A8 Hood River News, Saturday, April 4, 2015 EAGLES Continued from Page A7 lighted the play of senior Kam Walker, who he said pitched “very well,” giving up one run and two hits over six innings, while striking out six batters. He also scored HRV’s only run of the evening. Walker didn’t pitch on Wednesday, but had a good day behind the plate, sin- gling twice and g etting walked twice in four at-bats. Harjo said that starting with Tuesday’s game, Walker got on base eight times in as many at-bats. Senior Ryan Ward also had an impressive outing, lead- ing the team with three hits in four at bats and scoring two runs. Ward was also credited with a win on the mound, striking out nine Gladiator batters in five in- nings and allowing two hits in what Harjo described as “an excellent pitching per- formance.” Harjo also highlighted the play of senior Riley Van Hoose, who had a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh inning, getting the win for HRV and preventing the game from heading into extra innings. “Riley Van Hoose has worked extremely hard, and it’s paying off for him,” Harjo noted. HRV led the game with three runs in the first in- ning, then gave up two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, resulting in a score of 3-3 going into the seventh be- fore Van Hoose delivered the coup de grace to the Gladia- tors. Harjo said HRV was ef- fective at making solid plays as they game’s score tight- ened up, which helped the Eagles get the win. “We just kept trying to make routine plays on de- fense and put good at bats to- gether,” he explained. “A huge momentum changer was when Ryan Ward threw (a) rocket to Montana Kura- hara on a relay from the right field wall to gun down the go-ahead run for Glad- stone. We took that momen- tum and energy into the bot- tom of the inning.” HRV was next scheduled to play at Summit on Friday at 5:30 p.m.; results were not available because the game started after deadline. HRV then heads to Wilsonville on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. game. Photo By Ben Mitchell KAM WALKER throws a pitch during Tuesday’s game against Redmond. The senior struck out six bat- ters on Tuesday, and has gotten on base eight consecutive times over two games this week. Daniel, almost had enough firepower to get his team the win with big-time scratch 266 and 257 games that culminated in a fine scratch 712 series. Second-round win- ner Hood River Sup- ply just squeaked by Your Rental Center, 15.5 to 14.5, thanks to a super effort by Pat Olson, who rolled a huge scratch 740 se- By JEFF OLSON ries. Spurred on by Jesse Flores and Wally Jaksha, Randy’s Painting smashed the higher seed and third-round win- ners, Buntings, 24.5 to 5.5 points; last year’s champs and first-round winners, 3 Fingers Deep, beat Hire Elec- tric 18 to 12, even though Hire’s all-star lefty, Greg Mc- Woody Eskildsen, +178 (829); Lynn Spellman, +136 (793); Sue Spellman, +117 (687); Bernie Keys, +116 (692); Matt Hodges, + 83 (729); 3,730 total pins with handicap Last week’s league action produced another remark- able team of the week. Top- ping everybody and making the big five for the fourth time this season was Your Rental Center’s main man, Woody Eskildsen, who pum- meled the pins in the Wednesday night Fraternal League with a nice scratch 667 series. Woody finished this outing a whopping 178 pins over his average. Next is Lynn Spellman who was simply brilliant in the Wednesday afternoon Colts & Fillies where he fired a huge scratch 748 series. That sparkling effort was 136 pins over his average and it marks the fifth time he’s made the fab five this season. That ties him with the leg- endary Len Hickman for the most appearances on the team of the week this season. This is also another first — in fact it’s two firsts in one: Sue Spellman nabbed the third spot after crunch- ing the sticks in the Tuesday morning ladies Workshirk- ers League with a scratch 200 game and 570 series which was 117 pins over her aver- age. This is the first time Sue has made the team of the week and it’s the first time we’ve ever had a husband and wife on the same star- ring five. Getting the clean-up slot is all-star Bernie Keys, who re- ally had it all together in the same session where she fired a beautiful scratch 608 series that was highlighted by solid scratch 215 and 213 games. Bernie was 116 pins over her average. Lanky Matt Hodges grabbed the anchor spot on this super squad after rolling a fine scratch 655 series in the Wednesday night Frater- nal League. Matt’s pro-style big high backswing enabled him to go 83 pins over his av- erage for his night’s work. Great bowling everybody!
