A8 Hood River News, Saturday, February, 14, 2015 Youth wrestlers bing home state hardware A selection of Hood River’s toughest young wrestlers were in Parkrose last weekend for the 2015 Oregon Wrestling Associa- tion Kids State Folkstlye Championships. After the full day of wrestling, eight local boys found them- selves on the podium and two were hailed state cham- pions. Noah Wa ch s m u t h claimed his fifth straight state folkstyle title, this year in the Schoolboy 105 pound division, while his brother, Jeremiah, claimed his second straight title in the Intermediate 50 pound class. Representing Elite Edge Wrestling Academy out of Hood River were six podi- um finishers, highlighted by runners-up Tysen Baker, Cole Cantrell, John- B OWL Continued from Page A7 l e a g u e a c t i o n at H o o d River’s Orchard Lanes. He started in the Monday night Industrial league by rolling a mighty fine scratch 639 se- ries that was capped by a nice 246 game. That effort was 96 pins over his aver- age. Then, in the Wednes- day afternoon senior Colts and Fillies league, he fash- ioned a solid scratch 619 set, which was 85 pins over his average. Apparently, just getting war med up, Len saved his best performance for last. In the Wednesday evening Fraternal league he really got hot, notching a huge scratch 287 game and finishing up with a super scratch 672 series which was 141 pins over his aver- age, the most at the lanes last week. Joyce Ebersole has also been on a roll lately. She T EAM Continued from Page A7 ny Garcia and Jason Shan- er. Her left handed slants stayed on the money last week and she didn’t miss this time, beat- ing her average by 112 pins in the Colts and Fillies to take the second spot on the team of the week. Randy Nieto takes the third slot on our fab five this week after a sterling outing in the Industrial where he painted the town with a lofty scratch 656 set that was 107 pins over his average. It’s always a pleasure to welcome a new face to star- dom and that’s just what we’re going to do now for Rita Schneeberg. Rita was a strike machine, terminating the ten pins with her every shot on her way to a beauti- ful scratch 213 game in the Thursday County league last week. She ended up 87 pins over her average for the three game session, good enough to grab the clean-up spot on the team of STATE CHAMPS (above, from left) Je- remiah and Noah Wachsmuth pose after winning state wrestling titles in their divisions last weekend. At left, HRVHS freshman Jason Shaner finished second at the tourna- ment. Submitted photos the week. And, finally, how about this for an anomaly, Nancy Asai, one of our best women bowlers made the team of the week for the first time this season after splashing the sticks with her usual tal- ented aplomb in the Tues- day Nite Mixed lea gue. sive) led by Buckley with six and Kaydin Gibbs, Tyrone Stintzi and Scottie Ziegner with four each. Noah Note- boom had a game-high five assists and Austin Clarke had four to help break up Her miston’s defense and create scoring opportuni- ties, while the team shot 50- percent (7-14) from three- point range, led by Hunter who was four for six and Buckley who was two for two. Areas of improvement were accentuated in the final quarter, when Hermis- ton went on a run to cut their deficit from more than 20 down to just ten. “During the fourth quar- ter we talked about better ball movement and eating up more of the clock,” Note- boom said. “I don’t feel like we did a very good job of that. We took quick shots and our defense was lack- ing. We allowed Hermiston to get to the basket, which Nancy notched a sparkling scratch 663 set that was 84 pins over her average to grab the anchor slot on our big five. It’s much more dif- ficult for our high average bowlers to beat their aver- ages by a margin g reat enough to make the team of the week. Apr. 18th Jan. 5 pm 1pm 7th or · 6pm we had not allowed the first three quarters.” After Friday’s game at The Dalles (results unavail- able as of press time) the Ea- gles are on the road next week at Pendleton Tuesday and Hermiston Thursday for what will likely be the team’s most important week of the season. As of this week, the conference title is still very much up for grabs, a n d w i t h t h e t o p t h re e schools in the conference earning spots in the play- offs, HRV is all but guaran- teed its first post-season ap- pearance in many years.
