A8 Hood River News, Saturday, January 31, 2015 W INNERS! Sign-ups open for Babe Ruth, HR Little League Hood River Volleyball Club’s U14 team made a big statement earlier this month as it com- peted in its first Columbia Empire Volleyball Association tournament. The team, com- prised of girls from around the valley, went undefeated in 12 games to win the tourna- ment. This is the first year the club has joined the Portland-area CEVA league; the team will play six more tournaments with the league this season, which runs from January to March. Pictured are (back to front, left to right) Coach Suzie Preston, Madison James, Hannah McNerney, Emily Curtis, Abby Bar- tles, Bailey Frazier, Haylee Baker, Elena Kroll, assistant coach Tonia Carter, (front) Haley Hughes, Kennedy James and Emilie Ellifritz. ■ For Babe Ruth, players can register every Wednes- day night at the Hood River Valley High School indoor hitting facility (next to HRV baseball’s home field) from 7:30-9 p.m. A copy of your player’s birth certificate is needed at registration. The fee this year is $90. For more information e-mail David Hough at: Yzhough@yahoo.com. ■ For HRV Little League K LEEWAY S TOKED! R ESULTS Continued from Page A7 Individual highlights are below. That effort put Terry 129 pins over his average for the session. Just how good is that? Well, all-star Gordon Sim, one of the best bowlers in town, put together a prodigious scratch 756 series in the same session, which just happened to also be 129 pins over his average. The smooth Mr. Sim, with the textbook style, knocked out a lofty 288 game in his big series. He also shot a scratch 704 series in the Thursday afternoon senior Lads & Lassies league. Gor- don was the only bowler in town who climbed over the magical scratch 700 series mark last week. It takes a cool, confident and very competent customer to shoot a scratch series over 750. Lumberyard Party Continued from Page A7 Hood River Valley High School wrestler Ian Rand shows the glare of victory Wednesday night after picking up a third-round fall against his Hermiston opponent. Rand trailed the whole match but outlasted his opponent and turned the tide in the final round for the pin. The Eagles weren’t quite as successful in the dual against the de- fending state champion Bulldogs, but they put up a good fight. Jessica DeHart, Jason Shaner, Jorge Ortega and Rand won for HRV, while the other ten matches went to Hermiston. HRV continued its busy week of competi- tion with a home dual Friday night against Mountain View and the all-day Hood River Elks Memorial tournament Saturday. 100 butterfly: Dhani Freeland, 1st, 1:01.16; Kylie Webb, 3rd, 1:02.46; Yas- meen Ziada, 7th, 1:12.89 500 freestyle: Courtney Castaneda, 2nd, 6:00.42; Jocelyn Pedrotti, 4th, 6:34.13 100 backstroke: Dhani Freeland, 1st, 1:01.60; Allison Burke, 6th, 1:11.57 100 breaststroke: Kylie Webb, 1st, 1:13.20; Erin Sutherland, 8th, 1:26.77 400 freestyle relay: 1st, Kylie Webb, Caitlyn Fick, Allson Burke, Dhani Freeland, 3:57.22; 3rd, Jocelyn Pedrot- ti, Courtney Castaneda, Yasmeen Ziada, Erin Sutherlan, 4:23.39 HRV boys Team top five: 1st La Grande (422.5), 2nd Pendleton (378), 3rd Hood River (333), 4th Reynolds, 295), 5th Madras (182) 200 medley relay: 2nd, David Walker, Stan Ockeskey, Carlos Galvez, Trey That’s a perfect description of Mr. Sim. Carl Casey is definitely in the zone and he’s no stranger to big numbers. Carl has a long and impres- sive resume of top scores in this great game. He’s so quiet and unassuming you hardly know he’s there, but when the dust settles you’ll always find Carl in the thick of the battle. Carl grabs the clean-up slot on our fab five after rolling nifty scratch 267 and 235 games on his way to a solid 684 series in the Monday night Industrial league which was 114 pins over his average. This marks the fourth time that the easy going Mr. Casey has made the team of the week this season — the most by any- body in town! Quinton rolled a nice 210 game in his series. This is Quinton’s third ap- pearance on the fab five this season. He’s clearly been bit- ten by the bowling bug after sparking his 3 Fingers Deep team to the Industrial league title last season; he’s bowling three leagues this season. Last week he was 100 pins over his av- erage in the Fraternal after firing solid scratch 231 and 214 games on his way to a fine 616 series. Zach has to be on the short list for most improved bowler in town. Great bowling everybody!
