www.hoodrivernews.com Hood River News, Saturday, February 28, 2015 K RISTI Continued from Page A1 When she was approached last spring by VanOrman to serve, her first reaction was, “We have two weddings this summer, and a campaign going on … I don’t know if I can.” She soon changed her mind. “That center is a commu- nity jewel and you can’t af- ford to lose it,” Thomsen said. The board hopes to add, maintain and expand its list- ing of programs and ser- vices, from the existing Meals on Wheels to future flu shot clinics. “We’ve got a lot of plans and hopes,” she said. “We’re getting there.” The group meets about once a week — current pro- jects include writing policies and procedures. But she’s at the Adult Center almost daily, helping write the newsletter or volunteering in the kitchen on Tuesday Bingo nights. Board mem- bers are often onsite to an- swer questions and volun- teer as needed. The center is “run by do- nations and volunteers, and we need both, badly,” Thom- sen said. Both volunteer and donation for ms can be picked up at the center, and she hopes new volunteers will get involved. Thomsen has many years of previous board experi- ence, from the Pine Grove United Methodist Church in the early 1980s to an “on and off ” position at Head Start while her daughters were in school. She also served on the Columbia Area Transit (CAT) Board, and local and site committees — and the PTA — at Pine Grove Ele- mentary and Wy’east Middle School. Of course, as the wife of a four th g eneration or- chardist, Thomsen has farm- ing experience, too. “When we were first married, I would go out smudging with him at night, or check bins with him during harvest. Of course, when we had kids, I still checked bins for quite a while,” she said. The couple has 170 acres of pear trees — mainly Anjous and Bartletts, with a few Boscs — and Chuck brings boxes of pears with him wherever he goes. “Chuck always takes a box of pears every week to Salem … His office is popular be- cause he’s got pears,” she said. “He’ll often take boxes of pears to communities he’s going to visit. He does haul fruit along with him and passes it out.” Thomsen feels lucky to have been able to stay at home with daughters Mea- gan, now 31 (“You can blame Chuck for that,” she said of the spelling, noting he want- ed it spelled like “Reagan”) P ORT Continued from Page A1 county records, the real mar- ket value of the parcel is list- ed at $68,750. Proposed toll increases In other port news, discus- sions were had last week about potential toll increases on the Bridge of the Gods. Koch said 25 cent, 50 cent, and $1 increases were dis- cussed, but noted that “the commission decided they were not going to take any formal action at this time.” Under the port’s 10-year maintenance and operations plan, the port commission is required to review the bridge’s tolls on an annual basis in an attempt to ensure sufficient funding for the port’s Bridge Preservation, Repair and Replacement fund. Last year, the port com- mission voted to raise the toll on trucks with three axles or more from $1 per axle to $1.50 per axle. Howev- er, tolls on passenger vehi- cles — currently at $1 — were not raised and accord- and Mallory, 28. She received her teaching degree from Washington State University and taught first grade in Goldendale before moving to Pine Grove. And while she periodically subbed for the Hood River County School District, her first priority was home. “I guess I always thought, ‘well, somebody has to stay home and take care of stuff and you go do your thing,’” she said. Although there is still farm work to do while Chuck in in Salem, Thomsen credits foreman Alfredo Elisea and great year-round workers, as well as brother-in-law Tom Ewald, for keeping the farm running. Meagan, a nurse, keeps the books, although Chuck still does a f air amount of that, even when he’s in session, Thomsen said. During last year’s cam- paign, her responsibilities included editing all cam- paign material — door knocker cards, fliers, even the voter’s pamphlet. “I edit everything they write or send out — I hope — because I’m the education background,” she said. She’s also particular about how things are phrased. “I’m the one that’s picky about how you phrase things. What’s your stance? It needs to be clear. People need to un- derstand what you’ve done, what you want to do, how you want to do it,’” she ex- plained. One surprising aspect of their relationship: The two are not of the same political party. Still, they respect each other’s philosophies. “What’s funny, it started when he was a (Hood River County Planning Commis- sioner), he would have peo- ple he wanted to support dur- ing elections, I would have people I wanted to support during elections, so we would put up both signs on the lawn, or we’d have one in the orchard and one in the lawn,” she said. And it’s a positive during campaign season. “I think I also offered a dif- ferent perspective, being a nonaffiliated,” she said. “I would watch and listen, and tell these Republican guys, ‘okay, wait, if you’re sending material to just Re- publicans, you can send this and this. If you’re trying to appeal to people in the mid- dle … you need to be aware of how people in the middle think about whatever this issue is.’ “They might look at some- thing one way, and I’d say, ‘here’s how I might see it as a nonaffiliated, here’s my view and perspective.’ So it was interesting campaigning, for me, and probably for them. But you know, your con- stituents are made up of everybody. You have Republi- cans and Democrats and In- dependents and nonaffiliat- eds, and you represent all of them.” ing to News archives, have not been raised since Jan. 1, 2003. Koch said the port plans to have at least one meeting on the issue in order to gather public input regarding po- tential toll increases, but that meeting date has not yet been set. If a toll increase is ap- proved, the changes would likely go into effect this May.
