www.hoodrivernews.com Hood River News, Saturday, April 4, 2015 Opportunity Connections holds annual dinner April 10 Opportunity Connections (OC), will celebrate 48 years as an organization providing support services to people with disabilities in the Mid Columbia with an Anniver- sary Dinner, Friday, April 10 at the Mid Columbia Senior Center in The Dalles. The event is open to the public. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the event runs until 7 p.m. with a taco feed, silent auction and raffle items. Tickets are $10 for adults and $ 5 for children 12 and under. Tickets are available at the door. Besides a chance to catch up with friends, at the An- niversary Dinner, Opportuni- ty Connections will honor those businesses, volunteers, and participants that have promoted community inte- gration and support for peo- ple with disabilities in the last year. This year awards will go to the Safeway in both Hood River and The Dalles, who have hired people with dis- abilities, in memory of LeRoy Nickelson, a tireless volun- teer at fundraisers, Charlie Hess, a donor supporter of the Art Connect program in The Dalles and the soon to be “The 506 Gallery” at 506 East 2nd St., The Dalles, a client participant Herbie Schmoker, who volunteers at the WAAAM program in Hood River, and Lisa Woodside, a client participant who reads to the Head Start Program in The Dalles. Each one of these organizations and individu- als have advanced communi- ty integration for those with intellectual disabilities in multiple ways, from allowing Opportunity Connections staff to work with clients at employment locations, to tire- lessly supporting the OC mis- sion, “Maximizing Potential for People with Disabilities.” OC has recently begun to transform its services from a provider of jobs, to a finder of community jobs in the Gorge area. While maintaining commercial operations in both The Dalles and Hood River, OC now has added an active employment service for people with disabilities look- ing for community employ- ment. They also provide Resi- dential services including both support for people living independently and group home services. The organiza- tion generates over 2.4 million dollars into Mid-Columbia businesses through staff wages, renting homes, shop- ping at stores, buying and leasing vehicles, as well as helping people do some of the fun things that make life en- joyable. Opportunity Connections is funded through a number of sources, including state Medicaid funding for staffing support, commercial revenue from janitorial, document de- struction contracts (Gorge Se- cure Shred) and some assem- bly revenue. The majority of fundraising proceeds are used to keep folks out in their own communities. Valley Worship Center The community is invited to attend Valley Worship Cen- ter’s Easter celebration events on Sunday, April 5 at 5780 Hwy. 35 in Mt. Hood. A free Easter Sunday breakfast will be served at 10 a.m., fol- lowed by the Easter Celebra- tion Service at 10:45 a.m. with Pastor Don Howell. Beginning on Easter Sun- day evening, the Bible based TV series “AD” TV series will begin on NBC from 8 to 9 p.m. and will continue for twelve weeks. During this time, Pas- tor Howell’s Sunday morning sermons will reflect on the subject of each week’s TV episode and everyone is welcome to attend these ser- vices. Easter egg hunt planned The annual Community Easter Egg Hunt held each year on the Saturday morn- ing before Easter at Jackson Park is going to bigger and better than ever. Sponsored by the Columbia Gorge Fel- lowship of Churches, this free family fun Easter week- end event was enjoyed by over 750 kids last year. We will be hiding over 8,000 plas- tic eggs this year. Along with the fun of hunting for eggs hidden in the tall grass of the park, every child ages 1-10 will receive an Easter goodie bag filled with candy, prizes, and stickers. The Easter Bunny will be ready for hugs and photos with the kids. Due to the limited space of the park, we are making this year’s egg hunt even safer for the little ones and will do everything possible to assure a fun, safe and memorable ex- perience for everyone. A safety fair will begin at 10 a.m.; the hunt will start at 11, rain or shine. The community is also in- vited to our sponsoring churches stuff over 800 East- er goodie bags with candy, prizes, and stickers and tape together thousands of plastic eggs on Wednesday, April 1st at Immanuel Lutheran, 9th & State, from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. The more help the better!
