fruit In much harder for the tree to
produce than an equal quantity of

The time to thin apples U Junt after

will be the bent time to do the apple
thinning. As hood hh you are sure
what apples are going to remain, It
Is best to start thinning. If you be
gin sooner thnn this you may leave
on some apples that nature Intended
to drop, and thus lighten your crops.
On the other hand It Is wise to thin
just as soon as you are sure of what
Is going to stick. The sooner you
thin the more vitality you save to
the tree. It takes more vitality
from the tree to make the seeds than
to make the apple, so If you thin be
fore the seeds are made you do the
tree a great good.
You should thin so as to have only
a slight percentage of apples smaller
than four tier. Suppose you have
twenty boxes of apples that go
about 200 to the box. You will not
receive nearly as much for them as
you would for 12 or 14 boxes that go
IK! to the box, and It Is almost twice
as hard on the tree to grow the 20
boxes of small apples. If we would
all thin well and have only the very
best sizes, aud uiowtly extra fancy, It
would help our marketing more than
anything else.
If we thlu down so that the trees
will bear a good, even crop every
year It will help wonderfully la es
tablishing a (tearing habit that will
make the trees morj valuable In the
future.
If trees are properly thinned It will
sae much damage to the orchards
resulting from trees breaking with an
overload. Thinning wll!uot save all
the tree breaking but It will help a
great deal. From this It can be read
ily seen that thinning Is a very Im
portant orchard operation and
should not le neglected. Thinning
has iKH-n neglected to some extent.
That Is why I am saying so much
about It. And that Is why we
should all do It, and encourage the
other fellow to do It.

misunderstood conn try are almost

members of a local automobile party
which made the trip last week. W. S.

"It was the most enjoyable trip I
have ever taken." declared Mr. Iiart
mess. "To our surprise, the roads
were excellent all the way to
liend and we certainly passed
through some magnificent country,
which Is developing rapidly. There
was much fine timber and from
an agricultural standpoint the
farmers seemed to be thrifty and
prosperous. Where Irrigation Is
used some splendid crops are secured
and the country Is almost Ideal for
stock raising. Copious ruins of late
have been a great boon to the coun
try east of the mountains.
"Bend, which Is only Ave years old,
has about 1"00 people and Is enjoy
ing a steady and rapid growth."

OBITUARY
OHA E. Iir.NTKH
Ora E. Hunter died last week at
the home of his mother, Mrs. Sarah
K. Hunter, half a mile north of Odell.
He had been In poor health for sev
eral years. Mr. Hunter was born
May 15. lv2, at Red Oak, Iowa,
and moved here several years ago.
The funeral was held Thursday and
Interment was at Idlewllde cemetery.

Mrs. Nina Jordan, wife of J. E.
Jordan, died Wednesday at. her
home on Wilson street. She had
been an Invalid for about a year.
She was born at Krownsberg, Ind.,
In KM. Surviving her are a husband
and three children.
The funeral was held at the Baptist
church Wednesday evening.
