www.hoodrivernews.com Presidents Day closures HR Pool will be open Sunday and Monday Monday is a federal holiday observed by schools, banks and some businesses. Schools are out for the day, and government of- fices will be closed. Hood River Library branches will be closed. There will be no Unit- ed States Postal Service delivery on Monday. Hood River News of- fices will be open regular hours. Hood River Pool will be closed all day Saturday, Feb. 14 for the Columbia River Conference district meet. The pool will reopen for nor mal business hours on Feb 15 at 10 a.m. It’s time for the Hood River News, Saturday, February 14, 2015 The Aquatic Center will be open Monday for a special open $1 swim from 1-3:30 p.m. The slide, rope swing, basketball hoop will be open, and the party room is avail- able for rental. Swim lesson registra- tion is underway. You can now register online at hoodriver parksan- drec.org, or you can reg- ister in person at the Aquatic Center. New classes are being added to accommodate full class- es. aged by the U.S. Forest Service, as well as by the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Reclamation. This fee waiver applies to day-use fees at Forest Service recreation sites across Oregon and Wash- ington. This includes many picnic areas, boat launches, trailheads and visitor centers. Concession operations will continue to charge fees unless the permit holder wishes to partici- pate. Fees for camping, cabin rentals, heritage expeditions, or other per- mits will not be waived. For more information on specific fee sites, call your local national forest or visit their website through www.fs.usda.gov. ■ USFS fee waiver — Day-use fees at most U.S. Forest Service recreation sites will be waived on Monday, Feb 16, to cele- brate Presidents Day. The administrative fee waiver of recreation-use fees applies annually on Presidents Day at public recreation lands man- Elks Lodge names Bell, McLean January students of the month Joy Bell and Lucy McLean have been selected as Janu- ary Students of the Month by the Hood River Elks Lodge and were presented $100 checks at a recent Lodge meeting. Both are seniors at Hood River Valley High School. They, along with the other monthly winners, will be honored at a banquet on May 31 of this year. A13 52nd Annual Hood River News Subscription Campaign OPEN TO ALL KIDS & TEENS AGES 10-16 ■ Joy Bell is an honor roll student who is very self-mo- tivated and someone who has strong leadership skills. She was a former player on the lacrosse team and a member of the HRVHS student panel for hiring new principals. She is also a member of the Health Media Club that fo- cuses on improving the health and welfare in the community and a member of SOAR (Students of Apt Readiness), which helps make middle school students aware of what their high school experience will be like. Joy is very involved with the Leos organization and she has done various activi- ties, such as selling snacks at Movies in the Park, raising money for the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, volun- teering at the local FISH food bank and selling cookies at the Lions Follies show. She has also sold food at a HRVHS play, helped back- stage at a fashion show, helped with the Hood River food bank and organized bot- tles and cans for the Recy- cling for the Community group. In 2014, she was one of five students selected to attend the International Lions Con- vention in Toronto, Ontario. Other projects include sort- ing cans and bottles at Rosauers and being part of the school canned food drive. With the Leadership for Tomorrow group, she gave out hot chocolate and cook- ies at the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony and also during the Christmas season, she and others bought presents and gifted them to families that other- wise could not afford them. Joy is the daughter of Van Joy Bell Lucy McLean Miley and Michelle Bell. This coming fall, Joy will at- tend a four year university and major in business and will then go on to attain an MBA in international busi- ness. She would like to pur- sue a career in international relations. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and cook- ing. helped sort, box and deliver food to needy families in the community. The Challenge Day Club, which creates a safe environment for young kids, and Link Crew leader were two other groups that she has helped with. She has volunteered at two high school soccer camps, where she was a coach and mentor for 4-12 year olds and helped them with their soccer skills. Lucy has also volunteered at high school and middle school track meets, helping as a timer and to run the event. Lucy is the daughter of George and Kathy McLean and has an older sister, Mad- die, a sophomore at Bates College in Maine. Later this year, she will en- roll in a four year university. She is undecided about what career path she would like to pursue. Other interests in- clude reading, shipping and working at Mike’s Ice Cream. ■ Lucy McLean is a high achiever and is very involved in a number of various activ- ities. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has challeng ed herself throughout high school by taking many honors and ad- vanced placement classes. Lucy was a high school champion ski racer in 2012 and an individual league champion from 2012-2014. In 2014, she was a second place finisher in skier cross at Stake, won the most valu- able skier award in 2014 and was on the league champion team in 2012, 2013 and 2014. She was a member of the ju- nior varsity track team her freshman and sophomore years and has been other var- sity soccer team since her sophomore year. Lucy’s volunteer work in- cludes working with the Leos club, doing various activities such as recycling and help- ing with Movies in the Park. She also helps at the local FISH food bank bagging, stocking and carrying out food to customers. During the Christmas season, she G OT N EWS ?
