HRVHS benefit show
postponed to Jan. 31
“On the Beat,” the benefit variety show scheduled for
this weekend at Hood River Valley High school has been
postponed, and a new location chosen.
Miguel Vasquez, who is organizing the show for his
Extended Application project, announced that the event
will take place Saturday, Jan. 31, at Hood River Middle
School. Current students and alumni are scheduled to
perform; proceeds will benefit HRVHS music and theater
programs.

‘Braceros’ talk Jan. 31
Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum pre-
sents “Braceros of the Pacific Northwest,” an evening
presentation with Dr. Roberto de Anda, Saturday, Jan. 31,
from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The Bracero Program is a moving
bilingual exhibition organized by the Smithsonian's Na-
tional Museum of American History. It examines the ex-
periences of bracero workers and their families, provid-
ing rich insight into Mexican American history and his-
torical background to today's debates on guest worker
programs. Enjoy an optional dinner for $15, served at 6
p.m., followed by the free presentation at 7 p.m. Reserva-

man from the Atlanta
suburbs goes hunting
with a good friend who
teaches him how to
honor simple foods.
Price per person is $25.
■ Jan 28: “My Mom,
her Wake, and the Giant
Sub Sandwich” by Sarah
Sullivan. Since Sarah’s
mom died unexpectedly
last May, Sarah has spent
hours poring over her
cookbooks, remembering
delicious family meals.

are scheduled for Sunday,

Monday, Jan. 19, from 6-8
p.m. at the Columbia Center
for the Arts, 215 Cascade Ave.

The play will be directed
by Judie Hanel.
The play contains roles for
4 women and 2 men. They

MARGIE (40-50s) a tough
cookie with a heart of gold,
down-on-her luck single
mother from South Boston.
MIKE (40-50s) a successful
fertility doctor who escaped
Margie’s South Boston
neighborhood and not too
eager to be reminded of his
past.

‘NEW YEAR, NEW WORK’
This January Columbia Center for the Arts celebrates the new ex-
hibit “New Year, New Work” from Jan. 7-31.
The exhibit features the work of 10 local artists who were accept-
ed into the CCA Gallery of artists last year. Each year Mid-Colum-
bia artists “jury in” to the Gallery by submitting a portfolio of work
that is evaluated by a committee of Gallery artists.
“New Year” artists are Julie Abowitt, Laurel Bushman, Merilee
Cooper, Charlene Fort, Sally Gilchrist, Barbara Murphy, David Ryan,
Sally Reichmuth, Steve Stegall, and Jennifer Szolnoki.
The exhibit opens on Jan. 9 with an artists’ reception from 6 to 8
p.m.; enjoy complimentary appetizers with beer and wine for pur-
