WORK STOPPEfTON MOUNT HOOD ROAD Work has been stopped, tempora rily at least, on the automobile road from the Sandy river across the up per end of the Hull Hun reserve to Hood Hlver Valley. This road Is lelng constructed by the Forestry Service, with the as slstance of Portland automobile en thusiasts. At a recent meeting of the Portland Water Hoard, however, Superintendent Dodge declared that the road would be an avenue where by parties would go Into t lie reserve and set tires or contaminate Port land's water supply. Asa result of this complaint a halt was called to the further construction of the road. and the Forestry Service and Oregon representatives In Congress will be asked to prevent further encroach ment of the public Inside the limits of the water shed of the city's water supply. T. 11. Sherrard, superintendent of the Hull Hun reserve, appeared be fore the board with maps and ex plained what work had already lieen done on the road am) what was con templated. The road, lie said, was designed to connect t he Sandy Itoad with the Hood Hlver Valley. It would be a great attraction to campers and tourists on account of Its scenic features. About six miles Is already constructed. STRANGE FREAKS FROM APPLE SEEDS An apple tree Is the result of a graft from the tree that Is known to be a producer of a certain kind and flavor of apples. If the seed were planted and one relied on It to pro duce a select grade of fruit the result would be disappointing, for the rea son that from the seed the most re markable varieties will be shown. Perhaps they will be miserable little erabapples or misshapen, bitter fruit or a useless conglomeration. The seed somehow or other harks back to Its origin, notwithstanding years of cultivation. The varieties of ap pies known today are n result of careful selection anil constant graft ing of t he bet ter kind from yeat to year until the present development has been attained. Harper's. WANT ALL APPLE TREES AT STAYTON DESTROYED As the old fruit trees around West Sta.vton, being principally In home orchards on grain farms neglected for a score of years, are a menace to the orchards set out by new settlers, efforts are being made to have the Marlon county fruit Inspector take steps to do a way wit h these old fruit trees In order to protect the coming fruit center. The News for good printing. EAGLE CAP CANNOT RIVAL JOUNT HOOD Mount Hood's title as tun highest peak In Oregon Is still clear. Fugle Cap, reputed to lie the highest moun tain In Kastern Oregon, Is no rival of the local peak. Clyde H. Altchlson, chairman of the State Kallroad Commission, and well known In Hood Klver, removed all doubt In the matter when he climbed Eagle Cap the last of the week. ills aneroid barometer showed Its elevation to he about 9700 feet. Mount Hood's peak tow ers up ll,2L'r feet. On the summit of Eagle Cap, In bottles, are records of two previous barometer readings, both being close to what Mr. Altchlson's Instrument showed. Surveyors also say the ele vation is only about 10,000 feet. The climb to the summit Is not difficult, but It is wonderfully Interesting. Eagle Cap Is a bub or axis from which the ridges and canyons that J form the Wallowa range radiate. Money to Loan Amounts $."iO0 to $l."sK). Flrxt class real estate security. NEGLIGENCE GOSTS APPLE JROWER S70 An orchardlst lu the Naches valley, Washington, was recently fined $."i0 and costs, amounting to a total of more than 70, for failure to cut blight out of his apple and pear trees after having been notified to do so by the horticultural Inspector. The Instructions of the Inspector were to cut all Infected branches of apple trees twelve Inches below Infection, and to cut all branches of pear trees thirty-six Inches below the Infection. It was charged that the orchardlst failed to do this. Neighbors who were trying to con trol fire blight In their orchards tes tified against the defendant, claim ing that his Infested trees threatened their orchards. The case has been appealed, but In the meantime all orchardlsts In the Naches valley are being warned to fight blight vigor ously. This shows how this disease is lielng fought In the Pacific North west. In connection with this crusade agalnt blight It has been found that many js-rsons In thinning pears and apples use their thinning shears to cut off blighted twigs. Iustend of checking the disease, this method really helps its spread, for the shears are Infected and carry the bacteria to sound wood. It is recommended that separate shears lie used to re move blighted twigs, and that dlsln fectants be used after every cut. SIEG HAS HANDS FULL ARRANGING FOR MARKETS A dispatch from the meeting of the International Apple Shippers Asso ciation at Chicago says: Wllmer Sieg of Hood Hlver, Ore., and but recently of Milwaukee, was receiving congratulations on his se lection as general manager for the Hood Hlver Apple Growers' I'tiion. The convention was the first oppor tunity that Mr. Sleg had to see the leading apple men of the country all together since accepting his new po sition and lie had his hands full talk ing over their various markets with them and making various arrange ments for handling part of the fine Hood Hlver crop tills season Mr. Selg Is one of the best known apple men In the country. HUCKLEBERRY CROP OF 40,000 GALLONS PICKED It Is estimated that a Heast 40.000 gallons of huckleberries will be taken from the patches In the vicinity of Trout Hake, Wash., this season. The roads are lined with dust-laden ve hicles and persons on horseback, all going for "olalli" or returning from the fields. Many people from as far away as Yakima are there for ber ries. On this side of the river the crop has also been exceptionally heavy and many parties have com blued business and pleasure by camping out In the huckleberry patchet. WENATCHEE'S CROP 5,000 CARS IS NOW ESTIMATED Five thousand carloads of fruit will lea ve the Wenateht" Valley this season. This Is the estimate or liny- ers, growers and the tireat Northern Hallroad. This j ear's tpple crop will be practically double that 'if last year and ."0 per cent larger than any previous season. The Increased acreage Is responsible for the big gains. The (treat Northern Hallroad has planned to handle 1'H) carloads of apples a lay more than twice the number of any previous year. New markets have been opened In Cumuli, Australia mid California this year. RAIN MATERIALLY BENEFITS ORCHARDS Material lieneflt to the local apple orchards resulted from the two-days rain which came the last of the week. Although considerable damage wnt done to crops lu other parts of the state, the apple crop was helped by the abundant moisture. The precip itation here was four-fifths of an Inch. This was sufficient to make up for the slight deficit-ucy of moist ure previously this season. The rain coming In an Intermittent drizzle served to thoroughly soak the ground and to provide water sufficient to meet the stratum of moist subsoil. Tills will tend to Increase the size of the apples. J. C. Johnsen Home of GOOD SHOES Where the Best Values ComeFrom T. 1. TWKKIIY Mutual Insurance at 60 Per Cent of Old Line Kate.
