Hood Ski League, USASA comps Hood River Valley High School varsity ski team com- peted in its first giant slalom race of the season, held Sat- urday at Mt. Hood Meadows. Due to limited snow on the traditional GS courses, the race was run on Gemini, which is generally used for slalom racing. After two runs per racer, both HRV varsity boys and girls line- ups came out in first place overall and with individual champions. On the boys side, Austin Keillor posted the fastest combined time of the day and Lucy McLean led the girls. Top five finishers are as follows (times are two-run combined): Varsity boys: 1st overall (Cleveland 2nd, The Dalles 3rd) Austin Keillor, 1st, 51.48 William Lamer, 3rd, 53.16 Charlie Sutherland, 7th, 56.24 Patrick Crompton, 8th, 56.84 Mitch Lamer, 9th, 57.30 Varsity girls: 1st overall (St. Mary’s 2nd, Sandy 3rd) Lucy McLean, 1st, 52.81 Kelli Clarke, 3rd, 57.90 Claire Davies, 7th, 1:02.45 Sarah Hall, 9th, 1:03.48 Hannah Bergemann, 18th, 1:10.08 H OOPS against CRC foes Pendleton and Hermiston on the road over the next two weeks. Headed into the meat of the season, coach Noteboom is optimistic about where his lineup is, both physically and mentally. “I think the boys are excit- ed about where we’re at,” he said. “They’ve bought into the new style of play and I think they’re enjoying bas- ketball a lot more than they did last year.” The Eagles went winless last season and finished at the bottom of conference and state standings. As of Tues- day, they’re second in the CRC, with Pendleton leading with a 7-4 record and a No. 6 ranking. “They’re (Pendleton) defi- nitely the favorite,” Note- boom said. “But there’s no reason we can’t be second in the league, at least. If we can continue scoring the way we have, rebound better and not give up as many layups I think we’ ll be in g reat shape.” Continued from Page A7 out sluggish, scoring just seven points in the first quarter and falling behind 41-19 by halftime. On the re- verse, Heritage was on fire from the field and managed an impressive 14 three-point- ers by the end of the game. The Eagles finished with a solid 19-point fourth quarter, but the effort was too late to make much of a dent in their deficit. Sklyer Hunter and Dan Kuechmann chipped in with nine points and Andrew Roberts scored 8 to lead the team in scoring. “We weren’t closing out very well and they were,” Noteboom said. “I think play- ing back-to-back like that hinders us a bit too.” After a home game this Friday against Stevenson (7 p.m. Vannet Court), the Ea- gles will put their turned- around tactics to the test Freestle dominates HRVHS skiers dominated t h e f i r s t h i g h s ch o o l freestyle skiing contest of the season, held Friday at Mt.
