A8 Hood River News, Saturday, April 18, 2015 SHANER Continued from Page A7 also entered unseeded, but didn’t place. Despite having competed in the World of Wrestling Championships before, that didn’t make it any less daunting for Shaner, especially when comparing it to competing in the state championships. “There were like 22 mats; it’s way bigger, a lot harder — it’s like the na- tionals, pretty much,” Shaner says. Adding to that was an early hurdle blocking Shaner’s path to success. After winning his first match in a 6-1 decision, Shaner lost his second match by fall, meaning he was imme- diately placed in a consolation brack- et, putting more pressure on him and making it more difficult to claw his way back to the top. “After I lost, I felt like I had a lot more stress,” he says. EAGLES Continued from Page A7 with 11 putouts in 13 chances. The win over Redmond puts the team at a 7-7 record and an OSAA 5A ranking of 19, which puts HRV rough- ly in the middle of the pack. Halfway through the season and heading into league play, which starts this Saturday with a doubleheader in Pendleton, the Ea gles are ranked behind T he Dalles/Dufur (No. 7, 8-5 overall record), Pendleton (No. 9, 6-7), and ahead of Hermiston (No. 22, 6-6) in the Columbia River Conference. After a bit of a lackluster start to the season, when the Eagles went 2-6, Despite the setback, Shaner went on to win his next nine matches, de- feating some noteworthy wrestlers in the process. However, Shaner says that in order to avoid psyching him- self out, he never looks at his bracket — a way to prevent himself from say, learning that he’s about to compete against a nationally-ranked wrestler. That didn’t work, however, when he faced Bell in the fourth round of the consolation bracket and recognized him. “I knew it was going to be a tough match going into… but I was ready to wrestle him,” Shaner says, who de- feated Bell in a 2-0 decision. Shaner’s toughest match, though, was the final match he won of the tournament against an opponent from California. After going down 4-0, and with less than half a minute left in the third period, Shaner gained the upper hand on his opponent, throwing him in a “lateral drop,” according to Shan- er, who came from behind, and weath- HRV has gotten back on track, win- ning five of their last six games. “We are starting to figure out and thrive in our style of softball,” coach Eric Keller said. “They are playing de- fense to the best of their abilities and when they make plays, it helps boost our offense. It’s fun to watch them bat- tle and enter league (play) on a streak of solid games.” Keller added that HRV has been able to find success by working well to- gether as a team, noting that “every- one has their role.” He did highlight, however, the performances of fresh- man pitchers Hannah McNerney and Kaylin Winans, whom he said “have become solid varsity pitchers.” HRV will also look toward the team’s two heavy-hitting catchers — ering a bloody nose, to win the match in a 5-4 decision. Shaner dropped his next two match- es, but had beaten enough opponents to get sixth place. Baker was proud of the effort Shan- er had given throughout the tourna- ment. “He fought hard and he had great heart,” Baker says. “He puts in a lot of work and he believes in himself.” Shaner says he worked to cut some weight from last year and estimated that during the wrestling season, he trains for about five hours a day be- tween the high school and the wrestling academy. But despite the work he’s already put in, and the re- sults he’s already seen, Shaner is not yet satisfied and is looking forward to competing at an even higher level next year. “I want to be a national champion,” he says. SPORTS BRIEFS Depleted girls lax team edges Cleveland Down four starters, HRV had a tough road to hoe going in Tues- day’s match against Cleveland, but skated by with a 7-6 win despite the thin roster. Coach Andrew McElderry said JV players “did a good job filling (varsity) positions” of captains Lydia McElderry and Riley Bauer as well as Victoria Kohner-Flanagan and Laura Scarborough, who were absent or sidelined, respectively, due to a sprained ham- string, sprained ankle, a “mild concussion,” and personal reasons. In particular, McElderry highlighted the play of Ella Mudry, “who has been solid at defense,” he said, and that of Kat McElderry, whom he said “has an uncanny ability to get herself into solid shooting posi- tion.” He added that Sloan Hall and Blair Holman are both “starting to find (their) groove” and that “Lauren Orr has recently turned it on as of lately. It is obvious that she has been putting in some extra time outside of practice.” Kat McElderry led the team in scoring with four goals on 12 shots, Savannah Brentlinger followed with two goals on six shots, and Daisy Dolan had one goal on four shots. Ground balls were spread around the team, with almost every mem- ber of the roster getting at least one, but Erin Mayer and Savannah Brentlinger led the way with five apiece and Ellen Hudon close be- hind with four. Mayer also led in draw controls, winning four. Girls lax routs Central Catholic freshman Zoe Munn and senior Kelsey Wells — who lead the team in hits with 20 and 18, respectively, and batting av- erage, with .400 each. Wells also leads the team in RBI (14) and Munn leads the team in runs scored (13), doubles (6), stolen bases (15), and extra base hits (7). The team will also rely on the power behind the bat of senior first baseman Breanna Weekly, who leads the team in homers (4) and slugging percentage (.793). As for how HRV will match up against other teams in the conference, it’s hard to say, especially given the teams’ similar records. “League (play) is going to be a chal- lenge for all teams,” Keller said. “We have to go into each game ready to compete and play our best softball.” The HRV girls lax took care of business against Central Catholic for the second time this season, defeating the Rams by a score of 14-4. Leading the scoring effort for HRV was Erin Mayer, who had four goals in nine shots and also led the team in ground balls (5), and draw controls (3, tied with Daisy Dolan). Following up in scor- ing was Kat McElderry (3), Lydia McElderry (3), Ellen Hudon (2), Sam Davies (1), and Riley Bauer (1). Goalie Ella Rand also had a produc- tive night in net, stopping eight of 12 shots and posting a 66.7 save percentage — her best numbers of the season. With six games left, HRV sits in the middle of the field in the Portland league with a 4-3 league record (4-5 overall). Portland has big league games next week at Lincoln (Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.) and at Grant (Thursday at 7:30 p.m.), who as of Friday, were one game up on Hood River. Hood River lost to both teams by one point earlier this season, including an overtime loss against Lincoln. HRV boys tennis defeats The Dalles, 5-3 In what coach Jon Hiatt described as a “blustery day,” the HRV boys tennis team had a competitive outing in The Dalles, winning 5- 3, with five of eight matches going to third sets. Goldendale Horizon competed in Goldendale on Monday against Goldendale High School, losing to the Wolves, 197-221, in a 9-hole match. Alex Tran had Horizon’s best varsity score, shooting a 49, followed by Ian Walker (54), Mason Bloomster (57), and Zachery Walker (61). The Nobi’s dynasty team re- turned in force to win the league again as they have so many times in the past. This season, Nobi’s dominated by winning both the first and second rounds and as a result, there is no playoff for the title in this league. Nobi’s takes the title outright. Milo fired scratch 223 and 203 games in the Industri- al, finishing his set 105 pins over his average. This is his second appearance on the big five. Next, Pat Olson was sim- ply spectacular in the tough Wednesday night Fraternal League where he tossed his 17th career perfect 300 game. Onlookers report that every one of his twelve strikes in a row were perfect pocket hits. What an incredi- ble number, 17 perfectos, can you believe anybody can be that good at this game? Pat went on to notch a spiffy scratch 739 series that was 91 pins over his average, making the classy crew for the second time this season. Ken Ingram gets the third spot based on his solid outing in the Thurs- day afternoon Lads & Lassies League. Ken logged a fine scratch 211 game and finished his series 90 pins over his av- erage. This is Ken’s first-ever appearance on the team of the week. Randy Nieto grabs the fourth slot based on his fine effort in the Industri- al. This is his fourth appear- ance on the fab five. Getting the anchor on the vaunted five is Roger Montavon who had a great showing in the Fraternal where he notched a near perfect 299 game. “Sarge” had a nervy 10th frame, getting the first two strikes on high hits but his 12th and final ball went wide, leaving the two pin.
