www.hoodrivernews.com Hood River News, Saturday, January 31, 2015 Graham helps lead national 4-H event Madison Graham Madison Graham, a senior at Hood River Valley High School, is one of eight youth in the nation to be selected for the 2015 Nation- al 4-H Congress Design Team. Graham and fellow senior Pay- ton Rigert, as two year State 4-H Ambassadors of Oregon, attend- ed the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Ga., in November, along with a delegation from each state. They were chosen last spring through an extensive application and interview process. After attending, youth have one opportunity to apply for the National 4-H Congress Design Team by submitting a lengthy ap- plication to the State 4-H Office. Each state is allowed to nominate three applicants to be selected at the national level. Graham will join the seven other youth in leading the 2015 National 4-H Congress in Novem- ber of 2015. This is a diverse team com- posed of eight youth from across the United States who will spend the year designing, planning and organizing the next National 4-H Congress. Graham will fly to the National 4-H Congress Headquarters in At- lanta at the end of February to meet the Design Team and begin planning the future National 4-H Congress. The rest of the year will consist of regular teleconfer- ence meetings in order to plan an impacting leadership experience for youth across the nation. Susan Stewart of Georgia is the Executive Director of the Na- tional 4-H Congress, and Doug Hart of Oregon State University will be the Program Chair for this year’s National 4-H Con- g r e s s, a l o n g w i t h C o - C h a i r Rachel Lyons of Rutgers Univer- sity. Also on the 2015 Design Team are students from Wisconsin, In- diana, Oklahoma, Colorado, Mis- sissippi, New Jersey and Penn- sylvania. W ORSHIP D IRECTORY ASSEMBLY OF GOD Submitted photo GREG WALDEN, right, speaks, as State Rep. Mark Johnson listens during the meeting at NDI. Walden listens to immigration pleas in Next Door visit U.S. Rep. Greg Walden lis- tened to several Hood River residents as they told about how they came to the U.S., how current immigration laws affect them, and what they would like him to do to help improve their lives and strengthen our community. Walden (R-Hood River) met with several Latino business owners, a high school stu- dent, and representatives from Gorge Ecumenical Min- istries, Nuestra Comunidad Sana (a program of The Next Door), and Radio Tierra. Hood River County Sheriff Matt English, State Rep. Mark Johnson and other community leaders also at- tended. Humberto Calderon spoke about his early years living in Hood River and working in the orchards. He is now owner of El Patrillo, a cloth- ing business in Hood River, and pays $40,000 in taxes each year. He expressed his discon- tent with current immigra- tion policies, referring to re- cent years when fruit fell to the ground because workers were not available to harvest. A student from Hood River Valley High School shared her story of being brought to the U.S. when she was six months old. As she talked about her prospects for edu- cation after high school, she started to cry and had diffi- culty continuing. She also commented on the recent de- feat of Measure 88, which would have provided Oregon residents a driver card with- out proving citizenship. Maria and Enrique Ortega, owners of Gorge Taxi and Lake Taco, expressed their concern over deportations that break up families. The Ortegas offer free taxi rides home for bar patrons in downtown Hood River. Sher- iff English states this service has resulted in a drastic re- duction in DUII arrests. Community leaders asked Rep. Walden to use his lead- ership role to ensure that an immigration refor m bill passes congress this year — a law that addresses the con- cerns he heard at the meet- ing and provides a meaning- ful path to citizenship for our neighbors. Walden acknowledged im- migration reform was need- ed but didn’t offer any spe- cific ideas or plans that would ease the speakers’ concerns. He did state that he believes that DACA, the executive order signed by President Obama last year, was unconstitutional. While discussing the need for more agricultural work- ers in the area, Walden ac- knowledged that “immi- grants in our community do specialty work, and con- tribute more to our economy than they detract.” He also agreed that all immigrant workers, including the un- documented, pay taxes and benefit the economy.
