Ross Walk- er, 24, of Parkdale, was sitting on the north side of the north tracks at East First and Laughlin streets just before midnight Friday when he was struck by a westbound train, according to police. The Dalles Police Depart- ment reported that Walker is believed to have been talking on his phone to a friend, ask- ing him for a ride, when he was hit by the train. The friend reported that the phone call ended abruptly and he tried calling Walker back about 14 times. At the scene of the acci- dent, Walker’s phone, battery and phone back were found in three different spots near him. He was also knocked out of his shoes by the impact, the report said. He sustained a broken pelvis, some broken ribs, a large flesh wound to his right thigh and bleeding on the brain, according to the re- port. The Dalles Police Capt. Steve Baska said, in his 29 years on the force, he can re- count perhaps six incidents where a train hit a person or vehicle, and most were fatal. He said “it’s a miracle” Walker wasn’t killed. Baska said officers heard Monday morning that Walker had surgery on his pelvis and was already home recuperating. Police had to climb over the train to get to Walker. The train came to a stop about five rail cars beyond where the man was hit, the report stated. One officer noted in his re- port that the train conductor “was pretty shaken from the incident.” The report stated the con- ductor “blew the horn and tried to stop, doing all he could, but Walker never looked up or moved, and was struck.” Police learned Walker had been cut off from being served alcohol at the Vault Bistro & Lounge in down- town The Dalles about 11 p.m. He was hit about an hour later. A bartender at the Vault told police she conferred with another bartender on whether or not to cut off Walker, who, she told offi- cers, “appeared to be falling asleep” while sitting at the bar. They cut him off, saying he could stay at the bar, but Head Start accepting applications for fall Mid-Columbia Children’s Council’s Head Start program is now accepting applications for fall classes from families with children who will be 3 or 4 before Sept. 1. Applications are also being accepted for the Early Head Start program which serves pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years old. Our program is designed to enhance a child’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physi- cal development, as well as promote family strength — and it’s free. All families are encouraged to apply. Mid-Columbia Head Start serves the areas of Hood River, Pine Grove, Parkdale, The Dalles, Maupin, Madras, Stevenson, White Salmon, Klickitat, Goldendale, and Wishram. Applications are available at your local Head Start Cen- ter, library, Health Depart- ment and DHS, by calling Mid- Columbia Children’s Council, Inc. at 541-386-2010, or at www.mcccheadstart.org. Happy 40th Birthday “Still rockin Jeremy after all these years!!” Love Ya, Mom & Dad only drink non-alcoholic beverages. When police found him, his hand had the red circle stamp of the Vault, plus a large black “x” on it, indicat- ing he was cut off, according to police reports. The police report noted that a security guard at the Vault caught Walker trying to finish beer in a pitcher left by another patron. Walker asked the security guard if he had to leave. The security guard said no, then offered to call him a cab. Walker refused and left. Walker is on probation for possession of heroin and is barred from consuming alco- hol. The police sent a message to his probation officer about the incident, but did not charge him with a probation violation. Baska said Walker’s alco- hol level was not tested. He was taken to Mid-Columbia Medical Center, then to Ore- gon Health Science Universi- ty, reports stated. The police report was for- warded to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission.
