Lauren Kraemer, left, Hood River County Extension Facility, led a panel presentation on domestic vio-
lence and sexual assault Jan. 15 at the Hood River Oregon State University Extension Office classroom.
Panelists represented agencies throughout the Gorge: Lori Rosenbraugh (investigator, Oregon State
Police, The Dalles), Gloria Needam (Victims’ Assistance, Hood River County DA office), Barbara Riley
(Department of Human Services Community Resource Coordinator for Wasco, Sherman, Gilliam,
Wheeler and Hood River counties), Stephanie Irving (executive director, Helping Hands against Vio-
lence) and Serra Perino (lead advocate, Helping Hands against Violence). Each panelist spoke for 10
minutes about the prevalence of domestic violence and sexual assault in the community and the roles
their respective agencies play in prevention, investigation, prosecution and victim assistance.

OSU Extension offers meal
planning class in Hood River
“Let’s Cook Up a Meal
Plan” will be offered on
Tuesday, Feb. 3 starting at 6
p.m. in the Hood River Coun-
ty Extension Annex meeting
room, 2990 Experiment Sta-
tion Dr. (turn just south of
Your Party and Rental Cen-
ter).
Do you walk through the
door at dinner time and won-
der what you’re going to pre-
pare for your hungry family?
Or maybe it’s easier to pick
up a fast food meal or indi-
vidual frozen dinner? Would
you like to make healthy
meals fast and eat dinner as
a family? “Let’s Cook Up a
Meal Plan” is a class de-
signed to help each partici-
pant create a personalized
weekly meal plan with tips
on organization, prepara-
tion, grocery shopping, and
enlisting the whole family in

meal time fun.
“I think families don’t
know how to start when it
comes to planning meal
times,” said instructor Deb-
bie McDonald. “All they need
is a simple road map to eat-
ing at home and the desire to
make it happen. This class
will start the conversation.”
Cost is $5 at the door, cash
or check; pre-registration is
advised.

A lively discussion followed amongst the 30-plus community members who squeezed into the class-
room, including what age is appropriate to talk to children about abuse and how to model healthy re-
lationships. The event was videotaped by John Hardham and will be available for those who missed
the meeting; Kraemer said links would probably be available on the Helping Hands website in Hood
River and the Haven website in The Dalles in the near future. Kraemer said that the panel was part of
the monthly Extension Service Family and Community Education Study groups. Upcoming topics in-
clude how to use leafy greens and money management; watch the News’ Happenings section for up-
coming dates and times.
