts at 5 p.m. Photo by Ben Mitchell JENNI PACKER slides into second base during the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
