She was sur rounded by her surviv- ing children as well as other mem- bers of the family. Rae was born May 17, 1930, in W h e e l e r , Rae Jackson Texas, to Pre- ston and Etta Jackson. She grew up in Texas attending school there before moving to California, Arizona, Montana and finally settling in Oregon. Rae was once an excellent bowler, and she shared this sport with her husband of 35 years, Fred. She was twice the president of the Parent- Teacher Association in Re- dondo Beach, Calif. She was Cub Scout den mother more than once, and team mom as well. Rae met Harlan Pitts about 25 years ago, and they were partners until he passed away earlier this year. She also served on the Mosier City Council in her late 70s. She made friends quickly — often with those half her age. Her feisty personality and sense of humor were loved by all who knew her, but her greatest gift was being a loving and sup- portive mother and grand- mother. She worked in medical billing for several doctors and medical groups. She loved this work, and she prided her- self on getting every nickel she could for her employers. This often resulted in hugs and occasional raises. Rae loved animals, espe- cially her cats. She also en- joyed knitting, crafts and bingo. She was raised in the Baptist faith, and she re- mained a Christian all of her life. Her love of animals en- couraged her to be a member of the Humane Society. Rae is survived by her three children: Steve Jackson, from Oceanside, Calif., Kay Nunez, from Carson, Calif., and Chris Jackson and his wife, Cary, from Hood River, Ore. Rae has seven grandchil- dren: Damian Jackson, April Abercrombie, Erika McDaris, Travis Jackson, Candice Miles, August Jackson and Madison Jackson. She is also survived by 12 great-grand- children. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred Jackson; son, Richard Jack- son; two daughters-in-law, Debra Harris and Bonnie Jackson; and partner, Harlan Pitts. Services are pending at this time with ar rangements under the direction of Ander- son’s Tribute Center (Funer- als • Receptions • Crema- tions), 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, OR 97031; 541-386- 1000. His family is deeply saddened by this un- expected loss, but are com- forted know- ing that he was doing what he loved in a part of the world that he cherished. Robert was born on Oct. Robert Larson 9, 1932, in Spokane, Wash., to Victor and Kather- ine Larson, and was the eldest of four siblings. He attended Rogers High School in Spokane, and continued his education at Washington State University in Pullman, Wash., where he received his master’s degree in pharma- cology. He married Dawn Springer on Sept. 3, 1957, and they moved to Iowa, where he earned his Ph.D. in pharma- cology at Iowa State Universi- ty. After his residency at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C., he moved to Oregon with his wife and eldest daughter, where he became a professor of pharmacology and toxicol- ogy at Oregon State Universi- ty in Corvallis. Robert had a deep apprecia- tion for the outdoors and chose a home in the country- side of Philomath to raise his family. He was passionate about music and played the clarinet and saxophone very well. He was also interested in other cultures and loved to travel. While at OSU he took two sabbaticals with his family to conduct research at the Karolinska Institutet in Swe- den and the University of Tubingen in Germany. He and Dawn were also active in the Philomath High School Amer- ican Field Service club and hosted students from Japan and Austria. After retirement he and his wife moved to Hood River, Ore., and subsequently spent a year in China teaching pharmacology with the World Health Organization. Al- though his wife’s death in 2002 was difficult, he stayed active and continued travel- ing the world. He took multi- ple trips with i-to-i Interna- tional, traveling to South Africa, Australia, Argentina and Borneo where he volun- teered with organizations res- cuing animals and preserving their habitat. He enjoyed his work with i-to-i immensely and was proud to be one of the oldest volunteers — known to some as the “78 year old Lion Man.” Robert also maintained strong ties with relatives and close friends in Sweden, and traveled there whenever pos- sible. He loved the Columbia Gorge and remained active by hiking, and especially en- joyed taking anyone who vis- ited on tours of the area — sometimes in his convertible Camaro! He was preceded in death by his wife, Dawn Larson, and his sister Ellen Brown. He is survived by his two sisters, Ruth Larson and Irene Wesel; his daughter Laurel Medinger, her hus- band Julian Medinger and their children, Mikaila, Samantha and Evan; his daughter Stina Larson and her husband Donald Kies- ling Jr.; and his son Eric Larson. We invite friends and fami- ly to join in a celebration of his life at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Banks Commu- nity United Methodist Church in Banks, Ore.
