www.hoodrivernews.com Hood River News, Wednesday, March 4, 2015 ENTERTAINMENT U pdate ‘Two for One’: CAST offers pair of one acts Columbia Center for the Arts presents an evening of two classic one acts — Harold Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter, and James McLure’s Laundry & Bourbon, opening Friday. Both are essentially comedies of manners: how do people with tensions and interpersonal issues relate to each other in settings and situations that are typically human and at the same time unconventional? The Dumb Waiter is a funny and intriguing story of two British hit men as they wait in a basement for their next as- signment. Ben, the senior partner of the gunmen, is a “com- pany man” who does his job and never questions his assign- ments. Gus, haunted by the memory of their last job, knows that something is wrong when their normally flawless rou- tine is interrupted by some mysterious happenings — a sealed envelope suddenly appears under the door, and then more messages start arriving by way of the dumb waiter in- cluding strange lists of food orders. Told through Pinter’s unmistakable wit and set in an atmosphere of mystery and menace, The Dumb Waiter is considered the best of Harold Pinter’s early plays. David Dye and Ray Abanto sit in a base- ment room and talk and argue … and wait. In James McLure’s hilarious Laundry & Bourbon, the ac- tion centers on the discontent and gossip of three small-town wives whose marriages have turned out to be less than was hoped for. Set in Maynard, Texas, on a hot summer after- noon, Elizabeth and her friend Hattie while away the time folding laundry, watching TV, sipping bourbon and Coke, and gossiping about the many open secrets which are so much a part of small-town life. They are joined by the self-righteous Amy Lee who, among other tidbits, can’t resist blurting out that Elizabeth’s husband Roy has been seen around town with another woman. But Elizabeth has a secret of her own in this funny and touching comedy. Lisa Roth, Barb Berry and Desiree Amyx-Mackintosh match wits in this one. Marina Way; 541-386-2200. ‘New Wasco Bros.’ March 7 Honkabilly returns to the Gorge, Saturday, March 7, at Double Mountain Brewery starting at 9 p.m. “The New Wasco Bros. are a revival of the mix of alt- country and straight rock once described as “Ray Price fronting The Attractions”. The Wasco Bros. 2008 album “Jackknife” is a soulful mix of original music some- where along the line of song writers like Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson and John Fogerty.” Double Mountain Brewery, 8 Fourth St., Hood River; 541-387-0042. Pigs on the Wing March 7 The Bingen Theater welcomes Pink Floyd tribute cover band Pigs on the Wing on Saturday, March 7. Since 2006 Pigs on the Wing has been delivering “spellbinding musical experiences” to a wide-range of audiences in the Northwest. For this show the band will be performing the entire Dark Side of the Moon album while syncing video from the classic movie “The Wizard of Oz.” According to some sources, “a number of apparent synchronicities present themselves” during playback of these two entities. Expect a second set of classic Pink Floyd to round out the evening. Doors open at 8 p.m., 21+ only Tickets are $10 advance/ $13 day of show. Irish fiddler Lucia Comnes plays concert March 8 An acoustic house concert with Irish fiddler Lucia Comnes and Daniel Carr is scheduled for Sunday, March 8, at 7 p.m. at 401 Montello Ave, in Hood River. Suggested donation is $15. Comnes leads a San Francisco-based band that delivers “hair-raising vocal harmonies, soul- shaking harmonica solos, fierce melodies on the fiddle and danceable jigs and reels.” Call Paul Blackburn at 541- 387-4011 to reserve a seat. Tony Smiley plays Pint Shack One man band Tony Smiley returns to Hood River on Saturday, March 7, from 8:30-10:30 p.m. at the Pint Shack in Hood River. The Pint Shack, 105 Fourth St., Hood River; 541-387-7600. ‘Heroes not Welcome Home’ exhibit opens March 14 Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum pre- sents “What if Heroes Were Not Welcome Home?” Satur- day, March 14. The exhibit opening features a Culture a la Carte evening of dining followed by a presentation by author Linda Tamura. This poignant exhibit examines the experience of Japanese American veterans upon their return home after serving in World War II. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner served at 6, with the 7 p.m. pre- sentation at the Discovery Center, 5000 Discovery Drive, in The Dalles. Reservations required by March 11. Two family films of note ■ May Street students may enjoy the hit 2014 animated film “Big Hero 6” on March 6 at 6 p.m. Cost is $5 for stu- dent drop-off; parents must return by 8 p.m. Water and popcorn will be sold for 50 cents; bring pillows and blan- kets to sit on. ■ All ages are welcome for “Cinderella” at Hood River Cinemas for its “sensory friendly” series, 9:30 a.m. on March 14. Lights are turned slightly up and volume slightly down. Cost is $5 per person. Mark Womble and friends play The Dalles Eagles Mark Womble and friends will be playing at The Dalles Eagles Lodge, March 7, from 7 to 11 p.m. Featuring Polly Norris on vocals, guitar and banjo; Dennis Williams on saxophone and clarinet; Mike DeMello on pedal steel and vocals; Mike Mutton on lead guitar and vocals; Paul Viemeister on bass, and Jose Maya on drums. The Dalles Eagles Lodge is located at 2006 W 7th St. and features the largest dance floor in the Columbia Gorge. There is a cover charge of $3 for members and $4 for non-members. Rocket is about 8 months old, 15 pounds, and is awe- some, dude! He’s super spunky and playful and has all the right moves down. He started out a shy wallflower, just wishin’ and hopin’ and thinkin’ and prayin’ that someone would notice him and just pick him up, for good- ness sakes! And once that hap- pened, he got his groove thang goin’ on and Rocket turned into a fetching machine. He knows how to go for it! I just love watching that boy run! He’s gotten some leashed walks under his belt, and gets to meet lots of new friends in the neighborhood, so his days are filled with excitement and fun. Rocket is still a puppy and Rocket needs a patient home willing to help him with that whole house-training thing. And he’s a snuggler and lap warmer, so ya gotta put up with that! And he’s got energy, so reg- ular exercise would be nice ... and tennis balls! Now that he’s discovered fetch, he kind of insists on his new home tak- ing up the sport, too! Rocket is current on shots, microchipped and will be neutered next week. The adop- tion fee for Rocket is $200. The fee to adopt is charged to re- coup standard veterinary ex- penses.
